Dr. Peter Hanser-Strecker
Publisher
The piano is a wonderfully versatile instrument for children to learn and two of our
established authors have shown this with new publications in very different styles:
‘MicroLatin’ by Christopher Norton and ‘At the Piano’ by Carol Barratt. Adults are also
catered for in our selection including Piazzolla’s ‘El viaje’ containing magnificent tangos
and ‘Developing Rock Piano’ from the series containing Tim Richard’s award winning
‘Exploring Jazz Piano’.
A selection of string publications provide a wealth of material for all standards from
Edward Huws Jones’ ‘The Greek fiddler’, to Bernstein’s ‘Suite from West Side Story’ and
Stravinsky’s ‘Violin Collection’. Alternatively, as the wedding season approaches enjoy the
‘Wedding Collection’ for string quartet.
Vocal selections are plentiful. Following on from the success of Singing Sherlock 1 and 2,
Singing Sherlock 4 provides exciting repertoire for singing in primary schools. Other
releases include additions to the ’Best of’ series, introducing ‘Best of Canons and Rounds’.
For the accordion players among you we present ‘English Folk Tunes’, another gem
from The Schott World Music series. Whatever your instrument we hope you take
pleasure from browsing through this full and comprehensive selection and find lots of
new music to enjoy!

Homage to Bartók
for children & adults
Carol Barratt, creator of the
‘Bravo!’ series and one of the
finest writers of children’s music,
has now brought together a book
full of sparkling and fun pieces for
children and adults. Taking music
by Bartók as her inspiration, Carol
Barratt has written a series of
homages to the master, exploring
some of the same technical and
musical challenges faced by all
beginner pianists. Each piece presents
a different challenge, but,
above all, what is most important
is that they should be enjoyed!
Hoffmann, Ernst
Theodor Amadeus
Sonatas
Edited by Alexander Erhard
Many people know E.T.A Hoffmann
(1776-1822) only as an author of
fantastic stories and are often not
aware of the fact that he was a
reasonably good composer too.
This practical edition of his five
fully extant piano sonatas is
based on the scientific editions,
also published by Schott, of his
‘Selected Musical Works’.
Hoffmann himself recommends
these pieces as compositions
which are ‘set in the older style,
combined with the more cheerful
melodic drive of the new’ which
‘many piano players who are
indignant at the empty tirades of
the new piano composers’ long for.
Cadenza
Mozart,
Wolfgang Amadeus
Cadenza
Concert for Piano and Orchestra
in C major K 467
(1947)
In our latest volume, we publish
for the first time the cadenza written
by Paul Dessau in 1947 on
Mozart’s Piano Concerto K 467.
One may only speculate for which
occasion it was composed by
Dessau. Before returning to
Germany from the USA in 1948,
he had written numerous little
piano pieces, most of them for
piano lessons. In addition, he had
rewritten his early piano sonata
completely. In this context, he also
noted down the names of pianists
such as Vladimir Horowitz, Bruno
Eisner and Leon Fleisher with
whom he was in touch, hoping for
the performance of the sonata.
Perhaps the cadenza too was created
in this hope. We do not know
if it was ever performed. But now,
all pianists are given the chance
to play it!
Original text of the new Schumann
Complete Edition
Edited from the sources by
Joachim Draheim, fingerings and
notes on interpretation by Ljiljana
Borota and Christian Knebel
Vol. 2
Although Robert Schumann
absolutely loved to play a duet, he
wrote only few works for piano
duet. Created in 1848, Bilder aus
dem Osten Op. 66 was one of the
best-known and most frequently
played works in the piano duet literature
until the 20th century. But
the Polonaises Op. 3 by the
18-year-old composer following
the example of Franz Schubert and
even exceeding him in harmonic
boldness and tonal ingenuity
already showed the self-taught
Schumann was on the way to his
own style. After volume 1 which
contains the easier works composed
for music teaching purposes,
volume 2 now contains the
charming, yet hardly known
Ballszenen
Op. 109 in addition to the two
above-mentioned works.
