29 12 May Trial began today. Seven Catholics on jury. The two<br />

Romans came.<br />

30 26 May Judge Whiteside denies Cullen’s authority as Apostolic<br />

Delegate.<br />

31 28 May Whiteside forced jury to decide for O'Keeffe, but<br />

they assessed damages at one farthing. Whiteside then declared Card. Cullen<br />

liable for all O'Keeffe ’ s expenses, so the Cardinal had to apply for a new<br />

trial - perhaps in seven or eight months' time. The Roman canonists were<br />

excellent, and were impressed with the schools and religious institutions in<br />

Dublin.<br />

32 6 June A new judgment. Whiteside fought for O'Keeffe, but<br />

the other three judges resisted. Must wait till end <strong>of</strong> year. All think O'Keeffe<br />

is ruined.<br />

33 June Great celebration <strong>of</strong> Feast <strong>of</strong> S. Heart.<br />

O'Keeffe before a Parliamentary Commission in London re Callan schools.<br />

34 1 July Card. Cullen would like a Roman expert to teach Canon<br />

O'Keeffe's case against +Moran is due in Naas this<br />

month - before Judge Whiteside.<br />

collected. Orangemen stoned the returning trains.<br />

40 28 Aug. Clonliffe church coming on well.<br />

Expense <strong>of</strong> running College, with meat now a shilling a pound!<br />

41 8 Oct. William Cullen, who was seven years sick, can now resume his studies and<br />

be ordained. Fr, O'Keeffe tried to extract large sums <strong>of</strong> money from<br />

+Moran.
