The Southern General largely will look<br />
after the emergency care, trauma <strong>and</strong> other needs of the north<br />
west, west <strong>and</strong> south <strong>and</strong> south west of the city <strong>and</strong> parts of the<br />
south east <strong>and</strong> the Royal Infirmary will look after most of<br />
central north, north east, east <strong>and</strong> just a bit of south east.<br />
Now that’s the pattern of provision in half<br />
a dozen years from now <strong>and</strong> to have looked at disrupting all of<br />
this, all of these established relationships for the sake of what is<br />
annually several thous<strong>and</strong>s of, several thous<strong>and</strong>s, not tens of<br />
thous<strong>and</strong>s, hundreds of thous<strong>and</strong>s of episodes of care just did<br />
not seem to represent a change that was worth making when in<br />
not many years in the west end of the city there wasn’t gonna<br />
be an acute hospital with an A&E Department.<br />
So I recognise the disappointment, I have<br />
heard about it often enough but I think the down sides of trying<br />
to make that set of changes would have been enormous in<br />
terms of the consequences <strong>and</strong> we couldn’t have delivered on<br />
the inpatient changes in the west of the city probably much<br />
before two years from now.<br />

work <strong>and</strong> Nick will speak more about that but what he had<br />
described previously was the enthusiasm of existing GP’s, our<br />
need to enhance the capacity of primary care support <strong>and</strong> the<br />