Simbolo di pace
‘Silence does not just mean that
no word is spoken or no sound is
uttered. That alone does not constitute
silence yet... Silence rather
is what happens when a person
after he has spoken returns to
himself and becomes silent. Or
when he who could speak
remains silent…’
It is these words by the Catholic
Angel Scene
‘Abends will ich schlafen gehen’
from ‘Haensel and Gretel’
Edited by Johannes Geffert,
arranged by Edwin H. Lemare
The evening prayer ‘Abends will
ich schlafen gehen’ is certainly
one of the most beautiful and
moving pieces in Humperdinck’s
fairy-tale opera ‘Hansel and
Gretel’. The British organist Edwin
H. Lemare (1865-1934) who was
famous for his improvisations and
transcriptions wrote an arrangement
of this work under the title
of ‘Angel Scene’. Following closely
the original score and skilfully selecting
stops, he created a version
that still today does not fail to
have its desired effect on the
audience.
Senfter, Johanna
Variations about
‘Morgenglanz der
Ewigkeit’
Edited by Johannes Geffert
The overall oeuvre of Johanna
Senfter only includes three free
organ works: ‘Fantasie und Fuge’
Op. 30a (in: Female Composers,
ED 9741), the present variations
‘Morgenglanz der Ewigkeit’ Op. 66
and an organ piece in D minor
without opus number. Together
with the three cycles of chorale
preludes Op. 30b, Op. 70 (Schott
ED 9603) and Op. 73, the instrument
of the organ occupies a
rather small part in her oeuvre.
That puts the obvious point of
view, namely to see the composer
of such a ‘choral fantasia’ mainly
as a student of Reger, into perspective.
It is, on the contrary,
worth to get to know this major
work as a facet of the long life of
an artist whose major works still
wait to be rediscovered.
Edited by Maria Egelhof
Not much is known about the origin
of the ‘Berceuse’ Op. 16 composed
in 1878 or 1879 although it
surely is one of the most famous
works by Gabriel Fauré (1845-
Saint-Saëns, Camille
Introduction et
Rondo capriccioso
for violin and piano, op. 28
Edited by Maria Egelhof
Saint-Saëns added particularly to
the violin repertoire: with two
sonatas, three concertos and a
number of small works with piano
or orchestral accompaniment.
That was certainly also due to his
friendship with the Spanish violinist
Pablo de Sarasate who advised
him on what is technically
possible with the violin. The composer’s
friendship with the violinist
was probably the reason for
his penchant for Spanish colour
which is clearly noticeable in
‘Introduction et Rondo capriccioso’,
Op. 28 and in ‘Havanaise’.
Edited by Wolfgang Birtel and
In her music, the composer
Johanna Senfter, student of Max
While her music had been regarded
Plaines du Jour
for violin solo (2005)
Taking his starting point from 17th century philosopher-poet Cyrano
de Bergerac’s ‘Grandes Plaines du
Jour’, Hesketh powerfully fuses a
huge range of performing and
compositional techniques into this
12 minute work for solo violin.
Inspired by Bergerac’s imaginations
of other worlds and utopian
societies, the work explores
extreme ranges and timbres whilst
using techniques such as left hand
pizzicato and natural harmonics.
Open-fifth material, which is natural
to the instrument, is prominent
and short duets alternating
between arco and pizzicato figures
add yet another dimension.
Shchedrin, Rodion
Na pososhok
performed for the first time
A surprising effect is caused
by the appearance of the alto
musical action relatively late,
thus giving the piece a very
special, unconventional touch.
Beethoven,
Ludwig van
Sonatas for cello
and piano
Edited from the sources by
Christiane Wiesenfeldt
Arrangement of the cello part and
notes on interpretation by
Heinrich Schiff. Fingerings of the
piano part by Christian Ubber
With his sonatas for violoncello
and piano, Beethoven laid the
foundations for a totally new
chamber music genre which
inspired subsequent composers
such as Johannes Brahms and
Richard Strauss among others.
