Bullying is a major problem in
our schools. In 2012 several children
were violently killed after scuffles in
the classroom or during break. These
deaths shock us, but how often do
we think about the thousands more
children who are bullied every single
day? Children with ADHD are often
involved with bullying – as the bully
or as the victim. The Attention Deficit
and Hyperactivity Support Group
of Southern Africa (ADHASA) in
collaboration with the University of
the Witwatersrand School of Education
will explore and provide guidance

South Africa have felt the call to
plant new churches. Others have
wanted to do so for years but have
recognized the challenge of training
suitable leadership for the new
fellowships.
All around us there are com-
munities where the Gospel is urgently
needed and where churches
could be established. Often churches
or someone with a calling goes to
minister into those communities but
is faced with the problem of what to

Children who are bullied fear going
to school, as they worry about
the taunting, humiliation and pain
that they know lies ahead. The total
effect of bullying is often not recognised
with many children being
emotionally maimed for the rest of
their lives.
At the ADHASA 19th Annual
Teachers Conference, psychologist
and educationist Gerald Williamson
will be exploring the topic ‘Bullying
in Schools’. His exciting pre-
do with new converts.
One of the issues we
face has to do with our concept
of what a church is. For
many it is a building, for other
it means having a highly trained
pastor. Theological training is expensive
and often removes the
leader from the community for several
years. All of this is holding
the Gospel back. We need a practical
solution so that thousands of
new churches can be planted. Gateway
Theological Seminary might be
the answer for many.

they can create and implement a
whole-school anti-bullying policy.
He also advises how to address staff
training and development needs so
that they can deal with bullying and
crime confidently and effectively.

in their classrooms on a daily basis.
It is an opportunity to find out
about building children’s social and
emotional confidence, nutrition for
better brain function, as well as understanding
and preventing playground
upheaval.

and the Harvesters Bible School
have seen phenomenal growth over
the last decade and HIM has planted
over ten thousand new churches
across Africa where they train
pastors within walking distance
from their local church. After many
calls for this material to be available
in South Africa, Gateway was
established. The curriculum has
been modified to make it suitable
for online and distance study.
One needs to distinguish between
academic acceptance and
calling. For some, academic excellence
is their calling and the Church
needs them; but most local churches
require shepherds, not academics.

doctors, educational psychologists,
senior lecturers, teachers, occupational
therapists, and a clinical
dietician, all having knowledge and
expertise in various areas of learner
performance.

No story is without obstacles and early this year while the newspaper
spread its wings to new offices, our team’s faith were put to the test. With
few hours at our disposal for marketing, editing and layout, many obstacles
emerged before we succeeded in producing the newspaper that you now
hold in your hands. We serve a God who makes the impossible possible.
In this respect 2013 kicked off with a bang. The Vessel / Die Erdekruik
team had the opportunity to start the year with a two-day seminar on how
to manage one’s finances the Biblical way.

that it is becoming increasingly
important to make informed
decisions on how to minister to an
audience, especially in the rapidly
changing landscape of the current
Information Age. According to

Inserv, it is vital to have an understanding
of your target market and
the perception they have of the Gospel
of Jesus. “This will determine the
way in which you will minister to
them,” explains Botha.

Mankind seems unable to find the
balance between doing things simply

Before all cattle in his area would be
culled due to foot and mouth disease
and wholly unbeknown to him, Angus
had somehow ‘sensed’ the Lord
prompting him to sell his livestock.
People seem to have an uncanny
yearning of doing their own planning
and then asking God to rubberstamp
their ideas. The predicament
we all seem to face is that no matter
how hard we try, unforeseen disasters
still occur. Passengers and
cabin crew members who have
survived air disasters often testify
of some ‘premonition’ of danger.
Two stewardesses whom I had respectively
interviewed about different
air disasters they had survived,
attested to the hairs on their neck
inexplicably ‘standing up’ each fate-

in which they would interact with

Whenever the topic arises on
the theology of suffering and martyrdom,
I am reminded of the life of
Stephen the apostle. Not only was he
the first recorded believer who died
for Christ, but he showed a charac-
teristic that no person can ever express
without the help of the Holy
Spirit. So often we have this idealistic
view of Christianity; all should
go better the day we become a Christian.
In reality we should actually
prepare ourselves for a much harder
life as we are no longer only living
according to the fleshly desires, but
also entering the world of spiritual
reality.

