a brunette it is exceedingly becoming, particularly if the sparkle in<br />

her eyes matches that of the gem. Even if a dull countenance be<br />

extinguished by flashing diamonds on neck or ears or hair, there may<br />

be a beautiful hand. Diamonds will lend charm to its color, call<br />

attention to its character, and there is no location which gives greater<br />

to the wearer.<br />

It seems a fact that the diamond responds to a deep human instinct<br />

for life and light, despite the flings at it from those who wish<br />

to appear the possessors of superior taste. A Swedish maid, who<br />

had lived with me ten years, and been a tower of strength in time of<br />

trouble, received in course of her stay, several rings a topaz, her<br />

birthstone; an amethyst, her guardian angel talisman; a carbuncle<br />

surrounded by pearls, an opal, a ruby doublet, and a diamond, the<br />

last a pure white dazzling gem of extraordinary fire, weighing a<br />

karat, and costing over $200. With these she went back to the old<br />

home in Sweden, where her relatives raved over the colored stones,<br />

particularly the topaz, the ruby doublet and the opal, but would have<br />

none of the diamond. They saw no beauty in it, and declined to believe<br />

it was valuable, though several New York jewelers had exclaimed<br />

at its exceptional quality and charm. And surely these good<br />

people, in the heart of a Scandinavian rural district, represent crude<br />

rather than cultivated taste.<br />

Diamond is the birthstone for April and the talismanic gem of<br />

the guardian angel for August. It expresses purity and innocence.<br />

Marbodus says :<br />

In magic rites employed, a potent charm,<br />

With force invincible it nerves the arm:<br />

Its power will chase far from the sleeping head<br />

The dream illusive and the goblin dread :<br />

Baffle the venom'd draught, fierce quarrels heal,<br />

Madness appease and stay the foeman's steel.<br />

As a protection from poison, the diamond was much used in the<br />

remote past, and also for the detection of infidelity. Placed under<br />

the head of one sleeping, it compelled the disclosure of violations<br />

the "first law of love."<br />
