SP2C TOWN CRIER - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 2006
T -"
Dear Jamie:
I couldn't believe what I was
reading when I saw the letter to
the Sports Editor in last week's
Town Crier. Not only was the
letter from the anonymous
writer full of distortions but the
Town Crier decided to highlight
the letter in gray on the front
page of the sports section and
use the headline "Poor Parental
Sportsmanship Displayed on
Soccer Field".
I was at the game. There was
NO poor sportsmanship dis-
played by any parent, player or
coach. On the contrary, anyone
who truly saw the game wit-
nessed a well played game by
two good Wilmington teams.
They would have seen parents,
friends, and siblings cheering
on both teams. At the end of
the game they would have seen
players and parents from both
teams walking off together as
friends, classmates, and neigh-
bors congratulating each other.
The writer appears to have a
problem with the designation of
"A" or "B" teams, which is a
problem throughout youth
sports. However, at that tour-
nament, no one was cheering
on "A" or "B". They were call-
ing out "Go white", "Go Blue"
or "Go Wildcats".
As for the inaccuracies of last
week's letter, it makes mention
of the "B" team being "moved
up a division due to lack of
teams playing in Division II".
Actually, due to the lack of
teams in all 8v8 divisions, there
was only one united Ul2-8v8
division played in the tourna-
ment. Two teams from the
spring season's Division I and
two teams from Division II
qualified. Wilmington was for-
tunate enough to have two of
EDITORS
NOTE.
Letters to the edi-
tor represent the
opinions of those
who write and sub-
mit them and
Should not be mis-
taken as positions
taken by the Town
Crier.
Furthermore, the
Sports editor
reserves the right
to edit ail submit-
ted letters as he
$ees fit for publica-
6on.
those four teams competing.
Last week's letter said " 'A'
team parents took great sport
jokingly asking 'are you even
going to show up?" More than
likely the writer overheard a
friendly conversation between
two parents in jest and took it
the wrong way. There was no
outright bragging or taunting
by any parent.
Last week's letter refers to the
"A teams' 1 making a "grand
entrance" aboard the privately
owned fire truck This was a
nice gesture by one of the par-
ents to let the girls have some
fun and excitement. It was not
meant as a tool for taunting,
bragging or demeaning the
opposition. If that's the way
the writer saw it, the writer
took the wrong impression!
As for the non-Wilmington
player awaiting treatment for
an injured shoulder (not heat
exhaustion), a Billerica police
officer arrived at the
Shawsheen Tech Field at the
same time as the Wilmington
team and had no problem park-
ing right up front and going to
the injured player's aid. An
ambulance arrived three or
four minutes later and was able
to do the same.
Last week's letter said when
the team returned to the
Shawsheen Elementary they
created "a traffic mess while
an injured player awaited a
'real'fire truck...". I was in the
group of parents by the shack
witnessing the team's arrival
and there was NO traffic mess!
As a matter of fact, by the time
the team arrived at Shawsheen
Elementary all games for the
morning had ended. There was
a lull before the next scheduled
games, possibly for a lunch
nothing
break. We had no problem
parking in the lot at that time.
The - players exited the fire
truck in 60-90 seconds and the
parent driving the truck left the
lot.
It was almost five minutes
later that the EMT's arrived to
treat the injured player and
they had no problem pulling
right up to the shack. I repeat,
there was NO traffic mess
caused by the team's arrival.
Why the writer made this claim
is beyond me.
In the letter the accusation
was made that "they were just
some thoughtless parents cele-
brating a victory that had not
occurred". In fact, the
Wilmington white team had
already won the weekend tour-
nament based on the previous
day's results. Yes, there was
celebration. The celebration
was for a team of young girls
who were enjoying a good
weekend. It was not meant as
a "taunt" or a "brag" and no
one called any other player
"inferior". Most parents on
both teams, except obviously
the letter's author, knew this to
be the case.
The sad part of last week's
letter comes when the author
refers to "the 'A' team" being
"awarded their fourth penalty
kick and finally eeking out a 1-
1 tie." The insinuation being
that the so-called "A team" was
given these PKs simply
because of their designation
"A". When a defensive player
commits a hand ball in the box,
the offensive team is awarded a
PK. When a defensive player
enters the box prior to the PK,
another one is awarded. Those
are the rules of the game. The
referee didn't decide to award
PKs based on which team was
"A" or "B".
Last week's author said he or
she "was ashamed to be a
Wilmington parent in youth
soccer" that day. That the par-
ent would actually feel that way
and to feel the need to write a
distorted view of the event is
the real shame. What should
have been written is the story
of two good Wilmington youth
soccer teams who gave it their
all and due to excellent play
and goaltending, the game
resulted in a 1-1 tie. What also
should have been written is the
expression of appreciation to
Wilmington Youth Soccer and
the many volunteers who made
it such a enjoyable weekend to
all those who took part, except
maybe to that writer.
The headline referred to
"Poor Parental
Sportsmanship". I notice the
writer failed to mention that
during the awards ceremony
the parents and players of both
the Wilmington white team and
the runner-up Lowell team
were cheering and applauding
each other, displaying great
sportsmanship. Perhaps the
writer was too busy looking for
that fictional "traffic mess" in
the parking lot at the time.
letter that appeared in the
not anonymous, rather it was a
by request.
Letter to the Sports Editor
No harm done with Fire Truck
Dear Jamie:
This letter is in response to a
letter to the sports editor in the
June 21st edition of the Town
Crier titled "Poor parental
sportsmanship displayed on
soccer field".
As the owners of the personal
fire truck which escorted the
Wilmington A soccer team to
their last game of the season,
we would like everyone to know
that it was our idea and neither
the coaches, parents or players
knew anything about it until
they met at 10am that morning.
We did ask the head coach's
permission the evening before
This was something we had
been trying to do all season,
but due to the weather or other
scheduling problems it never
happened. We did this as a
treat for our daughter and her
teammates and would have
done it no matter what team
our daughter was on and
whether or not the team was in
first or last place! It had noth-
ing to do with winning or los-
ing!
Neither of us ever spoke to
any parent or child from the
other team prior to the game
except for on two occasions. I
spoke with one parent to ask
assistance with daycare for my
child and I worked for the two
hours prior to Sunday's game
with the coach of the other
team. The parent and I never
mentioned soccer and I never
made any negative comments
regarding the game. As a mat-
ter of fact, the coach and I had
a great time selling souvenirs
at bargain prices!
As for the injured player at
the Shawsheen Tech when we
arrived, my husband, being an
EMT and another parent from
the "A" Team who is a para-
medic, went over to the tent
where the injured child was
and offered their assistance
until the Billerica Ambulance
arrived. The traffic jam at the
Shawsheen, if there was one,
lasted less than five minutes.
The girls were off the truck and
the truck was immediately
removed from the parking lot
and at no time did it interfere
with the Wilmington Fire
Department's arrival to assist
another injured child.
I take personal offense to the
comment about taunting spe-
cial education children. If the
writer of (last week's) letter
knows anything about me they
know that I have been a special
education teacher for 24 years
and we are the proud parents of
a child with special needs! It
disgusts me that you would
stoop so low!
In closing, our daughter loves
to play soccer and has never
cared what team she played on.
Sunday's game was just that, a
game to her. The fire truck ride
just made it a little more spe-
cial to her which was our over-
all intention!
Sincerely,
Bob and Cathy Woods
