Observerland honors 5 tankers
By DOUG FUNKE and
DENNIS O'CONNOR
Judging from individual performances
during the Class A and B swimming
finals several weeks ago, there
can be little doubt that area poolmen
have the talent to compete with tankers
from all over the state.
Area swimmers not only gave a
good accounting of themselves at the
state meet, but also during the regular
season and at their conference meets
Livonia Franklin tied for the Northwest
Suburban League championship
this winter and Clarenceville shared
the Metro West Conference title.
Livonia Stevenson and Plymouth Canton
placed second in the Inter-Lakes
and Western Six leagues, respectively.
Area coaches gathered recently to
select the all-Observer swim team for
Central for tourney title
East Middle School compiled 491'^ points to win
Middle School Wrestling Tournament held last
East Middle School coach and tournament director
Dan Rig^ was very pleased with the continued
success of the tourney.
"I was really happy with the way things went
with the four schools," Riggs said. "We had better
crowd control this year at the high school, and we
had another good turnout." Some 400 spectators
viewed the action of the tournament. Last year's
tourney was held at East Middle School.
Riggs was also pleased with the outcome of the
toumey, which saw his Rocket grapplers finish on
top.
"I was surprised and happy with my kids,"
Riggs said. "We were 80 points down at one point
but our seventh graders came through.
"But no matter who wins it, it was a community
experience where everyone was involved. Both
high school programs (Salem and Canton) will
benefit because the kids got the experience of
