The Voice Bible reads like a story

‘The Voice’ is a new bible translation
that invites readers to step into
the story of Scripture.
This project, more than seven
years in the making, will finally be
available in South Africa in June.
Nearly 120 individual scholars,
musicians, artists, poets and authors
contributed to ‘The Voice’ translation,
creating a timeless narrative of
God’s Word.
“‘The Voice’ would have been
insurmountable if not for these Godinspired
individuals,” said Gary
Davidson, senior vice president
and group publisher for Thomas
Nelson’s Bible division. “They all
entered into God’s story with their
hearts, souls and minds to create a
translation that will truly live out the
Thomas Nelson mission, to inspire
the world.”

“What has been done with
‘The Voice’ is unlike any other Bible
translation available,” said Dr.
David Capes, lead scholar on the
project. “Making the Bible more
understandable and relevant for today’s
Christian, while maintaining
accuracy from the original Greek
and Hebrew biblical texts was a
challenge that we all hoped to overcome.
Everyone who worked on the
project had the same goal of creating
a translation to help share God’s
Word.”

Francois did it!
Francois Jacobs featured on the
cover of the February - May edition
of The Vessel as representative for
the SA National Council for the
Blind, slated to compete yet again
in this year’s gruelling Ironman
competition. On 22 April he managed
to complete this year’s demanding
challenge, sponsored by Spec-
Savers, at 22:18:25.
“We are so proud of Francois,
a blind athlete who completed
this gruelling event – showing the
world what blind people can do, and
raising funds for SANCB in the process.”
says Lindie van Zyl.
The South African National
Council for the Blind is quoted as
being “very proud of, and honoured
to be associated with Francois and
his guide, Kevin Willemse.”
Through many setbacks such as
falling ill during the second lap of
the running, and bad weather, Francois
still persisted, even if it meant
having to resort to walking. His perseverance
is proof that Francois is
truly an Ironman.
Francois’ impressive times this
year were 01:45:47 in swimming,
06:32:38 in cycling and 06:43:51 in
running. For his efforts at Ironman,
Francois managed to raise just under
R23,000 for the work of SANCB.
“The sea was really choppy and
the currents were making it difficult
for the swimmers to stay on course.
As Kevin and I were tethered, all I
had to do was to follow him and to
hope that he’s not going too far off
course,” said Francois. “I felt really
strong throughout the swim and I remember
thinking happy thoughts of
gratitude to everybody who helped
me get to this point.”
Francois added: “We started the
run without incident and I was able
to maintain a steady pace hovering
around nine kilometers per hour –
more or less what I’m capable of
maintaining over a long distance.

The spectators were awesome and
I felt bad that the writing somehow
came off Kevin’s number so very
few people were able to encourage
him by name. They made us feel like
we were busy breaking some world
record. It was indescribable!”
Reflecting back on when he
started to feel ill, Francois said:
“We weren’t even 10km into the
run when my stomach started telling
me I had been eating too much,
and that’s when the stops started.”
Although, he added that “such is the
miracle of Ironman, where the only
time you say ‘never’ is when you
say ‘never give up’.”