suffering and martyrdom to cases
where religious freedoms are not
expressed and places where people
physically suffer, (and in many
cases die for what they believe,) the
question remains if that is truly the
only type of martyrdom. What about
martyrdom in countries where we
do have religious freedom? Is tradition
and comfort not also a way
that makes life difficult for those
who want to give it all for Christ?
They might not physically beat
you, or you might not physically die,
but surely the pressure can cause a
spiritual death, or slow the tempo of

van ’n lewende God, het sy nie
net terug gekry wat van haar gesteel
is nie, maar sy het ook ’n persoon
voorgestel aan die genade en vergifnis
van die Here.
Bradley was met haar twee
kinders in die proses om van Wonderboom
na Dorandia te verhuis
toe sy met ’n skok besef dat haar
skootrekenaar vermis is. Nadat sy
seker gemaak het dat die rekenaar
nie in die trek-proses agtergelaat
is of in die deurmekaar huis elders
versteek lê nie, het sy besef dat haar
slegste vermoede wel waar is; haar
skootrekenaar is gesteel.
“Ek het op my knieë soos ’n babatjie

‘alone’ actually means solitary;

a door in my mind. It stated the
verse with another angle: “What
came into existence was Life, and
the Life was Light to live by.”
Although God is both Light and
Love according to these scriptures
(Joh. 1:9; 4:13 and Eph. 2:16),
what came into existence was
‘Life’. Without Life, Light cannot
reveal anything worthwhile; without
higher forms of Life no reciprocal
expression of Love is possible. Light
stands against Darkness. It completely
eradicates Darkness and it
amplifies all that Light can reveal.
Especially, God’s Love for Man, is
portrayed in raw expressed open-
ness by His Light. Light triggered
Creation. No secrets about God-
Love for us can stay hidden where
God-Light invades; The whole purpose
of this God-Light and God-
We were created by God to
please Him - this is our natural
position. Serving and pleasing
God within a loving relationship
with Him is completely fulfilling
to each of us. He is the Perfect One,
someone we can completely trust
and rely upon.
God does not abandon anyone.
None of us are alone, even if our
physical bodies are sitting alone
in a vacant room. God is always
spiritually present for each of us,

spiritual beings, who cooperate to
please Him. This creates what we
refer to as community.
This verse is communicating
the creation of a spiritual community.
The idea of having a ‘helper’
in this verse is not that God left

substansafhanklikheid (voorheen

behandelingsentrum wat die
afgelope vyftig jaar spesialiseer in
die behandeling van dwelm-, alkohol-

Profetiese sleutels ontsluit die eindtyd

Die vraag
oor watter rol,
indien enige,
Israel speel met
betrekking tot
die vervulling
van profesië
oor die eindtye,
is een van die
belangrikste
sleutels rakende
die onderwerp
oor die wederkoms van Christus.
Talle gelowiges glo dat Israel
steeds God se uitverkore volk is.
Die gevolg is dat hulle baie van die
profesië in die Ou Testament wat dui
op die eindtydkerk sumier vertolk as
profesië oor die herstel van Israel.
Meer nog, probeer talle Christene
vandag teruggryp na sekere rituele
van Israel van ouds, wat alles net
skadubeelde was van die werklike
wat sou kom (Kol. 2:17; Heb. 8:5;
Heb. 10:1). Waarom wil ons besig
wees met die skaduwee van egte
dinge en nie met die egte dinge self
nie, werklikhede wat God met ’n
baie duur prys vir ons verkry het.
Daar is belangrike profesië in die
Ou Testament wat duidelik daarop
dui dat die verbond tussen God en
Israel nie vir altyd sal bestaan nie, en
dat daar ’n nuwe groep mense gaan
kom wat sal bestaan uit alle volke,
tale en nasies wie Jesus Christus as
Saligmaker sal aanneem. Na hierdie
groep mense word in die Nuwe
Testament verwys as die Kerk, die
bruid van Christus, die liggaam van
Christus waarvan Hy die hoof is, die
vrou van die Lam, die Nuwe Jerusalem
en Sion.
In die Ou Testament word daar
na Israel verwys as Die Volk, bedoelende
Israel, die biologiese afstammelinge
van Abraham. Ander nasies
en volke was nie deel van God se
volk nie. Na hulle was verwys as die
heidense nasies. Dit is belangrik om
te sien dat sekere profesië wat praat
van Sion, na die Nuwe Testamentiese
Kerk verwys.
Volgens die Bybelse Ensiklopedie
was daar aanvanklik net na die
vesting wat Dawid in Jerusalem ingeneem
het verwys as Sion (2 Sam.
5 en 7). Later het die betekenis van
die woord só uitgebrei dat dit ook
die benaming vir die stad Jerusalem
geword het (Ps. 51:20; 135:21;
147:12). Uiteindelik was na die inwoners
van Jerusalem as ‘Sion’ verwys
(Ps. 97:8; Sag. 9:9; Jes. 1:8).
Woorde soos Sion, Juda, Jerusalem
dui nie vanselfsprekend op aardse
stede of mense nie. Die inhoud van
die teks bepaal waarna dit verwys.
Selfs in die Nuwe Testament word
na die Kerk verwys as Jerusalem en
Sion: Galasiërs 4:26: “Maar Jerusalem
daarbo is vry; en dit is die
moeder van ons almal.” en Hebrieërs
12:22: “Maar julle het gekom by
die berg Sion en die stad van die
lewende God, die hemelse Jerusalem
en tien duisende engele.”
Die Jode is nie uitgesluit wat
die saligheid betref nie. Die enigste
manier hoe Israel deel kan wees
van hierdie groep gelowiges, is om
net soos die geval met die heidense
nasies, ook Jesus Christus as Saligmaker
te aanvaar. Die grootste onreg
wat aan die Jode gedoen kan word,
is om vir hulle te vertel dat hulle ’n
kans sal kry om Jesus Christus aan te
neem ná die wegraping. (Word vervolg).

