<strong>of</strong>ficial regulations. <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong>ten buried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>and</strong> regulations <strong>of</strong> a<br />
country relat<strong>in</strong>g to trade or product st<strong>and</strong>ards. Key nontariff barriers can take<br />

• Subsidies, payments, or assistance to domestic producers <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />
can make domestic bus<strong>in</strong>esses more competitive as compared to foreign<br />
competition.<br />
• Emergency import protection to counteract sudden surges <strong>in</strong> imports<br />
that could damage <strong>the</strong> local economy can put foreign products at a<br />
disadvantage.<br />
• Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative barriers, such as unnecessary procedures with respect<br />
to customs <strong>in</strong>spections, can keep imports from enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> country.<br />
• Industrial <strong>and</strong> commercial practices, embargoes, or boycotts can<br />
destroy foreign bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />
• Technical barriers, such as safety st<strong>and</strong>ards, electrical st<strong>and</strong>ards,<br />
environmental st<strong>and</strong>ards, health st<strong>and</strong>ards, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r protective codes<br />
can drive up <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
• Practices such as social or cultural forces, monetary exchange controls,<br />
foreign government procurement policies, licens<strong>in</strong>g schemes, <strong>and</strong> even<br />
corruption can have negative consequences for trad<strong>in</strong>g partners.
