documented effects on Poultry <strong>and</strong> Pigs<br />

Poultry is commonly considered highly susceptible to <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g aflatoxicosis. Different species are more susceptible than o<strong>the</strong>rs;<br />

turkey poults are <strong>the</strong> most sensitive, while chickens are <strong>the</strong> most resistant.<br />

<strong>Research</strong>ers studied <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong>-contam<strong>in</strong>ated feed on <strong>the</strong> growth<br />

<strong>of</strong> turkey poults. Birds receiv<strong>in</strong>g 100–1,000 ppb <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong> showed signs <strong>of</strong><br />

aflatoxicosis such as poor fea<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g, apathy, <strong>and</strong> pallor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>and</strong> beak.<br />

Some birds receiv<strong>in</strong>g 500–1,000 ppb experienced convulsive crises. higher<br />

levels <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong> toxicity corresponded to lower levels <strong>of</strong> feed <strong>in</strong>take, which<br />

resulted <strong>in</strong> lower weight ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> poults fed contam<strong>in</strong>ated feed. 38<br />

Studies show that chickens consum<strong>in</strong>g diets contam<strong>in</strong>ated with aflatox<strong>in</strong> show<br />

renal lesions, 39 lower growth performance, dim<strong>in</strong>ished immune performance,<br />

<strong>and</strong> lower survival rates than birds fed contam<strong>in</strong>ant-free diets. 40 Birds fed<br />

mycotox<strong>in</strong>-rich diets had also developed fewer antibodies than birds fed clean<br />

feed. Supplement<strong>in</strong>g potentially aflatox<strong>in</strong>-contam<strong>in</strong>ated feed with milk thistle<br />

has shown some positive effects <strong>in</strong> broiler chicks—possibly due to <strong>the</strong> ability<br />

<strong>of</strong> milk thistle to support <strong>the</strong> immune system though antioxidant, free-radical<br />

scaveng<strong>in</strong>g action that preserves <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r antioxidants <strong>in</strong> food, as<br />

well as o<strong>the</strong>r positive effects on <strong>the</strong> immune system. <strong>the</strong> addition <strong>of</strong> milk thistle<br />

<strong>in</strong>to contam<strong>in</strong>ated diets also showed a positive effect on weight ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> broiler<br />

chicks. 41<br />

Pigs are also highly susceptible to aflatox<strong>in</strong> poison<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>Aflatox<strong>in</strong></strong> has similar<br />

effects on sw<strong>in</strong>e as on poultry such as compromised immune system, poor<br />

weight ga<strong>in</strong>, reduced feed <strong>in</strong>take, <strong>and</strong> organ damage. Adverse effects have<br />

been shown both at both high <strong>and</strong> low doses; doses as low as 175 ppb—<strong>in</strong><br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ation with o<strong>the</strong>r contam<strong>in</strong>ants—have been shown to cause harden<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liver <strong>and</strong> damage to related vessels. clay additives have shown promise<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>hibit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation; however, fur<strong>the</strong>r research is<br />

required before wide-scale use is recommended. 42<br />