Rape runs rampant in SA

According to a new study by
the Medical Research Council, it
is estimated that every year half a
million rapes occur in South Africa.
Police estimate that only one in
every 36 rape cases are reported, and
of those only 15 percent culminate
in successful conviction.
The recent gang-rape of a 17 year
old mentally challenged girl is still
fresh in the collective minds of our
nation, and similar cases of brutal
rape, many times by children themselves,
are becoming increasingly
common.
An eight year old girl is in a serious
condition in hospital after allegedly
being raped and attacked by a
fifteen year old boy in Gingindlovu,
KZN. Similarly, two Soweto sisters
are also facing charges of raping a
Over the years, children with
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
or Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD) have been
described as hard to love, difficult
to teach and unpleasant to be with.
They have been regarded as problem
children causing much upheaval and
heartache – ending up belittled and
rejected by teachers, parents and
their classmates. It is no surprise
then that so many children with
ADD/ADHD grow up to be unhappy
adults with little confidence and
low self-esteem, not knowing how
to tackle their difficulties.
ADHD is a common behavioural
disorder that affects an estimated
eight to ten percent of schoolage
children in South Africa and
often continues through adolescence
to adulthood. Although everyone
knows about ADHD, few really
understand the condition, let alone
how to handle the challenges that
seventeen year old boy with mental
disabilities.
Child Welfare South Africa
(CWSA) strongly denounces this
widespread rate of rape, and is
deeply concerned with the ever
increasing occurrences of rampant
sexual violation of children, particularly
those with mental disabilities.
CWSA aims to eradicate all
forms of sexual violence in SA.
This is only possible through effective
partnership with parents in assisting
them to exercise their rights
and responsibility towards their
children and communities, by increasing
our vigilance and reporting
of cases.
Since child protection is a
core function of the CWSA, they
want to ensure that all year-long
programmes are implemented to
protect the innocent children of
our country. They are implementing
various programmes, such as
Isolabantwana, meaning ‘Eye on
the child’ which is a community
based child protection programme
that advocates the collaboration of
communities and formal resources
when protecting children against
abuse, neglect and exploitation.
They also have a community
based programme which seeks to
educate and enlighten communities
about various social problems
including sexual violence.
Their current focus is on reeducation
of values through peer
education, Girl Child and Boy
Child projects. CWSA’s Asibivikele
project focuses on HIV/AIDS and
engages communities to volunteer
and receive training to assist social
workers in the prevention and management
of child abuse.

provide support and information
to families, therapists, teachers and
caregivers interacting with ADHD
children and adults, as well as
counselling, guidance and referral
services.
ADHASA supports an eco-systematic
approach to ADHD which
examines the impact of the child or
adult with ADHD on the environment;
and the effect of the environment
on them. Thus, all aspects of
the child or adult’s life should be
considered and solutions found
for areas of difficulty. Using this
approach, ADHASA has over the
years improved the lives of many
people with, and affected by ADHD.
ADHASA continues to host educational
conferences that encourage
and assist parents and teachers to understand
their children affected by
ADD/ADHD and these have had a
positive effect on both parents and
children.
Two conferences were held in
the first half of this year with the
main topics of discussion being
ADHASA’s recommendation of
a healthy eating plan. This was
meant to assist parents with children
affected by ADD/ADHD, providing
them with a well-balanced
diet which is based on the Feingold
Diet. A second topic of importance
was to assist parents to create ADHD
friendly homes for children affected
by ADD/ADHD. Presenters at the
conferences included a nutritional
geneticist, a developmental paediatrician,
an occupational therapist, a
gests that children be aware of their
surroundings at all times and that
they never get into strangers’ cars.

MIA2012 is a large scale volunteer
and missions mobilization conference
with outreaches to be hosted
at Fountains Valley in Pretoria from
25-27 June.
Individuals, churches and organisations
from across the country
will gather at Fountains Valley in
Pretoria for a three-day missions
celebration.
The three-day gathering will be
a celebration of worship where participants
will receive training and
prepare for the outreaches. A number
of speakers will address a number
of topics such as cross-cultural understanding,
celebrating what God
is doing in Africa and the responsibility
of each generation.
Every team will receive training
on a choice of topics such as sport;
children’s ministry, health evangelism,
prayer, media, communication
and worship.
At the end of this three day conference
and gathering, the outreach
teams, with around ten delegates
each, will leave to serve at Entities
of Change (EoC’s) in 19 countries
south of the equator on the African
continent for outreaches that range

from four to nine days.
Each MIA2012 country will
have an embassy tent where each
participant will have to collect a
stamp and learn more about a specific

to ‘send’ the teams. Participants will
each have an opportunity to receive
a send-off stamp from one of the
pastors.

Kings Daughter of Excellence
recently arranged a love feast with
both former and current board
members. The purpose of this
occasion was to have fellowship
with each other and the Lord and to
observe the scripture in this regard.
A Love feast or fellowship meal
was a regular practise of the New
Testament church. They used to
meet together at each other’s houses
and have a time of fellowship over
a social meal. This is also part of
the Jewish culture which consists of
praying, sharing the Word, worship,
praise and fellowship.
Jude 12 tells us: “With their
shameless carousing they are
like dirty spots in your fellowship
meals. They take care only of them-

Fellowship is a time to do away

ambition. It is a time to strengthen
the bonds with each other and
with the Lord, so as to advance

Christ wants us as one.
Jesus also set this example with
the Lord’s Supper. This occasion
was not just a time for holy
communion. This event was preceded
or followed by a proper
meal. Jesus was also very reluctant
to send people away without giving
them food. Even if it meant taking
a young lad’s lunch box of fish and
few loaves of bread and turning it
into baskets upon baskets of food
for the multitudes that followed him.
It’s for these reasons that these
women of God met to express their
love to each other to their Lord. To
worship, praise and pray together
in unity.