The extent of what has survived
of the five works by Beethoven is
quite different. Whereas all original
manuscripts of the two early
sonatas Op. 5 are missing, unusually
comprehensive source material
is extant of the late opus 102
which, however, leaves no less
serious questions unsettled. This
volume also contains the cello
version of the Horn Sonata Op. 17
the alternative instrumentation of
which can be regarded as
absolutely authentic according to
recent research.
Monodialogue
Fantasy for cello solo
Arrangement by Hillel Zori
Due to his numerous commissions
and performances in Europe and
America, the Israeli composer
Menachem Wiesenberg (* 1950)
is a highly acclaimed composer
not only in his home country. His
works, mainly written for orchestra
and different chamber music
ensembles, are characterized by
instrumental colour and clearly
outlined forms.
‘Monodialogue’ for cello solo was
originally written and dedicated to
the violist Tabea Zimmermann.
The basic melodic motive of the
piece is constructed on the musical
realisation of the letters of her
first name: Ta-Be-A, with Ta repre -
senting B, the German letter B
representing Bb, and A being A.
Characterized by high expressiveness,
one-movement piece are a musical
reflection of the interrelationship
between these three pitches.
Edited by Hugo and Reinhard
Matthias Ruf
Robert Valentine, born in Leicester
around 1680, was one of the few
English masters of Baroque music
who achieved fame and enjoyed a
high standing beyond the borders
of his home country instead of
within. He made his fortune in
Italy where he seemed to have
spent most of his lifetime. It is
assumed that he returned to
England in 1731. He died at an
unknown place around 1735.
Valentine was a talented composer.
Apart from some concertos,
he mainly wrote and published
solo sonatas, trio sonatas and
duets, works that clearly show his
preference for the flute, he himself
being a flautist.
Charles Koechlin
Le Portrait
de Daisy Hamilton
op. 140 (1934 – 38)
At long last, the music by Charles Koechlin is no longer
an insider's tip. With these editions, we introduce to you
a previously unknown facet of his œuvre: music inspired
by the cinema. At the age of 66, Koechlin saw the actress
Lilian Harvey playing the Princess Marie-Christine in
the film Princesse à vos ordres. He was so enchanted that
he wrote the marvellous miniatures Le Portrait de Daisy
Hamilton for her.
Three volumes of the unfinished Le Portrait de Daisy
Hamilton compositions have already been published by
Schott; now we publish for the first time two volumes
with eight pieces each for flute and piano and for clarinet
and piano respectively. Projected for seven volumes,
the series Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton finally makes
Koechlin's last, until now unpublished works from the
field of film accessible to posterity.
Plöner Musiktag
Evening Concert:
No. 5 Trio for Recorders
Scored for soloists or groups for
3 recorders (SAA or SAT) (1932)
‘We have to make music here the
whole day long!’ Such was the
enthusiastic response of Paul
Hindemith when he heard the
school orchestra of Plön. ‘We
start with an aubade blown from
the tower, then we play a cantata
and in the evening a serenade
in the Knights’ Hall.’
No. 5 of this evening music from
the ‘Plöner Musiktag’ is the ‘Trio
published as early as 1932 by
Walter Bergmann who adapted
the original phrasing and articulation
to the customs of recorder
playing at that time. This new edition
goes back to the original version
again, as recently published
in the Paul Hindemith Complete
From the repertoire for strings,
are imperative to the development
O’Carolan’s
Dream
15 Pieces for Flute (Violin)
and Piano
Edited by Patrick Steinbach
Unlike any other, Turlough
O’Carolan (1670-1738) knew how
to combine old Irish music with
Italian Baroque music which the
high society liked to listen to at
that time. The use of little repeating
motifs, the kind of melody
and way of tension building reveal
Carolan’s sense and knowledge of
the styles of playing typical of the
Baroque period. These Baroque
influences in his harp music became
his unmistakable trademark.
Thus, he created a whole new
Mattheson, Johann
Sonata A major
for flute (violin) and b. c.
Edited by Hugo Ruf
Johann Mattheson (1681-1764)
became known especially as a
theoretician with works such as
‘Der vollkommene Capellmeister’
and his basso continuo method.
