GIBBS IBBS F ARMS Gibbs Farms heifer calves are normally weaned the fi rst week in April, three to four weeks prior to our bull calves. As soon as they are weaned, they are turned out in large pastures in groups of 25 – 40 heifers for the summer. All of our pastures are a mixture of KY-31 fescue and common Bermuda. We feel it is essential the heifers graze KY-31 fescue while developing so they become acclimated to the effects of the endophyte. The heifers are provided free choice mineral containing Rumensin and BC Calving and Rebreeding tubs. We also try to hand feed a very limited amount of supplemental feed to them four to fi ve times a week, a ration we make at the farm containing soyhull pellets, dry distillers, and cottonseed hulls. We never feed any type of high starch cereal grain products to any of our cattle. We initially vaccinate prior to weaning using a 7-way clostridium and modifi ed-live Bovi-Shield Gold as well as collect tissue samples from all calves to test for BVD-PI. After weaning, they get a booster of each and are vaccinated for Brucellosis. At sale time, our heifers will not be carrying extra, unneeded condition and we experience great breeding conception each year. Complete birth, weaning, and yearling performance data and ultrasound scan results were processed and their results incorporated into the genetic evaluation prior to us downloading the EPDs for the sale catalog, so the EPDs printed in the sale catalog for each animal is their most current and complete genetic prediction. Open Fall Yearling SimAngus Replacement Heifers Replacement Heifer Development Sure Bet daughters . . . will lead off our replacement heifer offering this year. Our oldest Sure Bet daughters in production are calving this fall as fi ve-year-old cows and we will calve 31 of his daughters ranging from two to fi ve years old this fall. We are retaining another group of 20 yearlings to breed for next year because Sure Bet daughters are doing a great job for us as mamas and his carcass genetics are as good as any sire we have used. They are not big, over-powering as cows, but they are very slick haired cows that stay in good condition, have proven to milk well, raise big calves, and breed back effi ciently. That’s what a cow is supposed to do, so they sure have a home at Gibbs Farms. We have selected some very special heifers for the sale this year, mainly due to the fact we have greatly reduced the number of replacements we need. For several years, we were replacing a lot of older cows and gradually growing our cow herd numbers a little. We are now at our carrying capacity with our cow herd, most of the old cows have been replaced and the number of retained replacement heifers this year is about 20% - 25% less than it has been for the past fi ve years, allowing us to feature more of our best heifers in the sale. The Lot 150 heifer is about as fancy as they get, so fancy she could easily be shown successfully, but most importantly, she will make a fantastic cow. 55 Gibbs Farms 7th Annual Bull & Replacement Heifer Sale Open Fall Yearling SimAngus Replacement Heifers JAUER DOCTOR 7020 35 Lot 151 The next three heifers, Lots 151 – 153, are embryo full sisters sired by Sure Bet and out of our Jauer 7020 donor cow. This cow has proven to be our best producer of highly productive Angus replacement females. Since we name females by cow family name, it is easy to look through our sale catalog and see how many females appear with the Jauer 7020 in their name. We would not even know how to start trying to calculate what this cow has done for us and she is nowhere close to done. We have 29 embryos out of 3 different mating’s still sitting in the tank ready to be implanted and at almost 16 years old, she is due to calve again with a natural calf this fall. She defi nitely is looking like an old cow, but it’s amazing how sound she still is on her feet and legs. She is truly one of the great Angus cows of the breed and we are offering three of her direct daughters sired by Sure Bet, not the pick of them, actually selling all three. If there truly is a serious breeder in the seats on sale day, these three heifers will all go to the same home. Great cow families make a difference and a chance to buy into a proven great cow family with young genetics like this does not come along very often.
