Communications from the Hubrecht Laboratory
I The team work project
In connection with the development of the building project (see below) the
next international team work will almost certainly not be held before 1964.
In the meantime, however, there will still be available a limited number of
places for individual foreign guest workers in the old building.
II The building project
Various factors have retarded this project. It is now hoped that the building
activities can be started early in 1962. The new building could then be ready
by the end of 1963.
III The scientific staff
In the beginning of 1961 the biochemist Dr. D. O. E. Gebhardt joined the
staff. He is carrying out preparatory work for the future histo- and cytochemical
unit.
In the course of 1962 Dr. Kirstie Lawson (Cambridge) hopes to join the
staff, and to start the organisation of the tissue- and organ-culture research
unit.
It is hoped that in the course of 1962 a biophysicist can be appointed, who
will be asked to make a start with the biophysical approach to developmental
problems, in connection with the establishment of a biophysical research unit.
The three units mentioned will then already be well prepared before moving
into the new building.
Dr. J. Faber is hoping to go abroad for specialization in the field of developmental
genetics in 1962/63.
IV Guest workers
Mr. Koki Hara (Nagoya), who has stayed at the Laboratory since 1958,
obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Utrecht in November 1961, on a
thesis entitled "Regional neural differentiation induced by prechordal and presumptive
chordal mesoderm in the chick embryo".
Two members of the fourth international team stayed on afterwards at the
Laboratory and concluded their studies in 1961: Dr. M. I. Michael (Alexandria)
carried out an experimental analysis of the development of the sensory
placodes, the cephalic ganglia and other derivatives of the head neural crest
in urodeles, while Mr. M. Corner (New York) studied the properties of
isolated neural plate regions during the neurula stages in amphibians by means
of the explant technique.
Miss F. E. Ince (London) stayed at the Laboratory for three months to
study experimental techniques.
Two new guest workers arrived in 1961: Dr. M. S. Falakali (Izmir, Turkey)
will carry out a quantitative analysis of the distribution of the neural crest
along the margin of the neural plate in amphibians, while Mr. J. D. Babb
(Gambier, Ohio) is planning an investigation concerning the propagation of
inductive influences through competent ectoderm in urodeles.
