Portomarín, al principio para mi era un poco raro, y
tenía que vivir en este pequeño pueblo 5 meses. Pero,
después de muy poco tiempo, era como si fuésemos
hermanos y hermanas. ¡Nunca me reí tanto en mi
vida como cuando viví con ellos! El primer día del
trabajo en el albergue en Portomarín, fuimos Teele
y yo las que tuvimos que ir a trabajar solas. Marlon
era el único que podría hablar un español fluido,
pero tenía el día libre, y las habilidades de Teele y las
mías con el idioma eran muy básicas, así que estaba
muy nerviosa por si no podíamos comprender nada.
Cuando llegamos al trabajo, nuestra hospitalera
fue muy amable y comprensiva lo que nos relajó
inmediatamente. El trabajo no fue difícil, ayudamos
a peregrinos e hicimos algún trabajo administrativo.
Pasamos el día y todo fue bien, sonreía tanto
pensando que estaba trabajando en otro país sin ni
siquiera poder hablar el idioma.
Nos sentíamos como si fuéramos necesarios
en el albergue, especialmente cuando los peregrinos
no podrían hablar nada de español, fue útil que
pudiéramos estar allí para poder hablar diferentes
idiomas. Muchas veces, vi caras de alivio en los
peregrinos cuando se enteraron de que hablaba
inglés.
Para mi proyecto personal, yo hice un taller
de cultura inglés en Portomarín. Fue un verdadero
desafío porque yo nunca había enseñado a nadie
antes. La gente no hablaba inglés y mi español no
era genial, en ocasiones fue muy difícil para todos. A
veces luché realmente con el idioma, especialmente
con personas cuando hablaban demasiado rápido,
pero traté de aprender escribiendo palabras en la
mano y utilizando un diccionario.
Tuvimos algunos momentos estupendos, un
amigo nuestro de Portomarín nos llevó a la Coruña
el día de la final del mundial. La atmósfera era
asombrosa. ¡Cuando España ganó, el lugar entero se
volvió loco! Regresamos a Portomarín por la noche,
y la aldea entera estuvo extasiada, había fiestas por
todas partes, gente nadando desnudos en el río
para celebrarlo. También, el 24 de julio en Santiago

I did when I lived with them! On the first day of
work, in the albergue in Portomarín, it was Teele
and I who had to work alone. Marlon was the only
one who could speak fluent Spanish, but he had a
free day and Teele’s and my language skills were very
basic, so I was nervous that we wouldn’t understand
anything. When we arrived at work, our hospitalera
was very friendly and understanding, which relaxed
us immediately. The work wasn’t difficult; we were
helping pilgrims and doing some administration
work. We got through the day and everything went
well. I was smiling so much at the thought that I was
working in another country, whilst not even being
able to speak the language.
I feel like we were needed in the albergue,
especially when pilgrims couldn’t speak any Spanish,
it was great that we were there to speak different
languages. There were a lot of times when I saw
total relief on pilgrims’ faces when they knew I
spoke English.
For my personal project, I held a workshop on
the Culture of the English Language in Portomarín.
It was a real challenge, because I had never taught
anyone before. Every day, I had to make exercises
and homework. The local people did not speak any
English and my Spanish wasn’t great, so it was difficult
for all of us, at times! Sometimes, I really struggled
with the language, especially understanding people
when they spoke too quickly, but I tried to learn by
writing words on my hand and using a dictionary.
We had some great times. Our friend from
Portomarín took us to A Coruña on the day of the
World Cup Final. The atmosphere was amazing.
When Spain won, the whole place went crazy! We
came back to Portomarín that night, and the whole
village was ecstatic; there were fiestas everywhere
and people were swimming in the river at night in
the nude to celebrate. Also, the 24th July in Santiago
was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
There was a light show and a firework display by the
cathedral, which was unbelievable. Portomarín also
