Disenfranchised grievers are frequently overlooked or ignored, lack oppOitunities to express <strong>the</strong>ir emotions, receive diminished social support and sympathy from o<strong>the</strong>rs, and may be deprived <strong>of</strong> opportunities to participate in mourning rituals. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong>se individuals are denied <strong>the</strong> "right to grieve". Disenfranchisement is a significant problem for grievers because it can inhibit coping and complicate <strong>the</strong> grief process. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this paper is to review <strong>the</strong> existing literature on disenfranchised grief while specifically focusing on <strong>the</strong> grief experiences <strong>of</strong> three commonly disenfranchised groups: bereaved grandparents, relinquishing birthmo<strong>the</strong>rs, and bereaved ex-spouses. A second main focus <strong>of</strong> this paper is to increase knowledge and awareness <strong>of</strong> disenfranchised grief as <strong>the</strong>re is a 2
paucity <strong>of</strong> research on <strong>the</strong> subject. Limitations <strong>of</strong> current research, implications for future research, and implications for practice are also included in this review. 3
