10 STANDING OUT from the rest A’ nxiously rolling around in bed all night, repeating the perfect answer over and over again in your head or nervously wiping off your sweaty palms may be some signs that a big job interview is in your future. No matter the case, as you walk up to the doors, which could contain a short or long term future, there’s always one lingering question in the back of your head; how can I make a lasting impression? When those doors open, so do the opportunities. There’s no doubt that making a good first impression is important. Most of us know that walking up to the interviewer and giving a firm handshake is important.It shows character; however there are a lot more ways to sell yourself. Eric Hilden runs the career center at Saddleback College and is a professional resume writer. He explains the right steps to take during the interviewing process. “Non-verbal interactions often offer the interviewer a feeling of how you’ll fit on the team,” Hilden said. “It starts with how you carry yourself, how you maintain eye contact, how you shake hands and how you develop rapport with the interviewer,” he said. Your wardrobe is also important. “A general rule is to dress a notch better than what you’d wear on the job at the company,” Hilden said. For example, if the job is more casual, wear slacks and a button down shirt or pants along with a nice blouse. If the job is formal, men should wear a dress shirt with tie while women wear a dress suit or skirt.A simple thing like making sure your hair is out of your face makes a good impression as well.” Hilden Saddleback College Magazine By Taylor Carney said, “Men, pull up your pants and wear a belt.” Saddleback student Evelyn Caicedo thinks how you present yourself in an interview is important. “I always want to use proper etiquette,” she said. A person’s hygiene is just as important as what they wear. “The person asking the questions across the desk may have a positive or negative experience with how you dress and look,” Hilden said. “It’s very difficult to overcome a bad first impression of poor dress and long, dirty fingernails as you discuss your talents and accomplishments in the interview.” Keep the beard tailored, the fingernails trimmed, visible body jewelery removed and tattoos hidden.“The goal is to not Impress the best and beat your competitors with advice by a pro. Communicate clearly and show off your personality. let any of these things become an obstacle,” Hilden said. Some companies look for that certain personality or particular image. How could a person know this before going into an interview?
Hilden suggests, “Research is a must!” Those that research develop a strategy to provide positive examples that apply the skills they are looking for will be considered more often than those who don’t. Understanding the company mission, products and leadership team can be a successful tool. The Internet can be a resource to provide the mission. Some key words to look for in a mission statement include, hospitality, customer service, managing, etc. Besides just googling the company name, look up the company social media and blog sites. By knowing what the company is looking for, a person’s confidence can shine during the interview. In a common series of questions one might hear, “do you have any questions for us?” This is a prime time to explore topics in the business and show what you know. “I often say to students, ‘you want to make it seem like you’re already part of the team,’” Hilden said. It shows the interviewer that you’ve done some homework and are truly dedicated to the job. For some, an interview can be intimidating; however, confidence should always be displayed. “I think maintaining eye contact during an interview is a good way to keep a good lasting impression,” Caicedo said. “If there are things you know you’re doing during the interview, try stopping it or find a way to address it with the interviewer,” Hilden said. For example, if a person talks really fast because they are nervous they could comically bring it up and say, “I normally don’t talk this fast, I’m just a little nervous.” Another tip would be not to chew gum, play with hair or twiddle your thumbs together. Take care of these habits before you go into the interview,” Hilden said. When the interview is over, dont stop making that lasting impression. “Follow up. It may be that there are a few strong candidates and how you act after the interview may show an employer that you’re the one to pick,” Hilden said. “Send a hand written note card to the interviewer thanking them for their time.” Caciedo said, “I think the best way to make a lasting impression is to be yourself and show off your personality.” Remember, making a lasting impression can take you further in life than just a job interview. Connections with various people can allow you to have opportunities that one could only dream of. Keep up a positive attitude to influence not just your life, but others as well.
