Bumpin’ in SoCal An inside look at southern California’s favorite summer sport. You lay out into the warm sand, catching your opponents off guard as the ball is returned over the net, earning you the winning game point. You pick yourself up with a sense of satisfaction, your sweaty body covered in sand, and shake your opponents hand. You then run toward the ocean to cool off and rinse the sand away. You soak in the waves for a while, spending the perfect day in the place that claims the best beach volleyball courts and players in the country. After all, Southern California is where beach volleyball first made an appearance, taking on a life of its own. Whether you are a beginner with an interest in the sport or an advanced player who focuses on competition, the sport can be molded to fit you. Especially in the summer, players of every skill level fill the courts across the county beaches. We have the luxury of being able to play year-round, but the summer is when the sport thrives. Between the thousands of players playing pick-up games, beach volleyball camps, public tournaments, and professional tournaments, there is never a shortage of games to play. One major draw to beach volleyball is that it’s a cheap, fun way to play in the sun; all you need is a ball! With a few basic skills, you have a workout that allows you to enjoy the sunshine and ocean. People who are well known in the beach volleyball community say that beach volleyball (as compared to indoor) is a more relaxed and challenging way to play the game. “The feel of the sand and the ocean air is the perfect atmosphere to just pass around a ball or play an intense match of two-ontwo,” said Sean Nicholson. They also enjoy the challenge that is added by the wind and resistance of the sand. Saddleback College student and volleyball player, Dani Van Liefde added, “Beach volleyball is one of my favorite summer activities. Do- ing a fun workout while getting a tan and getting to play with friends just adds to the experience.” If not conditioned to the sand, people often find themselves slower when moving toward the ball, and a large negative impact on their vertical. The wind also adds significant challenge. It has the power to work with or against you, forcing you to learn how to control the ball no matter the conditions. Many seasoned players are very particular about their courts. While there is no shortage of options, people have their favorites. Here’s a run down of some of the local hot spots: Doheny: Six courts and nets parallel to the water are set up and ready for action! Lots of families fill them during the summer, but pick up games almost always happen. newport: Make sure to bring your own net and set of lines! The poles are set, but the rest is up to you. Expect burning hot sand in the summer, with a longer distance between the courts and the water, but plenty of space to play in. huntington: Home of an AVP tour stop. There are plenty of courts, but parking is difficult and the beach is very busy. Victoria: Beautiful beach with courts at both ends. Parking is difficult and will require parallel parking and walking up hills. Ruled by a usual group of advanced players. Main Beach Laguna: Great for tourists looking to enjoy the ambiance of the small beach town with many shops. Due to Laguna’s popularity, it is difficult to grab court time as there are only three courts and hundreds of people.

SIDEOUT—when the receiving team scores a point so they can get the serve
