Wilmington
Peterson finishes all scholastic season, career
Bv MIKE IPPOLITO
Sports Correspondent
It's been said on many occa-
sions that great players have a
way of stepping up their game
when the pressure is at its
greatest and when the stakes
are at their highest. Curt
Schilling of the Red Sox is a
great example of this, as he has
been a great pitcher for most of
his career, but has been at his
dazzling best in the post sea-
son, leading two teams to World
Series championships.
While nobody is ready to put
Wilmington resident and St.
John's Prep star pitcher Steve
Peterson in Schilling's class
just yet, the senior lefthander
recently showed that he also
has a knack for stepping up his
game when it matters most as
well, leading the Eagles to the
state championship game
before they fell to Algonquin.
During the post season run,
Peterson allowed two earned
runs in 23 innings pitched,
while striking out 26 and walk-
ing just two. The Boston
Herald All Scholastic earned a
pair of victories in the Eagles
run, including a nine inning no
hitter against Newton North in
the Section semi-finals and a 6-
3 win over Lincoln Sudbury in
the first round, a game in
which he retired the first 22
batters he faced.
To wrap up his remarkable
season, Peterson pitched three
scoreless innings of relief in the
Eagles win over BC High in the
state semi-finals, and two more
scoreless relief innings against
Algonquin in the title game.
"It wasn't so much I felt like I
had to step up my game, but I
knew how important the play-
offs were to our team."
Peterson said. "Everyone
wanted the state title.
Everyone had such high expec-
tations for us this year and we
had such high expectations for
ourselves."
If one wanted to nitpick had
Peterson's reputation as a
great big game pitcher, about
the only argument that could
be made is that he is so consis-
tently outstanding that it would
be difficult to say that he actu-
ally improves in the playoffs.
The regular season stats for
the Marist bound Peterson
were, after all, incredible as
well. He posted an 8-0 record
with a 1.00 ERA, with 87 strike-
outs in 70 1/3 innings pitched.
Opponents batted just .149
against him for the season.
But the playoffs were in fact
even better, as opponents bat-
ted just .065 against him in the
post season. There may not
have been two better efforts all
season than the wins over
Lincoln-Sudbury and Newton
North, but Peterson treated the
games as if they were just
another step toward the team's
ultimate goal of a state title.
"I just wanted to go out there
and throw strikes and hit my
spots and that's what I was able
to do in both games," Peterson
said. "I had great command of
my fastball, curveball and my
changeup, and I did not get
down in many counts which
helped a lot."
As business like an approach
as Peterson takes when he
steps on the mound, he is still
able to enjoy the thrill of his
outstanding performances, as
he did in the no hitter against
Newton North.
"It was just unbelievable to be
able to throw a no hitter in that
kind of environment in the sec-
lional semi finals." Peterson
said. "To go out there and beat
such a go
