Present: Chief Justice Rehnquist, Justice Stevens, Justice O’Connor,<br />

Justice Scalia, Justice Kennedy, Justice Souter, Justice Thomas, Justice<br />

Ginsburg, and Justice Breyer.<br />

The Chief Justice said:<br />

“I have the honor to announce, on behalf of the <strong>Court</strong> that the October<br />

2001 Term of the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> of the United States is now<br />

closed, and the October <strong>2002</strong> Term is now convened.<br />

“Today’s orders of the <strong>Court</strong> have been duly entered and certified<br />

and filed with the Clerk and they will not be otherwise announced.<br />

“The <strong>Court</strong> today notes the retirement of Chief Deputy Clerk Francis<br />

Lorson. Mr. Lorson served in various capacities in the Clerk’s Office<br />

for more than thirty years. The <strong>Court</strong> thanks him for his long and<br />

dedicated service. We wish him well in his retirement. The <strong>Court</strong> has<br />

appointed Christopher Vasil as Chief Deputy Clerk and Cynthia Rapp<br />

as Deputy Clerk.”<br />
