Housed in an ornate, century-old former power station, this branch of Stockholm’s Moderna Museet has a spectaculor perforated orange facade. The striking look has been turning heads since the museum opened near Malmö’s bustling pedestrian high-street area in December 2009. The museum’s modest size matters less than its international sophistication. One current exhibition on early modernism, ongoing until April 2012, consists of 33 select works, including several by Edvard Munch, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky and Pablo Picasso. Simultaneous exhibitions feature the iconoclastic work of Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) and that of Colombian-born sculptor Doris Salcedo (b. 1958), both ongoing until September. Like Malmö itself, a little sister to nearby Copenhagen, Denmark, the museum is diverse, interesting and small. Yet, as director Magnus Jensner points out, several large-scale developments in the city indicate “very dramatic changes”. Likewise, the new museum adds to a cultural scene that also boasts Malmö’s Konsthall’s Fine Art Museum and various galleries. “We are a part of something much larger,” Jensner adds. “There’s growing attention from all over Europe and it’s very interesting to be a part of it.” www.modernamuseet.se CREDIT
