Observerland honors 5 tankers<br />

Judging from individual performances<br />
during <strong>the</strong> Class A and B swimming<br />
finals several weeks ago, <strong>the</strong>re<br />
can be little doubt that area poolmen<br />
have <strong>the</strong> talent to compete with tankers<br />
from all over <strong>the</strong> state.<br />
Area swimmers not only gave a<br />
good accounting of <strong>the</strong>mselves at <strong>the</strong><br />
state meet, but also during <strong>the</strong> regular<br />
season and at <strong>the</strong>ir conference meets<br />
Livonia Franklin tied for <strong>the</strong> Northwest<br />
Suburban League championship<br />
th<strong>is</strong> winter and Clarenceville shared<br />
<strong>the</strong> Metro West Conference title.<br />
Livonia Stevenson and Plymouth <strong>Canton</strong><br />
placed second in <strong>the</strong> Inter-Lakes<br />
and Western Six leagues, respectively.<br />
Area coaches ga<strong>the</strong>red recently to<br />
select <strong>the</strong> all-Observer swim team for<br />
1978. Most of <strong>the</strong> honorees are underclassmen<br />
and will return next year to<br />
compete again<br />
Swimmers selected for <strong>the</strong> all-area<br />
team were limited to one individual<br />
event.<br />
200-yard freestyle—Mike Balnaves,<br />
Uvonia Franklin. Owner of school<br />

Class A state meet.<br />
The senior was Northwest Suburban<br />
League champ in <strong>the</strong> 100 and 200-yard<br />
freestyles and fin<strong>is</strong>hed first in both <strong>the</strong><br />
50 and 100-yard freestyles at <strong>the</strong> Westem<br />
Wayne Invitational<br />
Balnaves was <strong>the</strong> Patriots' Most<br />
Valuable Swimmer th<strong>is</strong> season.<br />
200-yard individual medley—Mark<br />
Winter, Livonia Beiiley. He was Sub^<br />
urban Eight League champion in <strong>the</strong><br />
200-yard individual medley and 100yard<br />
breaststroke.<br />
Only a sophomore, Winter establ<strong>is</strong>hed<br />
four individual school records<br />
th<strong>is</strong> season—200-yard IM, 200-yard<br />
freestyle 500-yard freestyle and 100yard<br />
breaststroke.<br />
He also swam a leg on both of <strong>the</strong><br />
Bulldogs' record-shattering relay<br />
teams.<br />
"Mark <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> most versatile swimmer<br />
on <strong>the</strong> team," said Bentley coach<br />
Keith Wright. "He'll be returning <strong>the</strong><br />
next two years to swim state qualifying<br />
times in many events."<br />

50-yard freestyle—Brian Ell<strong>is</strong>, Garden<br />
City West. Ell<strong>is</strong>, a junior, qualified<br />
for <strong>the</strong> Class A meet with a best time<br />
in <strong>the</strong> 50 free of 22.8 seconds.<br />
A versatile perfcrmer, Ell<strong>is</strong> th<strong>is</strong> season<br />
won <strong>the</strong> 100-yard freestyle at <strong>the</strong><br />
Tri-River League meet for <strong>the</strong> second<br />
year in a row. Y \<br />
Ell<strong>is</strong> also competed for <strong>the</strong> Tigers<br />
th<strong>is</strong> season in <strong>the</strong> 200-yard freestyle<br />
and in <strong>the</strong> 100-yard butterfly.<br />
The junior <strong>is</strong> also an excellent student<br />
who carries a 3.5 academic average.<br />
"Brian <strong>is</strong> well-liked and respected<br />
by h<strong>is</strong> classmates, teammates and<br />
instructors," said West coach George<br />
Hanosh<br />
Diving—Ken Grand, Clarenceville-<br />
Grund placed first in 10 of <strong>the</strong> Trojans'<br />
12 dual meets th<strong>is</strong> season. A lOth-place<br />
fin<strong>is</strong>her in <strong>the</strong> Class B state meet, <strong>the</strong><br />
senior also reigned as Metro West Copiference<br />
champ.<br />
Grund was <strong>the</strong> second best diver at<br />
both <strong>the</strong> Garden City and Alma<br />
Invitationals.<br />
"Ken <strong>is</strong> an excellent worker and was<br />
dedicated to h<strong>is</strong> goal of placing in <strong>the</strong><br />
state meet," said Clarenceville coach<br />
Gordon Larson. "Ken owes a great<br />

