Meet the EC: Alan Hanna
Fish Friers Review: Tell us a bit about your shop and its location.
Alan Hanna: Pitstop is located in my home town of Kilkeel, a small
fishing town in the heart of the Mournes.
FFR: How long have you been in the fish and chip trade and what
prompted you to start frying?
AH: At the age of 22, I soon realised that whilst living in a fishing
town, no one was actually producing good quality fish & chips. We
started out in a small rented premise in 1990 and now own the
building we are in and have extended it to 3'500 sq. feet which
includes 54 seats.
FFR: Are fish and chips as popular in Northern Ireland as they are
across the rest of Great Britain and do you have any regional
specialities to go with a fish supper you might not find over here?
AH: Fish & chips is very popular in Northern Ireland and in Kilkeel the
main fish we sell is Haddock although when the tourists come to town
they mostly buy Cod.
FFR: What have been your proudest achievements so far since
entering the trade?
AH: We have many achievements to be proud off but 2010 has been
our most successful year to date. The Northern Ireland Good Food
Guide held its first ever Chip Shop of the Year Awards and we were
delighted to not only win the County Award but also scooped the
overall award of Northern Ireland Chip Shop of the Year. This coupled
with the Regional win from Seafish Authority banked us the title of the
Triple Crown.
FFR: And what have been your biggest challenges?
AH: The biggest challenge we have faced was probably in 1999 when
we closed for major expansions and over stretched the budget. We
really had to work hard to overcome this but thankfully it paid off.
Issue 5 July 2011
As the Executive Council has recently taken on board several new
additions, we speak with the new Executive Councillor for Northern
Ireland, Alan Hanna to learn a bit more about his background and
aims for the future.
FFR: What are your future plans for your business and are there
any areas you would like to explore such as different products or
takeaways for example?
AH: Future plans for the business is to install a new EPOS Till & Menu
System with the facility to take online orders.
FFR: Where do you see our Industry heading and do you have an
opinion on how it can grow and keep up the competition with the
other of the high street food outlets?
AH: I see a strong future ahead in the fish & chip trade but only for
those that are prepared to work hard. As costs rise, customers
continue to expect top quality.
FFR: As recently appointed NFFF Executive councillor for Northern
Ireland, do you have any specific plans for working with members
in this area?
AH: My first objective as the new EC for Northern Ireland is to create
awareness about the NFFF and the new Quality Award.
FFR: Lastly, with the fish frying trade being such a busy one, how
do you like to relax when you get a day off?
AH: My days off are spent with family, as we live in the Mourne
Mountains, there is lots to explore. I also have two motorbikes which
i don't get out on enough and as i write this I am only 3 days away
from heading to the Spanish F1 Grand Prix. I try to get to 1 or 2 each
year and the rest of the time its work and sleep.
If you are operating in Northern Ireland and want to speak with
Alan about the Industry, the NFFF or any of our services he will be
happy to help. He is working to help and support all fellow fish and
chip shops.