However, Mattheson was not just
a knowledgeable theoretician but
also a practitioner of the musical
art from childhood. He knew
Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg
Philipp Telemann and Georg
Friedrich Handel in person and
was even bound to them by ties of
friendship. He wrote operas,
church and chamber music as
well as sonatas for keyboard and
melodic instruments.
This sonata shows the typical form
of the ‘sonata da chiesa’. After
the initial cantabile adagio, the
following allegro gives room for a
lively performance. The brief grave
section is an expressive counterpoint
before an enthusiastic giga
allows a sparkling display of virtuoso
skills. A rewarding piece for
lessons and concerts.
Azân
Suite for Flute and Organ, op. 61
(1977)
In Islam, Azân/Adhan is the name
for the muezzin’s call to the five
daily prayers. Each of the five pieces
that Falcinelli’s Op. 61 is
made up of refers to a verse of
the Koran and stands for one of
the prayers. ‘Azân’ was created at
the request of the organist
Eugène Pelletier and was performed
for the first time at the Paris
church Saint-Louis des Invalides
Hosokawa, Toshio
Lied
for flute and piano
The modern playing techniques
required by this brilliant piece
open up to the performer and the
listener a colourful, subtly differentiated
tonal world with quickly
changing musical incidents. They
reflect the penchant of Far
Eastern music for nature-related
imagery which is also characteristic
of Toshio Hosokawa’s oeuvre.
Toshio Hosokawa studied in Tokyo
and Germany with Isang Yun and
Klaus Huber among others. He
has received numerous awards
and prizes and is invited to attend
many important festivals of contemporary
music as a guest composer
Hosokawa’s compositions include
orchestral works, solo concertos,
chamber music works, music for
traditional Japanese instruments
and film music.
Krebs, Johann Ludwig
Triosonata B minor
for 2 flutes, cello (viola da gamba)
and piano (basso continuo)
Edited by Hugo Ruf
Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-80)
was a student of Johann Sebastian
Bach who greatly valued his musical
accomplishments and scholarly
knowledge. During his time in
Zwickau (1737-43) Krebs composed
a collection of six trio sonatas
‘Denen Liebhabern der Instru -
mental-Music zum angenehmen
Zeitvertreib’, the second of which
is the sonata published here.
Although still in the formal tradition
of the sonata da chiesa, the
four-movement church sonata, it
already points to the post
Baroque era, especially with
regard to the melody, to the gallant
sentimental movements. This
very charming work has been out
of print for a long time and is now
republished in the Edition Schott.
La fille aux
Arranged by Roger Brison
Flautists know Debussy to be the
composer of ‘Syrinx’. His penchant
shows in other works as well. As
a consequence, the arrangement
of well-known piano works for
this instrument seems to be justified.
Schreiner, Adolf
Always Smaller
A Humerous Fantasy
Edited by Rudolf Mauz
This showpiece by Adolf Schreiner
(1847-1921) is perfectly suited as
an encore or even for children’s
concerts. In accordance with the
composer’s instructions, the performer
gradually disassembles
the instrument, beginning with the
bell, until in the end he plays only
on the barrel. Performed with a
theatrical gesture, this humorous
Sight-Reading 1
A fresh approach
‘Saxophone Sight-Reading 1’ aims
to establish good practice and
provide an early introduction to the
essential skill of sight-reading.
Sight-reading in some form should
become a regular part of a student’s
routine, and this book aims
to establish the habit early in a
student’s learning process.
There are 8 sections, which in a
logical sequence gradually introduce
new notes, rhythms, articulations,
dynamics and Italian terms – much
as you would find in a beginner’s
saxophone method. The emphasis
is on providing idiomatic tunes
and structures rather than sterile
sight-reading exercises. Each section
contains several solo examples,
beginning with only three
notes, and concludes with duets
and accompanied pieces, allowing
the student to gain experience of
sight-reading within the context of
ensemble playing.
Sonatina
for alto saxophone and piano
(2007)
With this three-movement sonatina,
the Orff student Hermann
Regner contributes again his
share to modern teaching and
competition literature. In three
movements (Allegro, Larghetto,
Animato), this sonatina for alto
saxophone and piano provides a
cheerful and varied music that
leaves enough creative scope. The
moderately difficult piano part
allows for the accompaniment by
a pupil or student. Thus, the
sonatina is also perfectly suited
for recital evenings.
