ut it still holds our interest. Once again, as is typical of Aeschylus, the dramatic devices are exciting and the poetry is powerful. This play teaches us not only that learning comes from suffering, but that civilized alternatives to violence exist. Getting man to put these alternatives into practice in an ongoing problem for the human race. Athena’s vote for civilization rings true and clear, but man is always ready to introduce his own cacophony. 30
Performance Tradition This is a very selective list to give some idea of the way Greek tragedy has influenced drama over the centuries. The separate translations, adaptations, and performances will be listed chronologically up to the twentieth century. Then the individual plays will be grouped and listed chronologically in that sub-category. When Aeschylus died a state decree was issued allowing his plays to be revived at the tragic festivals in competition with living playwrights. Aristophanes' Frogs shows us that Aeschylus was still held in high repute after his death, since he is shown victorious over Euripides. Throughout the centuries, Euripides gradually became more popular. In Rome during the first century AD, Seneca's plays based on Aeschylus (Thyestes and Agamemnon) were bloodier versions than the originals. Senecan drama heavily influenced Renaissance tragedy including Shakespeare, and has proved influential since then, up to, and including the visions of Antonin Artaud. It is not clear that his plays were actually performed in antiquity. Their lengthy descriptions and philosophical ramblings do not show the tautness of drama that we find in the ancient Greek tragedians. The violence shown on stage also was contrary to the ancient dramatic conventions, and might have been difficult to enact. T.S. Eliot claimed that they were written “for declamation before an imperial highbrow audience of crude sensibility but considerable sophistication in the ingenuities of language.” Thyestes was probably written during the time of Nero (37-68). Seneca, born in Spain in 4 BC, was Nero’s tutor, but lost favor when less demanding advisors were available. Thyestes begins with Tantalus, the Ur-criminal-ancestor of the house of Atreus, urged on by a Fury to inspire his descendants to surpass his own crimes. This play is an expansion of the story about the adultery of Atreus’ wife with his brother Thyestes, and how Atreus took a brutal vengeance on his brother (all this is alluded to by Cassandra, the chorus, Clytemnestra, and Aegisthus in Aeschylus’ Agamemnon). This may have seemed relevant in contemporary Rome: Nero very possibly murdered his own stepbrother Britannicus, and even his own mother. 31
