peripheral nerve terminations, (3) the spinal cord, (4) the cerebellum, (5) the
cerebral cortex, and (6) the retina.
All the original figures of Cajal are included in the book. They are very
well reproduced.
The translator has attempted to render the original text into current scientific
English. He has added an author and a subject index, and has also carefully
checked every single one of the more than 230 bibliographical references.
The book is well printed and well bound.
"CONTRIBUTION A L'eTUDE DU METABOLISME CELLULAIRE
AU MOYEN DE LA METHODE AUTORADIOGRAPHIQUE"
1961
by A. Ficq Inst. Interuniv. des
(Monographic no. 9) Sciences Nucleaires
121 pp., 37 figs., 26 tbs., 7 graphs Bruxelles
(paper-bound)
In this monograph the author, one of the collaborators of Prof. J. Brachet in
Brussels, reviews mainly her own research in the field of autoradiography as
related to protein metabolism, research carried out over a period of about ten
years. Although concerned with cellular metabolism in general, these results
are of interest to embryologists as well, since many of them concern developing
systems, such as oocytes and embryonic cells.
The monograph is illustrated with graphs and a number of well-reproduced
photomicrographs. It contains a specialized bibliography of 8 pages, which is
entirely up-to-date.
"CONGENITAL DEFORMITIES"
1961
by G. C. Gordon E. & S. Livingstone Ltd.
128 pp., 113 figs. Edinburgh and London
Price: 37 s. 6 d.
Although the title of this monograph might suggest a text book, this is not
the case. The book addresses itself almost exclusively to clinicians. Its core is
formed by a discussion of the aetiology of congenital deformities of the hip,
but other related deformities are also treated, against a general theoretical
background. The illustrations consist mainly of photographs, mostly X-ray
pictures.
"GRUNDZOGE DER HISTOGENESE HoHERER PFLANZEN;
I. DIE ANGIOSPERMEN"
1960
by H. v. Guttenberg Gebr. Borntraeger
(Handbuch der Pflanzenanatomie, Berlin
Bd. VIII, Teil 3) Price: DM 110.—
323 pp., 328 figs.
This book is a part of the second, revised edition of the "Encyclopedia of
plant anatomy", edited by V. Zimmerman and P. G. Ozenda. The book does
not deal with embryology in the strict sense, but restricts itself to a description
of the phenomena of primary histogenesis, mainly in the embryo (root, shoot
and leaves), but also in the later plant axis and leaf of Angiosperms.
The description of histogenesis automatically leads to the description of
