Doc-in-a-Box Mastermind Article Many students escape the pressures of college life watching modern cartoons such as Futurama, and know “Bender” the somewhat taciturn Robot created to bend steel. These same students may be interested to learn Bender has a fleshand-blood alter ego in the form of a Newport Beach Philanthropist of the same name who is also famous for his ability to bend steel to his will. Unlike the cartoon robot, the real human being converts steel shipping containers into portable health centers. Newport Beach Conservancy past president Steve Bender is a powerfully built man with large hands and a firm grip, coupled with a nearly constant smile. Greeting visitors at his Villa on Promontory Point, he leans back in a leather chair overlooking the ocean. As the morning sun sends shafts of light through the beachside window, Bender describes his vision for the future. “My goal is to produce 100 (cargo) boxes every year so that they can be transported and used wherever there is a need,” he says. Anyone driving the freeway in Southern California eventually sees rectangular metal container boxes on the backs of trucks. Close inspection shows heavy 16 gauge steel construction with solid welds, reinforced edges and long posts designed 20 Saddleback College Magazine and Illustration by Paul Ingvaldsen to lock large bay doors at the end. Engineered to be hauled on virtually anything that can carry its weight, cargo boxes may be stacked as high as 16 boxes or 500 feet tall. A new purpose for the sturdy metal structures grows as the real Bender puts words into action. The process of recycling cargo boxes is becoming an art form, designed to survive circumstances where other shelters collapse. In a worst-case scenario, if a flood comes, the containers may be locked and allowed to float away until the flood recedes. Not even lava can melt the steel walls. Bender uses the advantage of steel’s strength in creating durable, multi-purpose medical stations. He puts in doors and windows, places solar panels on the roof and adds awnings to cover new openings. He fits them as fully equipped medical units to be dropped in remote jungles, or inaccessible sites like parts of Afghanistan. Like all good things, Bender’s idea has inspired others. At Mariner’s, the Mega Church in Irvine, a brightly painted cargo box is bound for Malawi, Africa. This box more resembles an apartment than a container. Insulated inside with electrical outlets, its exterior is covered with images of animals, birds and plants surrounding a blue sunburst. Loadmaster Don Deputy surveys the “Arc”—Mariner’s name for the cargo box. “Every day is a little miracle that needs to be changed,” he says as he loads another pallet. Deputy’s job is to oversee the loading of pallets filled with clothing, toys and other donated items from generous Orange County families. He makes sure every item is listed on the cargo manifest or the container may be held up for months. Meanwhile, in Bell, Calif., the new location of the Long Beach Naval Station, Seal Team Candidate Christopher Crocetti describes another cargo box. “It holds our supplies better then a tent because we can lock it,” he says. “We made it into our office.” Bay doors stand open at the entrance to a 40-foot cargo container. Inside, a sharp looking Navy Sea Cadet stands on guard behind a podium between the American flag and the Navy banner at parade rest. He snaps to attention whenever anyone approaches his post. From the tiny acorn of an original idea, a mighty Oak grows as Bender’s ingenuity spreads globally. “The Organization’s purpose is to build, transport and maintain medical and educational structures around the world.” To contact Bender, email him at stevebender@docinabox.org.
Luxury at the Movies San Juan Capistrano Theater offers a higher standard of comfort Article and Photos by Sean Buckman The words “here’s looking at you kid” may flash through any “Casablanca” fans’ head while walking the streets of downtown San Juan after seeing the Rick’s Café sign next to the The Depot train station. If not, the giant Regency sign above it will catch your eye after sundown when it’s completely lit up like an old style movie marquee. Inside this building, beneath its many signs, is a theatre and restaurant that specializes in giving their guests the highest standard—VIP treatment. It was in March of 2010 when Regency reopened the doors of the previously abandoned theater in the heart of downtown San Juan Capistrano, next to the train station and Old San Juan. The owners decided to try something a little different by taking the high road of providing luxury and great customer service while audiences relax and enjoy movie entertainment. Regency has three full sized auditoriums equipped with leather reclining seats and adjustable arm rests. There is an additional VIP auditorium which features even more space for guests, and less seats to accommodate as many people, making the atmosphere more intimate for the those observing. If the cushy leather seats aren’t enough, Rick’s Cafe offers a full menu that includes everything from appetizers to full entrees that can either be enjoyed in Rick’s Café upstairs, or the staff will serve you while you enjoy your movie. Rick’s also offers a bar featuring 28 different beers and 31 different types of wine. Regency, because of its size, doesn’t get as many titles as the larger theatres. However, Manager Lawrence Lopez explains that they still get great selections. “We actually receive first pick of some movies, allowing us to veritably show some films that other theaters in the area maybe won’t be showing.” He also led on to tell that movies are chosen based on the general customer demographic which covers anywhere from 21 to 80. “We like to show films that are popular with our VIP crowd,” which is the demographic that elect the VIP auditorium for viewing. “Many of the other films we show are mainstream family features, adult dramas and comedies.” This means that horror film movie-going fans will be sorely dissappointed, but those seeking anything else will probably find what they want here. With the theater less than four miles from Saddleback, it’s an ideal place to unwind, be entertained or celebrate something special. Matthew Kulick is a 21-year-old student confirms: “It’s one of those places you can spend special occasions.” Regency adds a nice twist on the entire “dinner and a movie” cliché making it a spot to hit to enjoy a movie without the crowds that a normal theatre offers, or perhaps just grab a bite to eat and a beverage.
