Most of the papers are well illustrated. Only one (no. 7) is not illustrated.
The volume is concluded by author and subject indexes.
With very few exceptions the most recent literature cited in the various bibliographies
dates from 1959. This leads to the conclusion that probably at least a year has elapsed between
submission of the manuscripts and publication. If possible, a reduction of this interval in future
volumes would be very important. Perhaps important new literature might be added in the
form of addenda during the editorial phase.
The production of the book is entirely up to the high standards set by previous issues from
the Academic Press. We may congratulate the editors and the publishers on their valuable
initiative.
'BIOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF GRAFTING"
1959
Editors: F. Albert and P. B. Medawar Blackwell, Oxford
453 pp.
Price: 50 s.
This book contains the proceedings of a Syposium held in Liege in March
1959. The book was published already in July of the same year. Although that
is now more than two years ago, the book still seems important enough to be
briefly reviewed in this edition.
The book contains 29 papers presented at the Symposium, with the discussions
which followed them. The large majority of the papers are in English.
Most participants came from Belgium, England and the U.S.A. Almost all
papers are concerned with original research on the immunological aspects of
grafting in adult animals, mostly mammals. Although developmental aspects
are left out of consideration, anyone carrying out or planning developmental
research in this field will certainly derive much benefit from reading it.
Unfortunately, the book lacks author and subject indexes. They have apparently fallen
victim to the urge for rapid publication, which in itself is to appreciated greatly.
"GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND PATTERN"
1961
by N. J. Berrill W. H. Freeman & Cy.
555 pp., 253 figs.
San Francisco, Cal.
Price: $ 10.00
This book was pritten primarily for advanced students and postgraduates.
It reflects to a large extent the personal views of the author, who has long
been actively engaged in research on vegetative development in lower inverte-
brates. One of his views is that the basic laws of development are better
brought to light in the simpler processes of development from somatic tissues
in lower animals and plants, than in the processes taking their origin in the
specialized egg-cell.