veral onder die Kabyle groep is
sterk aan die groei. Die Kabyle is
’n Berber etniese groep van meer as
vyf miljoen mense wat veral in die
noorde van Algerië woonagtig is.
Geopende Deure ondersteun die Algeriese
Kerk deur hul te voorsien van
Bybels en Christenliteratuur, deur
opleiding te bied aan die leiers van
hul kerke en deur sosio-ekonomiese
hulp te verleen.
Die Evangelie word hoofsaaklik
deur middel van satelliet-televisie in
Algerië versprei. Selfs nie eers die
landswette wat die beoefening van

tennisbal. Vanjaar bevat die rugsakkie
ook die Bybelgenootskap se My
Eerste Bybel Doen en Leer Boek,
wat die projek besonderse diepte
gee. Dit is ’n leesboekie van dertig
bladsye wat kinders deur middel van
Bybelverhale blootstel aan letters,
syfers en woorde.

Gewoonlik gaan getuienisse oor
die ‘wow’ dinge, maar wat van die
getuienisse van lief hê, soos om
iemand by te staan tydens ’n
begrafnis? Die SMS’e, oproepe,
drukkies, kos neem vir die gesin,
en ’n skouer om die trane op te vang.
Wat van die getuienisse van
om die Woord geleer te word? Die
predikante, en dissipels van Jesus
wat die Woord van God bedien en
oop breek, sonder om terug te hou;
hulle tyd in studie en navorsing, sodat
ons die egtheid van die Woord
kan ontdek.
Sien ons die waarde in getuienisse
van gelowiges wat mediese
personeel is? Mense wat nie net
medisyne aanbied nie, maar ook
’n gebed en ’n bemoedigende
woord van aansporing. Christene
wat nie vra wat kan ek uit hierdie
hawelose, stukkende persoon
kry nie, maar eerder, wat kan ek
vir hom bied; hoe kan ek sy lewe
verryk soos Christus en Sy liggaam
mers wat tydens uitsendings uitgesaai
word skep ook ’n geleentheid
vir gehore om met die wyer Liggaam
van Christus in kontak te tree om
verdere bystand tot hul geloofsbesluit
te ontvang.
As gevolg van nuwe tegnologie
en nuwe maniere om mense met
die Woord van God te bereik, het

en verstaan hulle die boodskap. Dit

Mag u leer om die verhaal van
Jesus se glorie in u lewe te vertel,
ongeag die omstandighede. Ons
het altyd iets om oor te kan getuig.
Mag ons nie ons woorde mors met
mor en moan nie, maar mag ons dit
gebruik in geloof tot eer van God
wie so goed is vir ons.

Hadashah welcomes new learners

There were quite a few new faces
this year at Hadashah Learning Centre,
an Accelerated Christian Education
(ACE)-based school in Ladanna.
School principal, Ginny van der
Merwe and her personnel welcomed
each and every new learner with open
arms.
Since 2006, the school has grown
from strength to strength and this
year boasts 36 learners and six educators,
one of whom is a temporary
staff member.

