Helmschrott,
Robert M.
Simbolo di pace
‘Silence does not just mean that
no word is spoken or no sound is
uttered. That alone does not constitute
silence yet... Silence rather
is what happens when a person
after he has spoken returns to
himself and becomes silent. Or
when he who could speak
remains silent…’
It is these words by the Catholic
priest and theologian Romano
Guardini that the very quiet and
meditative organ piece is based on.
Angel Scene
‘Abends will ich schlafen gehen’
from ‘Haensel and Gretel’
Edited by Johannes Geffert,
arranged by Edwin H. Lemare
The evening prayer ‘Abends will
ich schlafen gehen’ is certainly
one of the most beautiful and
moving pieces in Humperdinck’s
fairy-tale opera ‘Hansel and
Gretel’. The British organist Edwin
H. Lemare (1865-1934) who was
famous for his improvisations and
transcriptions wrote an arrangement
of this work under the title
of ‘Angel Scene’. Following closely
the original score and skilfully selecting
stops, he created a version
that still today does not fail to
have its desired effect on the
audience.
