Something unusual is happening in
the competition among the ladies in
the all-star leagues—an out-of-towner
has invaded their ranks and is walking
off with a lot of the honors
Hie visitor is Jeanette Robinson of
Flint, who really showed the Detroiters
something over the past weekend
when she moved to the top in two divisions
of the Women's city tournament
and then came right back Monday
night and took top honors in the Bowlerettes
all-star league.
She started her scrambling of the
standings at Strike and Spare Lanes
when she posted a 670 to take the lead
m the singles and this enabled her to
move into the lead in the all-events
with 1847.
Then, not contented, she paced the
Bowlerettes with a 255 for high game
and 657 for high series.
One of the big surprises of the weekend
in the city tourney was the fact
that Sharon Behrendt's Fireside
Team, which blasted a 3147 series to
set a mark in the women's state two
weeks ago. rolled only 2652 to move
into top place, 12 pins ahead of Cora
Feibig's Goebel team.
Meanwhile, Penny Behn teamed
with Leona Obudhowski to take the
doubles lead with an 1189
Township
budget is
approved
Hie Plymouth Township Board of
Tnfitees Tuesday approved general
operating and water and sewer budgets
for 1978-79
Hie general operating revenue of
$1,287,000 is expected to match projected
expenses for the year The water
and sewer revenue and expenses are
estimated at $1,501,000
Hie new budgets were approved by
imnimous votes at the close of a public
budget hearing.
The overall cost of general township
government in the 1978-79 budget is up
some $69,000 over last year's projection
of $1,218,000
The new water and sewer budget
shows an increase of $89,000 over the
$1,411,650 which was budgeted for 1977-
78.
Hie increase in general operating
expenses, according to Clerk Helen
Richardson, is the result of higher
wages for township employees, higher
utility costs and higher prices generally.
According to Web Kincaid, DPW
superintendent, the water and sewer
budget reflects a five-cent-per-thousand
gallons of water rate hike by the
Gty of Detroit, which was levied
against the township in July 1977
ONE OF THOSE unusual happenings
occurred at Westland Bowl
when Dan Emmett and Bill Wilson
tied for top scoring honors in the Little
Caesar Classic.
Emmett strung games of 248, 213
and 205 for 656, while only a few lanes
away Wilson opened with 209, followed
with 236 and closed with 211 for 656
Jerry Cole was right behind them with
a 551 that included a 265 game.
On the women's side, Jane Martin
showed the way with 225 in 593, Gloria
Mertz had a 561, Margy Brothers was
third with 560 and Marge Kropacek
landed fourth with a 219 game in a 555
series.
In the Monday men's league, John
Hurley had a 267 in 688.
Two of the senior citizens also
moved into the spotlight when John
Levich had a 211 in 581 and Vi Veith,
one of the oldest in the league, came
through with a 540.
MIKE RISCH had one of the best
games of his career in the St. Linus
league at Garden Lanes. After sparing
in his opening frame, he struck out for
a 290 in a 657 series. Next to him came
Ken Urbaczyk with a 646.
AN UNUSUAL DEADLOCK popped
up in the ladies classic at Livonia
Lanes.
After Dot Fulton won the opening
game with 212-29—241, Theresa Berus
took the second with 175-28—203 and
Betty Moeller the third with 201-33—
234.
When the handicaps were figured,
both Berus and Moeller tied at 607 to
share series honors.
ONLY THREfc PINS separated the
two leaders in the mixed classic at
Farmington Lanes. Neil Beckman had
a 226 in 634 to set the pace and Gary
Vanderwill had a 223 in 631.
In the ladies classic, Audrey Sirola
moved out in front with a 228 in 604,
but was overtaken by Mary Lou
Schnieder, who soared to a 246 in 619.
In the high school league, Steve
Hamlin took top place with 237 in 588.
SAL TIMKO was the top scorer in
the struggle for honors at Mayflower
I^nes. To reach the top, he had a 233
m 644.
Four members also were admitted
to the Split Conversion Club
Dorothy Gworek qualified by toppling
the 3-6-7. Lucy Heyman followed
by sweeping the 4-7-10, while Diane
Keeter and Muriel Schultz each
knocked down the 6-7-10.
IN THE MAJOR SECTION of the
youth league at Merri-Bowl, Al Colcer
had a 631, but yielded honors to Dave
Tome, who put together games of 175,
2W and 195 for a 634.
In the junior section, Carol Welsh
had a 233 and Pam Weiss a 641 on
games of 230, 199 and 212. Matt Barczuk
also reached double-century figures
with games of 211, 166 and 231 for
608.