Uit ’n behoefte om God se roepstem

tien jaar gelede van sy voltydse werk

is ds Theuns Voges in voltydse
bediening en sy getuienis spreek van
hoe die Here hom en sy gesin deur
die proses gedra het.
Ds Voges en sy vrou Rina, het
twee jaar gelede van Barberton na
Polokwane verhuis en is nou leraarspaar
by die Houtkruis Gemeenskapskerk.
“Teen die einde van 1999 het ek
my werk by die spoorweg verlaat om
in 2000 teologie te begin studeer. Ek
het op skool geglo ek is deur die Here
geroep, maar ek wou nie ’n prediker
word nie. Ek het egter besluit dit was
tyd om dié pad te volg. Ek het by
Unisa geregistreer en saam met my
dogters weer begin studeer,” sê ds
Voges. “Dit was ’n groot uitdaging
vir ons om deur te kom sonder Theuns

gepraat en hulle gesê om hom soos
’n stukkie goud op te pas. Dit het my
baie aangeraak,” het hy gesê. “Dié
beroep het baie uitdagings, maar ons
is geroep om dié werk te doen en ons
doen dit tot die beste van ons vermoë.
Ons wil die gemeenskap vertel om
terug te draai na God. Beleef weer sy
vreugde en onthou dat dit ’n vreugde
is om ’n Christen te wees,” sê Rina.

God is love. Not only does He act
lovingly, but He is the very essence
of divine love. The attributes of this
divine love is manifold and too numerous
to mention in a small space.
Just as with holiness and humility,
love has its origin in our inner
man. (John 7:38-39). The glory
of God was seen in the way Jesus
loved all men. He valued man and He
delighted in every human soul and
longed to set man free that was deceived
and bound by Satan. He never
despised anyone who was poor,
ignorant or ugly. He was willing to
pay the ultimate price to free man.
He knew that people needed to
be loved and material things to be
used, but because of the influence of
sin the order is now being reversed.
Things are loved and people are
used for one’s own ends.
Jesus had encouraging words for
the downtrodden and those defeated
in life’s battles.

A strong passion for the Kingdom
of God to be established and to see
people becoming mission minded is
on the agenda for Living in Hope
Missions. “It is important for each
person to know what God has called
them to do in life,” says Living In
Hope Missions’ Jaco Struwig. Jaco
and his wife, Ilke feels strongly that
the calling the Lord has laid on their

Jaco. The Struwigs will be planting
an English speaking church in Antananarivo,

Across the earth the groaning
of creation will continue as man
continues in his passion for greed,
growth and progress. A lull will
begin in many areas and in nations
of the earth as a sense of peace and
calm begins to emerge. Be cautious,
however as this is also the quiet before

God intervenes after air crash

After a tragic air crash claiming
the lives of a missionary couple, a
community in Africa is devastated.
But God is faithful and the story
that unfolds bears testimony of the
Lord’s grace and provision.
On 2 June 2012 the young dr
Jay Erickson and his wife Katrina
tragically died when the Chitokoloki
Mission Hospital’s Cessna 206
medical rescue aircraft that Jay was
piloting, crashed into the Zambezi
River. Lives in the northwest province
in Zambia where this mission
is situated, depend on the availability
of both a serviceable plane and
pilot, and the tragedy left this mission
in shambles.
During this challenging time,
Gordon and Ruth Hanna, who have
served at the mission since 1985,
provides testimony of how the Lord
provided and intervened.
Gordon writes in an e-mail: “This
is to make you aware of another of
God’s miracles. Since the plane went
down, our faith has been put to the
test. After the initial shock we have
had a long search for a replacement
plane. There have been some very
good opportunities, but due to the
fact that the insurance has never
come through with payment, we have
not been able to proceed.”
On 28 December I received an
urgent email that Roy Graham,
grandson of Billy Graham, was trying
to get hold of us.
Roy and several others from
Samaritan’s Purse (SP) and World
Medical Mission have helped us
with medical work in the past.
They were aware of the plane crash.
One of the plane’s belonging to SP
became available, a Cessna 206,
still in excellent condition. It was in
Kenya, but had been shipped back
to the USA. Roy’s father, Franklin
Graham, who now heads up the
Billy Graham Association said that
he thinks the plane should go back
to Africa to Chitokoloki.
They have agreed to outfit the
plane, add any equipment, including
a pod, storm scope and any
avionics we want and then ship it
back to us. They have also agreed to
send a team to assemble it in Zambia
and cover all costs.
I guess I should not have been,
but I was speechless, and again saw
evidence that God is in control.
He truly never fails and is always
there for us.
Spirit Word’s prophecy for 2013
It’s the year of the overflow; All the good will grow and grow.
Evil and bad will fall away; They will not stay another day.

The anointing is going to increase, And the power that follows will just

take you along, To make you powerful and to make you strong.
As the wind of God starts to blow –
And takes you in 2013 into the overflow – Give and sow like never
before, And see the overflow from the heavenly store.
