HAPPY CAMPERS
The list of summer music festivals keeps getting
longer every year, but that just means more
opportunities to parade your best gear in front
of an audience of thousands. Whether you’re
a Benicàssim babe or dressing boho at Glasto,
there’s fashion fun to be had. Just add wristband.
Back in April, celebrities basked in the
California sunshine at the Coachella festival to
watch The Kills, Kanye West and Katy Perry. The
fi rst big festival of the year, Coachella always sets
the festival fashion benchmark for glamorous
groupies, so we were paying close attention.
Katy Perry traded her usual cartoonish
stage outfi ts for something altogether prettier
and more girly in a D&G lace dress. Her best
friend Rihanna chose a tougher look, dressed
for combat in a camoufl age jacket and those
ubiquitous festival faves: cut-off denim shorts.
Meanwhile, actress Kate Bosworth (pictured)
wore ice denim with a Topshop stars-and-stripes
T-shirt – a great look that we might borrow. It
would be perfect for Bestival (www.bestival.net)
on the Isle of Wight this year, which has a dressup
theme of Rock Stars, Pop Stars and Divas.
Among celebrities, and us normal folks,
1970s-style maxi dresses have also been
seen in abundance at festivals so far this year.
New
trend
“The 1970s look is key this year, and clashing
prints and crochet are the biggest emerging
trends. I defi nitely see a lot of crochet fl oppy
hats, peasant tops and fl owing dresses,” says
Fashionista.com reporter Hayley Phelan.
“I also see that people are opting for ankle
booties in lieu of sandals. Cut-off shorts are still ill
big, as are oversized shades, though this year
they’re rounder or cat-eyed. People are also
experimenting with prints, mixing tie-dye with
fl orals, or a bold tribal-printed purse with stripes.” pes.”
One summer festival essential is a hat. Try a
fl oppy-brimmed one like this style from M&S
(pictured below), which ties at the back with a
leopard print scarf for extra 1970s fl air. Bear in n
mind that a hat that’s too huge can swamp your ur
features. Another good look is a fedora or an
old-school boater, like those being produced by
Topshop at the moment.
If you’re going to a festival that might be
muddy, try the new Hunter Millbanks (see
below). These boots are Converse-style, rubber er
high-tops with a leather-look fi nish.
With the right festival outfi t, your look will
easily outshine the bands on stage.
