SIMMENTAL BULLS . . . LOTS 125 – 144 45 Gibbs Farms 7th Annual Bull & Replacement Heifer Sale Simmental Bulls We have 16 Purebred Simmental and 4 ¾ blood Simmental bulls in the sale offering this year and plan to continue growing the number of Simmental bulls each year to approximately 30 – 35 bulls in the future or more if our customer demand shows the need. It was a slow process increasing our Simmental numbers because the Gibbs breeding program was primarily a SimAngus program prior to purchasing the entire Optimal Beef Genetics herd in 2005 and the genetic nucleus of the OBG Simmental herd was purchased to use in building new SimAngus cow families in the Gibbs program. After fi ve years of mating the OBG Simmental cows to Angus bulls, the decision was made to take their matings back to Simmental and build a young herd of Purebred Simmental from those original cows before they all retired on us. We are gradually working on that process, keeping larger numbers of Simmental heifers each year as replacements and will have pretty much replaced the old OBG nucleus cows with a new generation of Gibbs bred Simmental cows in two more years. Most of the old OBG Simmental cows are actually still here at the farm and in active production, but have been nick-named “the wheel chair gang” because of their age. It says a lot for their productive longevity when you see those old 10 – 15 year-old Simmental cows with new babies at side each year, still doing a great job raising a calf and breeding back on time as they graze Alabama and Georgia KY-31 Fescue and common Bermuda pastures just like any other commercial cow herd in the area. As we build our younger generation Simmental herd, we are attempting to introduce at least one new sire each year and use him in signifi cant numbers so as to bring some new bloodlines into the program. Last year, we used Upgrade heavily and this year we chose a white-face bull named Long’s Shear Pleasure. Shear Pleasure was on display in the yards at the National Western Stock Show three years ago and was quite impressive as an individual and genetically on paper. He offered very new genetics to our Simmental program, great carcass potential, reduced frame size with massive muscle and rib capacity, and the distinct white-face that so many of our commercial producers are requesting. We contracted a one year natural possession lease and actually had Shear Pleasure at the farm breeding naturally for that one breeding season, plus used him A.I. on some mating’s as well as one embryo fl ush to an outstanding young Sure Bet cow that was also white-face. Shear Pleasure may produce white on the rear feet and underline too frequently to please most Purebred Simmental breeders, but we feel our commercial producers are going to love them. Even with some extra ”chrome” as many refer to, mated to solid black SimAngus or Angus cows, the extra white is needed if you want any consistency in getting the desired blaze-face on the calves. We feel Shear Pleasure made a signifi cantly positive contribution to our program, but the fi nal judge will be our customers. Shear Pleasure sons . . . brings new blood to our Simmental breeding program. He is actually a ¾ blood Simmental sired by Hooks Shear Force and on the dam’s side of his pedigree he goes back two generations to ½ blood SimAngus cows carrying the Angus genetics of Vermilion Dateline and RP 3RD Bushwacker, then back to a Simmental cow sired by Bold Future. Mating him to Purebred Simmental cows results in a Purebred Simmental calf that defi nitely has an intriguing twist for a herd that is predominantly SimAngus anyway. The current EPDs on Shear Pleasure places him well below breed average for BW with a top 30% ranking, WW ranking in the top 2%, YW ranking in the top 3%, MM in the top 5%, Marb in the top 3%, REA in the top 2%, API in the top 10% , and TI in the top 1% of the Simmental breed. He consistently reduced frame size without taking away performance due to the massive muscle and huge rib capacity of his progeny. His combination of high marbling and ribeye genetics is a great contribution to a Purebred Simmental breeding program. LONG’S SHEAR PLEASURE GIBBS 7241T SM BET L138 Our lead-off Simmental bulls, Lots 125 – 128, are embryo fl ush full brothers sired by Shear Pleasure out of a young Simmental cow sired by Sure Bet that earned her distinction as a donor the right way, through tremendous production. For us, she is young for a donor cow, but she had raised 3 calves with an average weaning ratio of 113, but most importantly, they were all really good. Through her individual data and her progeny data, she has attained EPDs ranking in the top 2% of the Simmental breed for YW EPD, top 35% for Marb EPD, and top 1% for REA EPD. We felt combining the high performance, high carcass value, and the white face of these two individuals would yield an interesting product.