Reverential speech
I was sitting in a coffee shop taking
a break from all and everything
that is demanding my attention. I had
to regain my focus and re-order my
thoughts after an intense morning.
Sometimes I just leave my office
to have some time out. I am sure you
do the same from time to time.
While waiting for my coffee to
arrive, I watched and listened to
everyone talking around me. In that
moment the Lord spoke to me about
the way we talk and communicate
to one another. I invite you to do
the same and start listening to how
we speak and engage each other in
speech.
Customers spoke rudely to the

waiter. Children interrupted the
conversation of parents and other
adults. Everyone was trying to make
them heard among the noise, with
cursing and foul language permeating
the airwaves around me.
What really caught my eye was
the many Christian jewellery and
tokens that was worn. There was an
abundance of necklaces with little
crosses made of gold, silver, wood
and many others. Wrist bands were
worn proudly with the well known
slogan WWJD (What would Jesus
do?) and ‘Jesus Loves You’.
In that moment the Lord showed
me how, by the way that we conduct
ourselves in speech, bear no testimony
to what we confess as Christians.
We expect the world to follow
Jesus but the question that arose in
me was: What do we portray?

fruit of our words.

We live in very challenging
times. Particularly in South Africa,
many are under a lot of strain.
Problems such as unemployment
due to the economic climate, the
alarming divorce rate and crime
are the realities of our daily lives.
Problems and frustrations know
no barrier. This is why we call them
common human calamities. My one
spiritual father says that they are
only wearing different camouflage.
There is one looking for marriage,
only because he is lonely. While
on the other hand, the man with a
spouse looks for an escape because
of marital problems.

Vier jaar gelede het Marie van

sy self net ’n skrale staatspensioen
ontvang. Met baie teenstand en op
haar hoë ouderdom, was sy nogtans
getrou om uit te loop op die water.
Twee jaar later, is sy egter oorlede.
Haar dogter, Elsa en skoonseun,
oud-pastoor Fanie Vosloo, was wel
vasberade om Huis Oase te laat

hy so min geweet het van die geestes
realm en baie dinge nie verstaan het

vrou beter verstaan en haar met meer
respek behandel.

Huis Oase serenade volstoom sedert 2008
Some turn to suicide. The death
of a prominent lawyer featured in
the media recently. He had financial
challenges and nobody knew about
it. Even his closest allies were in the
dark. He took his life.
In order to deal with life’s
frustrations we should again look
towards the word of God. We must
learn to be proactive, and to pray
for one another. Pray for yourself
first. The Bible tells us to love our
neighbours as we love ourselves.
Therefore start with yourself and
thereafter pray for your children.
Pray for your family, your friends,
and pray for both your political and
spiritual leaders.
The Bible enjoins us to pray for
our leaders so that we may enjoy
peace in our land. Our spiritual
leaders also need our prayers, who
carry a heavy spiritual burden.
Also, pray for the body of Christ,
the church.
A prerequisite to praying for
one another is to confess our sins to
one another. The Word encourages
openness between each other, for
us to confide in each other about
voortbestaan.

inwoners se waardigheid te behou

is daar ook ’n stap klub en word
daar saamgekuier op die grondpad.
Verjaarsdae is groot makietietyd.
As een verjaar, word daar vroeg die
oggend buite hulle kamervenster
ge‘serenade’.
Elke aand se huisgodsdiens
is ’n hoogtepunt, en lede van die
omliggende gemeenskap woon