64 Studies from five Centuries
This volume is a compendium of
beginning with the first trumpet
methods such as that of Fantini
via the heyday of virtuoso literature
in the early 20th century to
The Prince of
Denmark’s March /
Trumpet Aire
2 Voluntarys for trumpet
and piano (organ),
edited by Gwilym Beechey
For a long time, the ‘Trumpet
Voluntary’ had been considered to
be a composition by Henry
Purcell, but it was Jeremiah
Clarke who actually composed
this highlight of trumpet literature.
Also known as The Prince of
Denmark March, it was originally
written for keyboard instruments.
Clarke (1674-1707), organist and
choir master at the London Saint
Paul’s Cathedral, composed a lot
of works, but this wonderful gem
is the only one that has remained
alive – and is often played at weddings
in England still today. The
same festive character can be
found in another composition by
Clarke – ‘Trumpet Aire’, an ideal
complement to the better known
sister work.
The two settings are now available
in a well-priced single edition –
Sonatine G major
for string quartet, op. 100
Arranged by Claus-Dieter Ludwig
Dvorak’s Sonatina in G major for
violin and piano, Op. 100 is one of
the most popular original works
of the Romantic period. It is part
of the standard repertoire in
music lessons. Our arrangement
for string quartet leaves the violin
part unchanged, yet adds the
three string instruments violin II,
viola and cello to the accompaniment
instead of the piano. Thus, it
is possible for the violinist to play
his part as first violin of a string
quartet. A good opportunity to gain
first chamber music experience!
Mansurjan, Tigran
String Quartet
No 1
Mansurjan’s String Quartet No. 1
(1983-84) takes us ‘on the long
road of simplicity, on a wonderful
journey during which the question
whether this music is new or old
can be answered very soon: It is
timeless in a delightful manner, but
not nostalgic in a negative sense,
often almost classical in its polyphonic
part-writing but not outdated.’
Characteristic of Armenian
music in general and Mansurjan’s
later works in particular is the
sparing use of all means of
expression, a certain unity in tone
colour and tonal onset. This style
is recognizable here for large part
but is broken by surges of emotion
and contrasts in dynamics
and articulation.
1. String Quartet
‘im Raum’
This string quartet by a grand
master of the German avantgarde
combines a decidedly traditional
four-movement structure
with experimental situations in
the concert hall. In various sections
the performers act on
revolving stools, in others they
take positions at the edge and in
the corners of the platform or
around the listeners. However,
the composer also allows a performance
in a conventional seating
arrangement which emphasizes
the work’s classical nature
with regard to material and form
even further.
Kessler, Thomas
NGH WHT
for speaker and string quartet
After the successful collaboration
concerning the work ‘said the
shotgun to the head’, the Swiss
composer Thomas Kessler has
again set a text of the rapper and
slam poet Saul Williams to music.
‘NGH WHT’ for narrator and string
quartet is based on Williams’
most recent book ‘The Dead
Emcee Scrolls’. Kessler developed
the musical structure from a
recording of the recited text. On
the one hand, the quartet has the
task to retell and decode the
poem, on the other hand, voice
and instruments enter into a ‘fluid
process between approach and
distance, synchrony and time
shift, adaptation and resistance’.
Fibich, Zdenko
Poème
from ‘Am Abend’, op. 39
Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel
The fact that the Bohemian composer
Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900)
is in the shadow of Smetana and
Dvorák is totally unjustified
because he, too, was instrumental
in the foundation of the Czech
national school. His best-known
work is probably the subsidiary
theme from his symphonic poem
‘At Twilight’, which has become
famous under the name of
‘Poème’. The violinist Jan Kubelík
played this tune under this title
since 1908, and as such the work
has become known and, with its
catchy charm, is now one of the
most popular classical themes.
Ravel, Maurice
Le Tombeau de
Couperin
for piano trio arranged by
Matthew van Brink
Created during the First World
War, Maurice Ravel’s composition
‘Le Tombeau de Couperin’ casts a
longing look at the past while at
the same time being full to the
brim with traces of modern music.