East grapplers defeat<br />
Central for tourney title<br />
East Middle School compiled 491'^ points to win<br />
<strong>the</strong> overall competition in <strong>the</strong> second-annual<br />
Middle School Wrestling Tournament held last<br />
weekend at Plymouth <strong>Canton</strong> High School<br />
East edged Central Middle School by only 19 l 6<br />
points to take <strong>the</strong> overall title.<br />
East and Central both went home with trophies<br />
after <strong>the</strong> Saturday competition East won <strong>the</strong> seventh<br />
grade tourney over Central 289-214, but Central<br />
came back and beat <strong>the</strong> East eighth graders,<br />
268-2024.<br />
West Middle School fin<strong>is</strong>hed third overall with<br />
162 points, placing third in <strong>the</strong> eighth grade event<br />
and fourth with <strong>the</strong> seventh graders.<br />
Pioneer was fourth overall with 1304 points, fin<strong>is</strong>hing<br />
third in <strong>the</strong> seventh grade and fourth in <strong>the</strong><br />
eighth grade.<br />
The four-team double-elimination toumey climaxed<br />
a four-week wrestling segment which most<br />
of <strong>the</strong> middle school physical education classes<br />
teld.<br />
More than 200 wrestlers participated in th<strong>is</strong><br />
event<br />
East Middle School coach and tournament director<br />
Dan Rig^ was very pleased with <strong>the</strong> continued<br />
success of <strong>the</strong> tourney.<br />
"I was really happy with <strong>the</strong> way things went<br />
with <strong>the</strong> four schools," Riggs said. "We had better<br />
crowd control th<strong>is</strong> year at <strong>the</strong> high school, and we<br />
had ano<strong>the</strong>r good turnout." Some 400 spectators<br />
viewed <strong>the</strong> action of <strong>the</strong> tournament. Last year's<br />
tourney was held at East Middle School.<br />
Riggs was also pleased with <strong>the</strong> outcome of <strong>the</strong><br />
toumey, which saw h<strong>is</strong> Rocket grapplers fin<strong>is</strong>h on<br />
top.<br />
"I was surpr<strong>is</strong>ed and happy with my kids,"<br />
Riggs said. "We were 80 points down at one point<br />
but our seventh graders came through.<br />
"But no matter who wins it, it was a community<br />
experience where everyone was involved. Both<br />
high school programs (Salem and <strong>Canton</strong>) will<br />
benefit because <strong>the</strong> kids got <strong>the</strong> experience of<br />
competition "<br />

butterfly and breaststroke at <strong>the</strong><br />
Golden Triangle Championships, {first<br />
in <strong>the</strong> IM and breaststroke at <strong>the</strong><br />
Western Wayne Invitational and first<br />
in <strong>the</strong> IM and breaststroke at <strong>the</strong> Ypsilanti<br />
Invitational.<br />
"Paul <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> most versatile swimmer<br />
in <strong>the</strong> h<strong>is</strong>tory of <strong>Canton</strong> swimming,"<br />
said Bill Faunce, coach of <strong>the</strong><br />
Chiefs. "He's a hard worker and very<br />
dependable."<br />
100-yard freestyle—Tom Rubadue,<br />
Plymouth Salem. Captain of <strong>the</strong><br />
Rocks, Rubadue qualified for <strong>the</strong> Class<br />
A state meet in both <strong>the</strong> 50 and 100^<br />
yard freestyles and as a member of<br />
Salem's freestyle relay team.<br />
Hie senior fin<strong>is</strong>hed second in both<br />
<strong>the</strong> 50 and 100 frees at <strong>the</strong> Golden<br />
jle Championships, third in <strong>the</strong><br />

Rubadue <strong>is</strong> a membef of <strong>the</strong><br />
National Honor Society.<br />
"Tom was very dependable all sea<br />
son swimming any freestyle event,"<br />
said Salem coach Chuck Olson "He<br />
showed good leadership all year."<br />
500-yard freestyle—Tom Smith,<br />
Uvonia Stevenson. Th<strong>is</strong> season's Most<br />
Valuble Swimmer for <strong>the</strong> Spartans,<br />
Smith swam to a third-placc fin<strong>is</strong>h in<br />
<strong>the</strong> 500-yard freestyle and recorded a<br />
fourth-place timing in 200-) ard freestyle<br />
at <strong>the</strong> Class A state me *t.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> most versatile ; wimmers<br />
in <strong>the</strong> area, Smith competed in all<br />
freestyle events, <strong>the</strong> breaststroke,<br />
backstroke, butterfly and ndividual<br />
medley.<br />
The junior will captain <strong>the</strong> Spartans<br />
next season.<br />
"Tom <strong>is</strong> a dedicated swimmer and a<br />
team man," said Stevenson coach Lo<strong>is</strong><br />
McDonald. "He competes year around<br />
and swims all strokes."<br />
100-yard backstroke—Kevin Gau-<br />
i<br />
thier, Livonia Bentley. The junior<br />
placed <strong>the</strong> highest of any individual<br />
area swimmer in <strong>the</strong> Class A finals by<br />
fin<strong>is</strong>hing second in <strong>the</strong> backstroke with<br />
an effort of 54.7 seconds<br />
Gauthier, who holds school records<br />
in <strong>the</strong> 50 and 100-yard freestyles and<br />
<strong>the</strong> 100-yard backstroke, won suburban<br />
Eight League championships in <strong>the</strong> 50<br />
free and <strong>the</strong> backstroke th<strong>is</strong> season<br />
"Kevin <strong>is</strong> a complete swimmer able<br />
to take first in most any event in dualmeet<br />
competition," said Bentley coach<br />
Keith Wright. "He was less than one<br />
second away from ail-American time<br />
in <strong>the</strong> backstroke."<br />
100-yard breaststroke—Gary Sellars,<br />
Livonia Franklin. Northwest Suburban<br />
League champ in <strong>the</strong> breaststroke and<br />
<strong>the</strong> 200-yard individual medley, Sellars<br />
also fin<strong>is</strong>hed second in both events at<br />
<strong>the</strong> Western Wayne Invitational<br />
The senior was a state qualifier in<br />
<strong>the</strong> breaststroke.<br />
