12 9 Feb. School Inspector Harking case against Fr. O 'Keeffe<br />
had to be withdrawn, as it had not been prepared. News new Bishops:<br />
O'Reilly for Liverpool; Vaughan for Sydney (Coadjutor); Fitzgerald for<br />
Waterford.<br />
14 23 Feb. Irish Bishops to meet re Gladstone's bill; he will<br />
not do much for Catholics.<br />
The National Board has abrogated the rule against<br />
which the Bishops protested.<br />
15 2 Mar. The Bishops have sent a petition to Parliament re<br />
Gladstone's bill. The Lord Lieutenant sent for Card. Cullen to try to win<br />
him over, but Cullen gave him "such a dose <strong>of</strong> truth as he never got before<br />
since he came to Ireland".<br />
16 5 Mar. The Liverpool Daily Post says Dr. Manning is to ask<br />
the Pope to make the Irish Bishops accept Gladstone's<br />
bill. Probably false.<br />
Lord O'Hagan favours the bill; he would lose his<br />
£4,000 a year job if Gladstone fell. Monsell would<br />
also lose his post.<br />
Proposed programme for National Synod <strong>of</strong> Bishops.<br />
17 10 Mar. Card. Cullen thinks Gladstone's bill is as bad as it<br />
could be. Some highly placed Catholics favour it. +Manning thinks it could<br />
be turned to good account. Day <strong>of</strong> Reparation in Dublin; great crowds.<br />
18 12 Mar. Gladstone's bill was defeated by three votes. Forty<br />
Irish M . P . ' s , normally followers <strong>of</strong> Gladstone, opposed him this time.<br />
19 24 Mar. Preparing for great Triduum in honour <strong>of</strong> the Sacred<br />
Heart.<br />
Fawcett's bill (to come on 2 Apr.) proposes to make<br />
T.C.D. godless.<br />

Protestants' day <strong>of</strong> prayer for conversion <strong>of</strong> Ireland from popery.<br />
22 Apr.? Hopes Kirby will be able to sell the vineyard.<br />
23 8 Apr. The Consecration (Kirby's suggestion) was tremendous<br />
throughout Ireland - probably a million Communions. Some recent blasphemous attacks on<br />
religion.<br />
24 10 Apr. Lord J. Russell has attacked Card. Cullen and defended O'Keeffe.<br />