Each of the six movements is
dedicated to friends who died in
battle. In 1919 Ravel arranged
four of these movements for large
orchestra by skilfully borrowing
melodic lines and colours from
the piano setting.
In the present new arrangement
written for the Stella Piano Trio,
these elements were adjusted to
the instrumentation and their
relationship within the ensemble.
As in Ravel’s orchestration, each
note is taken into account, even if
the cello is sometimes given a
melody which is an octave lower
than the original.
Mansurjan, Tigran
Agnus Dei
for clarinet, violin, cello and piano
Composed in 2006 for the 15th Oleg Kagan Festival in Wildbad
Kreuth, ‘Agnus Dei’ is one of
Mansurjan’s meditative works in
which he aims at a synthesis of
new techniques and old Armenian
musical tradition which is fed
equally by folk and church music.
The quartet is based on three texts
from the Latin mass (I Agnus Dei,
II Qui tollis peccata mundi, III
Miserere) as intellectual idea; its
musical form is characterized by
melodic restraint, rhythmic ostinato
models and interval structures
as well as by transparent,
oscillating sound layers. ‘The
quiet tenderness of the sound
waves reaching the ear rather
feels like a mystic breeze that
lightly grazes the skin.’
Jost, Christian
Sepulchral City
Music for Clarinet in Bb,
Cello and Piano
What inspired Christian Jost to
write this piece was Joseph
Conrad’s novel ‘Heart of
Darkness’ in which the protagonist
Marlow says about the city of
Brussels: ‘In a few hours I arrived
in a city that always makes
me think of a whited sepulchre.’
In ‘Sepulchral City’, a work commissioned
to mark the 10th anniversary of the Jerusalem
Chamber Music Festival, however,
the title refers to Jerusalem, the
city of white tombs. The topic of
Jost’s trio is a travel into the soul
and living spirit of a city, with no
physical movement being needed
to find the heart of impenetrable
darkness: It lies within the city
walls.
In this respect, ‘Sepulchral City’
equals a compositionally unfolded
funeral bell. Even the animated
middle section rather has insisting
than progressive power. At
the end, the only thing to do is to
inhale and exhale.
Schweitzer, Benjamin
entschlackt
(Piece in
Two Parts)
for oboe, trumpet, cello and piano
(2006-07)
As usual, the young composer
Benjamin Schweitzer dares player
and listener to let themselves in
for unusual sounds and complicated
rhythms. Ambitious performers
can try out modern playing techniques
in this interesting piece.
‘entschlackt [Piece in Two Parts]’
is an attempt to write clear and
concentrated music without getting
‘simple’ on the surface. The
‘purified’ finds expression both in
form and sound. The dramatic
tension develops from the succession
but sometimes also from the
overlapping of short sections in
every possible combination of the
instruments and from the asymmetry
of the two movements. The
first one, in a gently flowing tempo,
is of a cautious nature almost
throughout. This ‘preparation’ is
followed by a surprisingly short
second part in a speedy tempo.
Edited by David Guest
The Boosey & Hawkes Concerts
for Choirs series is an innovative
approach to concert planning for
choirs. Each volume contains a
wealth of material to help the
choral director assemble a concert
programme – all from one
volume. The anthology draws on
the vast Boosey and Hawkes
archive and also includes many
specially-composed or newlyarranged
pieces.
‘Confetti and Cake’ is a collection
of familiar and not-so-familiar
songs suitable for all types of
wedding, whether a traditional
church service or a civil ceremony.
A selection of your favourite
hymns is included and there
are even some choral arrangements
that would go down well at
any reception. All these have been
compiled by David Guest of The
Vasks, Peteris
Klusas dziesmas
for mixed choir (SATB)
(1979/1992)
It is particularly the choral music
of Peteris Vasks that reveals his
strong attachment to his Latvian
home country. Nature, customs
and traditions and the idea of freedom
are the central themes of
his musical settings. He carefully
incorporated modern techniques
of choral music. Alternating with
traditional, or even archaic singing,
a very colourful, impressive
tonal image develops in front of
the listener.
