Dear Inoculum ... Charging Fees for Taxonomic Services I have xeroxed a number of copies of [the article 'Charging Fees for Taxonomic Services'] and distributed it to hard-pressed taxonomists here in New Zealand. One would think that a country such as New'Zealand which relies upon the ex- port of primary produce as a major revenue earners, that systematics/taxonomists might be more valued here 'down-under'. However, the situation is as bad here as it is in the States. Our University is the only remaining tertiary institution that teaches mycology. As other professional mycologists have retired, their positions have been terminated. Insofar as money for research is concerned, taxonomists have the usual difficulty of justifying their existence until some 'crisis'occurs. Such a crisis has just occurred here in New Zealand. The shellfish industry which grosses some 25 million dollars annually, has been struck down by the blooming of one or more dinoflagellates which are making the shellfish toxic for human consumption. Of course, if there had not been the down-grading of systematic algologists over the years, a good database of information concerning the annual cycles of thes'e organisms would have been known. But I do not anticipate that this event will change attitudes dramatically. Memories are short, and all too soon monies will return to such 'glamour areas' as molecular genetics and biochemistry. Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that the tradition of identifying specimens for free is over. There simply is not the time to spend hours (days or even a week' or so) in identifying specimens for interested members of the public or other insti- tutions, when much of our time must be spent scratching around to find the funds to simple continue. However, continue we will, although we might become rather bitter and twisted! Ann Bell Victoria University of Wellington RE: Taxonomists: charging into oblivion Dammit be careful out there!!! Some years ago, the Botany Division of New Zealand's Division of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) came to a similar conclusion, that the day of free taxonomic IDS was at an end. Hence they began charging. From that day these guys were dead. Identifications made for clients dropped from several per day to a few per month. Didn't matter what the fee was, the clients didn't come back. Didn't take the administrators more than a few clicks on their calculators to discover that the users were not paying for the service and were not going to. Within two years, Botany Division was dead, with most of its staff in taxonomy gone or going (I think the herbarium curator is all that remains).. The New Zealand Government refuses to fund taxonomy - there is the occasional murmuring from a scientific review, which Government tosses a few platitudes over in the way of last rites and then ignores. And no New Zealand University teaches taxonomy. Just as well given the caliber of the students who fool them- selves'into thinking they're learning it. Get real. Underpayment is better than no payment. And it may mean that there are a few individuals left to pass on their expertise when, in thirty years, folk fi- nally recognize what they've done by killing off the field that answers the first question of biology ("What is it?").
