Aflatoxicosis <strong>the</strong> poison<strong>in</strong>g that results from <strong>in</strong>gestion <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ated foods or feed. onset may be acute—<br />

due to a s<strong>in</strong>gle, or a few moderate to high doses <strong>of</strong><br />

aflatox<strong>in</strong>—or chronic—due to <strong>the</strong> long-term exposure<br />

to aflatox<strong>in</strong>-contam<strong>in</strong>ated foods or feed. Symptoms<br />

<strong>of</strong> acute aflatoxicosis may <strong>in</strong>clude abdom<strong>in</strong>al pa<strong>in</strong>,<br />

vomit<strong>in</strong>g, enlarged liver <strong>and</strong>/or liver damage, fever,<br />

hemorrhage, difficulty breath<strong>in</strong>g, poor digestion, or<br />

convulsions. chronic aflatoxicosis may result <strong>in</strong> liver<br />

damage, cirrhosis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liver, liver cancer, <strong>and</strong>/<br />

or growth <strong>and</strong> developmental delays <strong>in</strong> exposed<br />

children.<br />

<strong>Aflatox<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Aflatox<strong>in</strong></strong>s are highly carc<strong>in</strong>ogenic tox<strong>in</strong>s produced by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fungus Aspergillus flavus that are commonly found<br />

<strong>in</strong> soils <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fect gra<strong>in</strong>s, nuts, seeds <strong>and</strong> legumes.<br />

<strong>Aflatox<strong>in</strong></strong>s have a negative impact on health <strong>and</strong> have<br />

been associated with liver cancer, growth retardation<br />

<strong>and</strong> stunt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> children, suppression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> immune<br />

system, liver cancer—<strong>and</strong> more recently, l<strong>in</strong>ked with<br />

hiV <strong>and</strong> tuberculosis.<br />

Ammoniation Ammonia is diluted, applied to crops <strong>in</strong> a water vapor,<br />

<strong>and</strong> allowed to permeate <strong>the</strong> feed. <strong>the</strong> ammonia<br />

destroys fungus or mold growth <strong>and</strong> has a cleans<strong>in</strong>g<br />

effect on treated feed. Ammoniated feed is safe for<br />

animal consumption <strong>and</strong> can make feed more efficient<br />

when used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> short-term.<br />

Biocontrol A method <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>hibit<strong>in</strong>g pests by disrupt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ecological status <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local environment through <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> natural organisms such as parasites<br />

or pathogens. An example <strong>of</strong> this is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> a non-toxigenic stra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> A. flavus to displace <strong>the</strong><br />

toxigenic stra<strong>in</strong>.<br />

carc<strong>in</strong>ogen Any substance that is an agent directly <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> caus<strong>in</strong>g cancer due to its ability to damage or<br />

disrupt <strong>the</strong> cellular metabolic processes. carc<strong>in</strong>ogens<br />

may <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> cancer by alter<strong>in</strong>g cellular<br />

metabolism or damag<strong>in</strong>g DnA directly <strong>in</strong> cells, which<br />

<strong>in</strong>terferes with biological processes. <strong>the</strong> cell alteration<br />

<strong>in</strong>duces uncontrolled, malignant division, ultimately<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> tumors, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> DnA<br />

damage leads to <strong>the</strong> cell becom<strong>in</strong>g a cancer cell.<br />

cirrhosis A condition <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> liver slowly deteriorates <strong>and</strong><br />

malfunctions due to years <strong>of</strong> chronic <strong>in</strong>jury. it is a<br />

consequence <strong>of</strong> chronic liver disease characterized<br />

by replacement <strong>of</strong> liver tissue by fibrosis, scar tissue,<br />

<strong>and</strong> regenerative nodules (lumps that occur as a result<br />

<strong>of</strong> a process <strong>in</strong> which damaged tissue is regenerated),<br />
