Mansurjan, Tigran
String Quartet
No 1
Mansurjan’s String Quartet No. 1
(1983-84) takes us ‘on the long
road of simplicity, on a wonderful
journey during which the question
whether this music is new or old
can be answered very soon: It is
timeless in a delightful manner, but
not nostalgic in a negative sense,
often almost classical in its polyphonic
part-writing but not outdated.’
Characteristic of Armenian
music in general and Mansurjan’s
later works in particular is the
sparing use of all means of
expression, a certain unity in tone
colour and tonal onset. This style
is recognizable here for large part
but is broken by surges of emotion
and contrasts in dynamics
and articulation.
Schnebel, Dieter
1. String Quartet
‘im Raum’
This string quartet by a grand
master of the German avantgarde
combines a decidedly traditional
four-movement structure
with experimental situations in
the concert hall. In various sections
the performers act on
revolving stools, in others they
take positions at the edge and in
the corners of the platform or
around the listeners. However,
the composer also allows a performance
in a conventional seating
arrangement which emphasizes
the work’s classical nature
with regard to material and form
even further.
Kessler, Thomas
NGH WHT
for speaker and string quartet
After the successful collaboration
concerning the work ‘said the
shotgun to the head’, the Swiss
composer Thomas Kessler has
again set a text of the rapper and
slam poet Saul Williams to music.
‘NGH WHT’ for narrator and string
quartet is based on Williams’
most recent book ‘The Dead
Emcee Scrolls’. Kessler developed
the musical structure from a
recording of the recited text. On
the one hand, the quartet has the
task to retell and decode the
poem, on the other hand, voice
and instruments enter into a ‘fluid
process between approach and
distance, synchrony and time
shift, adaptation and resistance’.
