NORTH AMERICAN MYCOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION Affiliated Societies, Associations, and Clubs The number and distribution of major amateur mycological groups within North America may come as a surprise to many professional mycologists. In addition to these more formally organized groups, there is an even greater number of less well organized groups of amateur mycologists and mycophagists scattered across North America that are not affiliated with NAMA. These groups welcome and heartily appreciate participation by professional mycologists in any and all of their activities. At least two widely distributed journals, Mcllvainea and Mushroom: The Journal of Wild Mushrooming are significant sources of information for and about the efforts of amateur mycology in North America. Many of the amateur groups listed here distribute their own newsletters that often contain serious and humorous items that may be of general interest to the MSA membership. You are encouraged to send these items on to Inoculum. Please include name of the source newsletter and the name and address of its editor in order to get permission to reprint material in Inoculum. Walter Litten wrote to note that in 1986, in Mcllvainea, the journal of amateur mycology published by the North American Mycological Association, he started writing an annual feature entitled "Recent Referee-Reveiwed Research reports" (5R for short). It summarizes papers he selected from Mycologia and Mycotaxon for amateurs. He would welcome reprints of mycological papers from other journals to consider for treatment in 5R. He warns, however, that his treatment uses techniques to entrap the interest of readers in material they didn't know to be of interest. That makes it different from abstracts in research journals read from professional necessity to stay abreast. He began writing 5R upon being appointed to MSA's Ad Hoc Committee on Liaison with Amateur Mycological Societies and Clubs. As to why such liaison was desirable, he says he was not told, but figured it was probably to help bridge the gulf that expensive technology widens be- tween amateurs and professionals. There are a few, though, and he sees it as his task to avoid putting them off with the kind of language that authors of the scientific journal articles must use on pain of rejection by editors. His technique comes out of journalism and adver- tising, occupations which afforded him a living before mycology. He adds that he hopes his efforts do not offend career scientists.
