<strong>Aflatox<strong>in</strong></strong> has also been l<strong>in</strong>ked to kwashiorkor, a disease caused by prote<strong>in</strong>energy<br />

malnutrition. Kwashiorkor has some characteristics associated with<br />

<strong>the</strong> pathological effects caused by aflatox<strong>in</strong> exposure <strong>in</strong> animals, but <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k<br />

between aflatox<strong>in</strong> exposure <strong>and</strong> kwashiorkor is not clear. 40 Despite <strong>the</strong>se<br />

prelim<strong>in</strong>ary f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> mechanisms by which aflatox<strong>in</strong> affects growth are<br />

currently unknown <strong>and</strong> require fur<strong>the</strong>r clarification. 41 <strong>the</strong> mortality rates from<br />

liver disease, which are high <strong>in</strong> Africa, especially <strong>in</strong> relation to prote<strong>in</strong>-energy<br />

malnutrition, are shown <strong>in</strong> figure 8. 42 <strong>the</strong> worldwide <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> liver disease,<br />