The four short homophonous
movements are easy to sing, thus
having a folksong-like character.
We have added to this edition
German and English translations
for better understanding as well
as phonetic transcriptions of the
Latvian language.
Der Sonnengesang
des
Franz von Assisi
for 2 mixed choirs (SATB/SATB)
a cappella
‘Sonnengesang’ [Canticle of the
Sun] is part of world literature
and has had a decisive influence
on Italian poetry. It is considered
to be the ‘lullaby of the Italian
language’. The musical setting of
the Canticle of the Sun is written
in German. To conjure up the
‘ancient’ aura of the original, just
a few words are quoted from the
Old Italian.
The musical setting of the Canticle
of the Sun tries to capture the
folkloristic style of the original. As
a consequence, no choral techniques
of the new music were to be
used (although there sometimes
are whispers or cluster chords).
The piece was rather inspired by
the sonority of Old Italian chants,
as can still be heard in Sardinia
and Corsica today, with long stationary
chords and parallel voice
leading. (Enjott Schneider)
Trois Chansons
for mixed choir a cappella (SATB)
(1916)
Revised edition of the famous choral
songs by the composer of ‘Bolero’.
This cycle, too, is designed for a
great climax. ‘Nicolette’ describes
a simple, almost naïve fairy-tale
character. The solos of the middle
movement in the style of a sarabande
can be performed by members
of the choir. The final ‘Rondo’
is highly virtuosic, with an abundance
of allusions to ancient
mythological figures. This cycle is
the ideal complement to the chansons
by Claude Debussy (SKR
Will Todd, born in 1970, is forging
a composer who is equally at
ease in opera, oratorio, church
instantly accessible and lastingly
memorable. He spent his formative
years steeped in both jazz and
the English choral tradition so in
his choral music he is able to
juxtapose strong rhythmic drive
and rich harmonies with exquisitely
lyrical vocal lines.This glorious
The composition sets to music the
verses of Jaroslav Seifert from
the collection ‘Turn Out the Lights’
(Zhasnete svetla) which was written
in the period of the nation’s
peril prior to the Second World
patriotism expressed in
these texts has long outgrown the
continues to bear witness to
Seivert’s fervent love for this
Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel
No, it is not only Mozart that one
has to think of when hearing the
Ave verum, or Bach/Gounod when
hearing the Ave Maria: Camille
Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), too, set
these texts to music several times
– for example, for organ (without
The organ may even be replaced
by a piano, the vocal parts can be
sung by two sopranos, soprano
and mezzo-soprano, or soprano
good, one may even consider a
are squarely in the tradition of
French lied composition such as
by Gabriel Fauré. Here, Naoumoff
chose texts by late 19th-century
French lyricists: Auguste Villiers
de l’Isle-Adam, Emile Verhaeren,
Charles Baudelaire and René-
François Sully-Prudhomme.
In their elegance and suppleness,
the four songs sound typically
French. As they are all easy to sing
and have not been composed
‘against’ the voice, they are perfectly
suited for both music lessons
and concert programmes.
Wagner, Richard
Lohengrin
Romantic Opery in three acts
Many Wagner lovers and musicians
wish for piano scores of
Richard Wagner’s operas based
on the complete edition which is
to be completed soon. We therefore
aim at publishing all piano
scores of Richard Wagner’s major
operas based on the musical text
of the complete edition by his
200th birthday in 2013.
The piano score of the original
version of the opera ‘The Flying
Dutchman’ (ED 8065) which has
been available for some time is
now followed by Wagner’s romantic
opera ‘Lohengrin’.
Hummel, Bertold
Eight Fragments
from Letters of
Vincent van Gogh
for baritone and string quartet,
op. 84 (1985)
With the ‘Eight Fragments’
Bertold Hummel has successfully
created a most impressive work.
Uncommonly concentrated in the
evoking of atmosphere and reflecting
the texts strongly, these
songs develop a sadly expressive,
almost somnambulant charm. The
music is highly expressive,
exploiting the various performing
and bowing possibilities of the
stringed instruments and their
capacity for nuances to the limits;
occasionally oppressive visions in
sound appear. It is music in danger,
of a most fragile balance. Nor
are subtle musical references
missing. With only one note, following
the word ‘music’, harmony
and tonality are conjured up.
