(1947) 

In our latest volume, we publish 

for the first time the cadenza written 

by Paul Dessau in 1947 on 

Mozart’s Piano Concerto K 467. 

One may only speculate for which 

occasion it was composed by 

Dessau. Before returning to 

Germany from the USA in 1948, 

he had written numerous little 

piano pieces, most of them for 

piano lessons. In addition, he had 

rewritten his early piano sonata 

completely. In this context, he also 

noted down the names of pianists 

such as Vladimir Horowitz, Bruno 

Eisner and Leon Fleisher with 

whom he was in touch, hoping for 

the performance of the sonata. 

Perhaps the cadenza too was created 

in this hope. We do not know 

if it was ever performed. But now, 

all pianists are given the chance 

to play it!

18-year-old composer following

one of the most beautiful and 

moving pieces in Humperdinck’s 

fairy-tale opera ‘Hansel and 

Gretel’. The British organist Edwin 

H. Lemare (1865-1934) who was 

famous for his improvisations and 

transcriptions wrote an arrangement 

of this work under the title 

of ‘Angel Scene’. Following closely 

the original score and skilfully selecting 

stops, he created a version 

that still today does not fail to 

have its desired effect on the 

audience.

Naji Hakim, born in Beirut in 1955, was a student of 

Jean Langlais and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris 

with Marcel Bitsch, Rolande Falcinelli and Jacques 

Castérède among others. From 1985-1993 he was an 

organist at the basilica Sacré-Coeur in Paris and then 

succeeded Olivier Messiaen as an organist at the Eglise 

de la Sainte-Trinité. Hakim is considered to be one of 

the most important representatives of the great French 

tradition of organists, composers and improvisers. 

He is professor at the Conservatoire National de 

Boulogne-Billancourt and visiting professor at the

War, Maurice Ravel’s composition 

‘Le Tombeau de Couperin’ casts a 

longing look at the past while at

Each of the six movements is 

dedicated to friends who died in 

battle. In 1919 Ravel arranged 

four of these movements for large 

orchestra by skilfully borrowing 

melodic lines and colours from 

the piano setting.

assumed that he returned to 

England in 1731. He died at an 

unknown place around 1735. 

Valentine was a talented composer.

by the cinema. At the age of 66, Koechlin saw the actress 

Lilian Harvey playing the Princess Marie-Christine in 

the film Princesse à vos ordres. He was so enchanted that

Hamilton for her. 

Three volumes of the unfinished Le Portrait de Daisy 

Hamilton compositions have already been published by

The fact that the Bohemian composer 

Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) 

is in the shadow of Smetana and 

Dvorák is totally unjustified 

because he, too, was instrumental 

in the foundation of the Czech 

national school. His best-known 

work is probably the subsidiary 

theme from his symphonic poem 

‘At Twilight’, which has become 

famous under the name of 

‘Poème’. The violinist Jan Kubelík 

played this tune under this title 

since 1908, and as such the work 

has become known and, with its 

catchy charm, is now one of the 

most popular classical themes.

Le Tombeau de 

Couperin 

for piano trio arranged by

Created during the First World 

War, Maurice Ravel’s composition 

‘Le Tombeau de Couperin’ casts a 

longing look at the past while at 

the same time being full to the 

brim with traces of modern music. 

Each of the six movements is 

dedicated to friends who died in 

battle. In 1919 Ravel arranged 

four of these movements for large 

orchestra by skilfully borrowing 

melodic lines and colours from 

the piano setting. 

In the present new arrangement 

written for the Stella Piano Trio, 

these elements were adjusted to 

the instrumentation and their 

relationship within the ensemble. 

As in Ravel’s orchestration, each 

note is taken into account, even if 

the cello is sometimes given a 

melody which is an octave lower 

than the original.

What inspired Christian Jost to 

write this piece was Joseph 

Conrad’s novel ‘Heart of 

Darkness’ in which the protagonist 

Marlow says about the city of 

Brussels: ‘In a few hours I arrived 

in a city that always makes 

me think of a whited sepulchre.’ 

In ‘Sepulchral City’, a work commissioned 

to mark the 10th anniversary of the Jerusalem 

Chamber Music Festival, however, 

the title refers to Jerusalem, the 

city of white tombs. The topic of 

Jost’s trio is a travel into the soul 

and living spirit of a city, with no 

physical movement being needed 

to find the heart of impenetrable 

darkness: It lies within the city 

walls. 

In this respect, ‘Sepulchral City’ 

equals a compositionally unfolded 

funeral bell. Even the animated 

middle section rather has insisting 

than progressive power. At 

the end, the only thing to do is to 

inhale and exhale.

form and sound. The dramatic 

tension develops from the succession 

but sometimes also from the 

overlapping of short sections in 

every possible combination of the 

instruments and from the asymmetry 

of the two movements. The 

first one, in a gently flowing tempo, 

is of a cautious nature almost 

throughout. This ‘preparation’ is 

followed by a surprisingly short 

second part in a speedy tempo.

‘Sonnengesang’ [Canticle of the 

Sun] is part of world literature 

and has had a decisive influence 

on Italian poetry. It is considered 

to be the ‘lullaby of the Italian 

language’. The musical setting of 

the Canticle of the Sun is written 

in German. To conjure up the 

‘ancient’ aura of the original, just 

a few words are quoted from the 

Old Italian. 

The musical setting of the Canticle 

of the Sun tries to capture the 

folkloristic style of the original. As 

a consequence, no choral techniques 

of the new music were to be 

used (although there sometimes 

are whispers or cluster chords). 

The piece was rather inspired by 

the sonority of Old Italian chants, 

as can still be heard in Sardinia 

and Corsica today, with long stationary 

chords and parallel voice

‘Carmen’ is one of the most popular 

and most frequently performed 

operas across the globe. Its composer 

Bizet did not live to see the 

world premiere which proved to 

be a flop. Nevertheless, the opera 

very quickly gained acceptance at 

all major theatres, bringing in its 

wake countless arrangements of 

some particularly beautiful music 

numbers, among them the Carmen 

Fantasia for violin and orchestra 

by the Spanish violin virtuoso

It was, in all probability, Bizet’s

The work was a sensational success 

from the very beginning, 

especially March No. 1 should be 

going around in the head of every 

lover of classical music. At its premiere 

in 1901 under the composer’s 

direction, the audience 

requested two repeats; in 1902 

the words of ‘Land of Hope and 

Glory’ were added to the march at 

the request of Edward VII for his 

coronation ceremonial. The resulting 

version is now performed 

every year at the Last Night of the 

Proms and as an English hymn at 

the Commonwealth Games.
