Over the decades the humble
watch has been elevated
to superstar status.
Patek Philippe is the most
exclusive of them all
WATCH COLLECTORS
all over the world were
stunned when a pocket watch
commissioned by horology
enthusiast and wealthy
landowner Henry Graves Jr
in 1933 was sold at Sotheby’s
auction house for a staggering
US $11m in 1999, making it
the most expensive timepiece
ever sold. Created in order
to win a friendly competition
with Graves’ friend James
Ward Packard, the mechanical
pocket watch, dubbed the
‘Supercomplication’, came with
24 different functions, a feat
Words Martin Klipp
unheard of at the time. Its
maker? Patek Philippe.
Widely renowned as the
finest timepiece in the world,
Patek Philippe is the last
family-owned independent
watch manufacturer in Geneva.
Collections such as the
Calatrava, Nautilus, Aquanaut
and Ellipse d’Or are under the
logo of the Calatrava Cross
which dates back to the 12th
Century. Adopted by the first
military order in Castile, which
later won papal approval,
the symbol now represents
perfection and expertise.