by. Hoewel alle geriewe tot die
noodsaaklike beperk is, is Huis Oase
selfonderhoudend en elke inwoner
our challenges and weaknesses,
especially those sins that easily
beset us, so that we may be healed.
When you go to a psychologist,
you do all the talking. The more you
talk, the more you unload and that
brings healing to your soul. It is in
doing this that you ‘release’ yourself.
We as Christians need to be
each other’s therapists. Since we
often fall and make mistakes, we can
not allow ourselves to be judgmental.
When confessing our sins to
one another, it leads to prayer, and
prayer leads to healing. If we do this,
we will not have a sick church or
society. When we know each other’s
challenges we will take it to the Lord
in prayer and He will answer us.
The prayer of the righteous has
a powerful effect. One can only
be righteous because of the blood
of Jesus. When you give your life
to Him, He cleanses you and you
are declared the righteousness of
God. The Lord answers when the
righteous pray. Therefore, when we
pray, our lifestyles can count a lot.
That is why God sent Eliphaz and
his two friends to Job for prayer. Job
had the right standing with God and
he could ask God, and God could

Huis Oase het wel ’n bietjie
wins getoon, maar sal vinnig moet
inspring om ’n opbrengs te genereer
vóór die winter. “Die Here voorsien
altyd net betyds,” berig Fanie. Verder
sê hy dat ’n windpomp nou ernstig
op hulle gebedslys is. Hulle het
wel ’n werkende boorgat met volop
water vir hulle groentetuin, maar
elektrisiteit is onbekostigbaar.
Huis Oase is voorwaar ’n plek
waar aanvaarding, groei, restourasie
en diensbaarheid in hoop floreer.

his friends’ hands were not clean.
The Lord said that he is angry with
them because they lied to Him.
Unlike Job, they were not truthful.
God compared their lifestyles to that
of Job.
Sin creates a barrier between our
prayers and God. He cannot listen
if we come to him with dirty hands.
We read that: “if I ignored my sins,
the Lord would not have listened to
me”. (Psalm 66:18)
There are benefits in praying for
each other. In the same portion of
Scripture, the Bible says, “then, after
Job had prayed for his three friends,
the Lord made him prosperous
again and gave him twice as much
as he had had before”. (Job 42:10)
The secret to Job’s restoration
was prayer. We always talk about
God restoring, but we never consider
that there must be a need to pray for
others. So, you truly reap what you
sow, even in your closet.
May the angel of prosperity be
released to bring prosperity and
abundance to you as you begin to
pray for others in Jesus name.

