Netgear had to make some compromises to
keep the product at that price point. While
most media sites can be played directly
from the internet, the box has a convoluted
way of accessing streams from Hulu
and Netflix, requiring the computer to be
switched on and running special software
called PlayOn. In other words, the box isn’t
as powerful as laptops, which are able to
easily stream internet video.
Because of this difference in processors,
Leszinske thinks there will be difficulties
in bringing internet TV to more hardware.
“Most set-top boxes were designed to play
video, not run apps,” he says. “You’re now
running multiple software stacks on these,
and they’re getting pretty complicated.
That’s a big change.”
s all this focus on bringing internet
TV to the living room misguided?
Since people are increasingly using
their cell phones to watch video and
more robust networks are streaming
everything from YouTube clips to
movies, could the future of internet TV be
on smartphones instead?
“The iPhone has set an expectation of
an experience—getting [video] apps—in
the mobile space, and others are reacting
to it,” Leszinske says. He also points out
that it’s the seamlessness of the experience—being
able to move content from
one device to the next—that’s really driving
internet TV toward mobile devices.
“The video should scale to your platform,”
he says. “We see consumers wanting
to have the same content regardless of the
hardware. I think that the next big thing
will be applications that spread across
multiple platforms.”
It’s already starting to happen. MLB.
com now streams live games to iPhones
over AT&T’s network. The day is probably
not far off where you’ll be able to hit
a button to switch the stream from your
phone to your 50-inch TV, which will be
performing Herculean feats of computational
power to ensure your experience
is seamless. If that’s the future of internet
video, the picture’s looking pretty good.