In my craft or
Goodison Quartet No. 4
for tenor and string quartet
(2007)
Setting Dylan Thomas’s evocative
yet humble poem ‘In my craft or
sullen art’, Watkins conjures up a
beautifully introspective introduction
with the use of a simple quintuplet
motif which is later transformed
into a reflective coda. The
main body of the work comprises
of two contrasting settings of the
poem separated by an extended
passage for quartet alone giving
the opportunity for some virtuosic
and expressive string writing.
Commissioned by Nicholas and
Judith Goodison, ‘In my craft or
sullen art’ is the final piece in a
series of works they commissioned
for voice and string quartet.
Emotions from intense anger to
Anthony Turnage’s ‘The Torn
Rosenberg and Charles Sorley;
the latter two of whom were killed
in the trenches. Despite the
dark nature of the work, it concludes
Bizet, Georges
Carmen Suite I
on the critical edition
by Robert Didion
‘Carmen’ is one of the most popular
and most frequently performed
operas across the globe. Its composer
Bizet did not live to see the
world premiere which proved to
be a flop. Nevertheless, the opera
very quickly gained acceptance at
all major theatres, bringing in its
wake countless arrangements of
some particularly beautiful music
numbers, among them the Carmen
Fantasia for violin and orchestra
by the Spanish violin virtuoso
Pablo de Sarasate.
It was, in all probability, Bizet’s
close friend and fellow student
Ernest Guiraud who brought 12
numbers of the opera together to
form two orchestral suites. The
missing singing voices were
replaced by instruments, as was
common practice in such cases.
In addition to the two pocket scores,
full score and orchestral parts
are available as hire material.
Ravel, Maurice
Concerto for the
left hand
Two masterpieces of piano literature
of entirely different character:
The very lively three-movement
Piano Concerto in G major is
characterized, with regard to
style, by jazz influences, especially
in the first and third movements,
but by late Romantic and
impressionist influences in the
middle movement. Ravel himself
called it ‘a concerto in the truest
sense of this generic term: With
that, I want to say that it has been
written in the spirit of the concertos
by Mozart and Saint-Saëns.’
The one-movement concerto in D
major for the left hand combines
powerful monumental sounds
with a slender exotic orchestration.
Commissioned by the Austrian
pianist Paul Wittgenstein whose
right arm had to be amputated
following a war injury, the onemovement
piano setting seems
amazingly complete all the same.
Pomp and
Circumstance
Marches 1-5 for orchestra
Edited by Brian Bowen
Pride, pomp, and circumstance of
glorious war – It is these words
from Shakespeare’s Othello that
the probably best-known work by
the English composer Sir Edward
William Elgar falls back on: the
five marches which are contained
in Pomp and Circumstance
Marches, op. 39.
The work was a sensational success
from the very beginning,
especially March No. 1 should be
going around in the head of every
lover of classical music. At its premiere
in 1901 under the composer’s
direction, the audience
requested two repeats; in 1902
the words of ‘Land of Hope and
Glory’ were added to the march at
the request of Edward VII for his
coronation ceremonial. The resulting
version is now performed
every year at the Last Night of the
Proms and as an English hymn at
the Commonwealth Games.
Locatelli, Pietro
6 Introduzioni
teatrali
for string orchestra
With his ‘6 Introduzioni teatrali’,
composed in 1735, the talented
Italian violinist and composer
Pietro Locatelli perhaps paid tribute
to the great demand on the
part of the Dutch amateur orchestras.
But were the master and
his oeuvre actually as well adjusted
as it seems?
Locatelli’s works were well known
throughout Europe until the end of
the 18th century, although the
composer led a very secluded life.
He had no students and never
performed in public. In his adopted
city Amsterdam he worked
freely, without being controlled by
the church or the court. An unusual
lifestyle for an 18th-century composer – and also an unusual
composition?
latter still is extant today. At the