Vroue ontdek die krag van eenvoud

“En hulle sal die ou puinhope
bou, die verwoeste plekke uit vroeër
dae weer oprig en die verwoeste
stede weer nuut maak wat woes was
van geslag tot geslag.” (Jesaja 61:4)
Dit was die tema by Lewende
Woord Brummeria, se onlangse
Vrouekamp, van hoe God gewone
vrouens gebruik om buitengewone
werke te doen in Suid-Afrika.
Vrydagaand het die Woord In
Aksie kampterrein, net buite Pretoria,
gewemel van vroue wat nesskrop
en hulself gereed maak vir ’n
naweek in God se teenwoordigheid.
Daar was ’n tasbare opgewondenheid
en afwagting onder die vrouens.
Met die innerlike versterk deur
tuisgemaakte boerekos, was almal
geestelik uitgehonger om te begin.
Van die eerste lof- en aanbiddingsklanke
af, het almal geweet dat daar
iets buitengewoons aan die kom was
vir die naweek.
Een van die dinge wat uitgestaan
maar sy handskrif kon ek
nooit nadoen nie. nog minder sy
handtekening. want dit was ‘n
netjiese kunswerk wat hy nooit
haastig aangepak het nie. nooit
nie. en ‘n lus vir die oog. soos
al sy potloodsketse en het hy
aan die dig geraak kon ek dit
nie ophou lees nie. dalk was die
menige potloodsketse sy gunsteling
tydverdryf. of was dit
dalk sy liefde vir rugby toe hy as
skeidsregter gereeld op sy pos
was.. wed-stryd na wedstryd.
nou hang sy fluitjie stil teen
my kombuismuur.
maar hoekom hy vir my meer
as een lieflingnaam gehad het
sal seker altyd ‘n raaisel bly. en
watter een sy eerste keuse was
sal ek ook nie kan sê nie. weet
net dat ek baie spesiaal gevoel
het elke keer as hy ‘pa se hotnot‛
nodig gehad het vir iets om mee
te help of wanneer ek iets goed
gedoen of reggekry het. en het
hy my ‘gatiep‛ genoem was ek
eers op my beste.
sy trapfiets vir die baie trap
werk toe was vir hom nie ‘n ‘hy‛
of ‘n ‘dit‛ nie. het altyd van ‘haar‛
gepraat. en in ‘n perfekte toestand..
al was sy al oud. en is
nooit met die handvatsels teen
‘n muur laat staan nie maar met
die saal. daarom dat ek haar
nooit omgeval sien lê het nie.
dalk is die gereelde toemaak
van die yskasdeur in my kombuis
die plek waar ek die meeste aan
het van die vrouekamp was dat al die
sprekers sonder kompromie gefokus
het op wat die Here wou doen.
Die egtheid en eenvoud waarmee
die bedieningsessies plaasgevind
het, het vrouens oop en ontvanklik
gemaak vir dit wat moes gebeur.
“Dit was ’n naweek waarin Jesus
die sentrale punt was en waarom alles
gedraai het,” het Marlene Steyn,
Vrouenetwerkleraar opgemerk.
Bekende sprekers by dié vrouekamp
was o.a. Carol Singleton,
Emma van der Walt, Luanne Etsebeth
en Henk Kleinschmidt.
Lewensveranderinge is duidelik
in die vrouens gesien. ’n Dame
wat vir 24 jaar met carpel tunnelsindroom
geleef het, is bonatuurlik
genees. Talle emosionele genesings
is ervaar onder die vrouens tydens
die kragtige werking van die Heilige
Gees. Die kamp is Sondagmiddag
afgesluit met ’n oproep aan die
vrouens, om hul roeping en funksie
volgens Jesaja 61:1-14 uit te leef.
Daardeur sal die harte van mense
pa dink. maak dit ook stadig en
met die grootste versigtigheid
toe. saggies. nes hy in 1951 dit
met ons 1952 elctro lux gedoen
het. die ynste een wat nou in
my buitekamer staan.. waarvan
die blink handvatsel en deurrubbers
steeds geen tekens van
ouderdom toon nie en waarvan
die liggie nogsteeds brand.
dat ‘n stukkie van sy regverdigheid
op my geval het weet
ek lankal. het nog altyd baie
selfvertrouend tot situasies
toegetree waar iemand onbillik
hanteer is. en eerlikheid was op
my voorkop geskryf. miskien onsigbaar
vir ander maar ek weet
dit is daar.. in sy eie handskrif.
van die dag af dat hy my badkamer
toe gestuur het oor die
albasterleuen wat ek hom vertel
het. soos altyd het hy op die
bad se rant gaan sit en baie koel
en bedaard gevra of ek geweet
het waarom die badkamer toe
ganery nodig was. waarop ek
huilend ja geantwoord het en
hy dan rustig gesit en wonder
het wat die gepaste straf sou
wees.. een of twee of drie. en
eers as ons saamgestem het oor
die straf kon ek buk. toe vir
drie van die bestes weens my
erkende albasterleuen.
ons het oor baie dinge van
die lewe gesels. oor die ander
geslag en hul andersheid ook. ‘n
andersheid waarvan ek vroeg
genoeg moet kennis neem. en
verkieslik van homself want pa
was daar en het geweet van al
daardie dinge. as hy my nie vertel
het nie sou ander dit gedoen
het. die vraag is net hoe en waarom
hulle dit sou doen. ek is bly
pa het dit self gedoen. baie bly.
maar daardie aand se saamstap
oor die kaal erf pinksterdiens
aangeraak kan word om sodoende
’n nasie te laat terugdraai na God.
Talle vrouens is opnuut gevul
met soveel dankbaarheid teenoor
die Koning van die konings, wat
weereens so getrou was.
“Suid Afrika het Jesus nodig en
ons as vrouens het ’n belangrike rol
om daarin te vervul. Ek sien met
groot verwagting uit na die volgende
kamp.” sê Marlene.

my kamer. op ‘n weeksmiddag
na skool. net voor drie.
ek wonder lankal nie meer
wie my eintlik vir die lewe voorberei
het nie. lankal nie. wonder
dikwels wel waar my totale
anders-heid as sendeling in ‘n
woestyn te perd vandaan sou
kom. en wie die skryfkuns in my
