Laas Vrydag, 19 Oktober, het die wind verwoesting 

gesaai in Carolina omgewing. Hier 

in die dorp het ons gesien hoe die lug pikswart 

toetrek en dit het skielik koud geword. Die 

wind het opgesteek van die noorde se kant af en 

met volle mag en mening aan alles geruk wat 

los en vas was. In die dorp was daar genoeg 

stof om die sig te beperk, maar sover het ons 

nog geen berigte van skade gekry nie. Buite die 

dorp op die Wonderfonteinpad het twee van die 

verkeersafdeling se groot kennisgewingsborde 

plat op die grond gewaai. Meer rigting Hendrina, 

het die wind weer verwoesting aangerig.

By Steynsdraai Farm het verskeie bome mors afgebreek en ander

dele van die stoor afgeruk en weggewaai. Die dak is gebreek, die 

staalstruktuur is gebreek, die totale skade beloop om en by R100 

000. Soos ons verneem is daar op die Chrissiesmeerpad ook skade 

aangerig sodat dakke en plafonne moes vervang het. Verder noord 

na Leliefontein is daar ook vermelding van skade.

STORMSKADE IN DIE OOSKAAP 

Ons kan dink dat die wind lelike skade aangerig hier in 

Carolina maar ons het onderstaande foto’s ontvang van 

die Ooskaap se vloed en stormskade. Dit is in Uitenhage, 

Port Elizabeth en op die N2 hoofweg. Dele van die teerpad 

hieronder is totaal weggespoel. Dis ondinkbaar dat 

soveel water in so kort tydjie kan neerslaan.Karre het oorals 

vasgesit in die water tot halfpad deurhoogte, mense het met 

rubberbootjies in die strate rondgevaar, dit is algehele chaos. 

Dele van die omgewing is tot rampgebied verklaar. Dit is 

sover nog onbekend hoeveel mense verdrink het.

Duke Nukem Forever: 

The Doctor Who Cloned Me 

Taking place right after the explosive finale of Duke Nukem 

Forever, The Doctor Who Cloned me is a new single player 

campaign that once again puts you in the boots of Earths 

greatest ass kicker. The game opens with Duke finding himself 

strapped down in Area 51, which has been taken over by 

his old nemesis, Dr. Proton. With an army of his own clones 

to deal with as well as murderous androids and of course the 

alien menace, Duke has his work cut out for him. 

Duke Nukem Forever might not have lived up to all expectations 

but it was an enjoyable enough experience for the most 

part. If you are one of the people that derived no entertainment 

from the game then you might as well give this DLC 

a miss as well. It is simply a new 4-5 hour campaign that 

continues the adventures of Duke in a few new locations. The 

action is a bit more intense and progress a bit smoother but 

it’s still the same engine that got so many people riled up. 

Apart from the new Terminator style robots and two brand 

new bosses, the enemies are pretty much the same. You’ll be 

facing clone Dukes as well but these are all taken from the 

multi-player models. There are two new weapons t try out 

however. The Expander bloats your enemies making them 

more vulnerable and even popping them with successive 

hits while the Pregnator is simply those creepy goo shooting 

aliens being wielded as a weapon. Dylan, the foul mouthed 

EDF sidekick of the main campaign also makes a comeback 

but is a bit more useful this time round. For certain sections 

you can sit back and let the opposing enemies battle each 

other but as always it’s more fun to go in guns blazing. 


CT GAMING 

REVIEWS 

The DLC has a bit of a slow start and I was dismayed to see 

more platform jumping sections. Things pick up once you 

encounter your clones and these guys also provide some of 

the most humorous sections in the campaign. The parodies 

and humor is definitely a bit more up to date than the main 

campaign was. While it’s mostly shooting there are two new 

vehicles sections as well but fortunately they do not drag on. 

Escaping Area 51 in a school bus and racing around on the 

moon with a buggy is actually fun. There is a RC car section 

as well for a shrunken Duke to navigate but it’s definitely shall 

we say, less macho this time round. 

If you managed to look past the shortcomings of Duke Nukem 

Forever and enjoy the game then The Doctor Who Cloned 

Me should provide a few more hours of entertainment. It still 

falls down flat in a few areas but was engrossing enough for 

me to complete in one sitting. There are also a few new Steam 

Achievements thrown in for you to beat. This will likely be the 

last addition to the game before we can start looking forward 

to something brand new so enjoy it for what it is.

What a month this has been. I don’t 

know if it is only me or even you have 

noticed that this month went faster 

than a fighter jet. I guess that is just 

how things are. There are too many 

things that are keeping us busy and 

glued To our newspapers and televisions. 

In south Africa, the talk of the 

town has been about the trucks and 

mine strikes that have been going on for 

quite a while. Even the Olympics spirit 

disappeared like nothing, such that it is 

as if we had them 10 months ago. We 

can complain and think that there is no 

future for this country, but I still say that 

South Africa is a wonderful country. If 

you really take time to watch the international 

news, you will realise that the 

whole world is indeed in turmoil. The 

strikes are not only here in Mzansi, they 

are in most parts of the world. Just think 

of the multitudes of innocent people 

who got killed in Syria. The bombings 

around the world, religious threats, e.tc. 

Sometimes I sit alone and wonder what 

would this world be like in the next ten 

years or so. With this in mind, I want 

to come back to your life today. How 

are things in your world as you read this 

article? Is your own personal life full

that we need to deal with our troubles.

Goeie middag jy. Dis middag wanneer

my verhaal. 

Daar is so baie dinge wat rondom ons 

gebeur. Hierdie week het mense weer 

groot skade gely met die wind en 

vloede in die kaap. Dan skud ek net 

my kop in afgryse terwyl ek lekker 

binne in my veilige huisie hoog en 

droog sit terwyl die wind daarbuite koud aan ander se klere gryp. Een

Begin van hierdie week het ek nou regtig geskrik.Ek het vir geruime tyd 

die weegskaal vermy en toe ek nou lekker voel op Sondagoggend toe raak 

nou heeltemal oormoedig en klim op die ongemanierde ding. Sal die stuk 

elektroniese gemors my nou werklik vertel ek weeg 90.2 kg! Dis glad nie 

volgens ons afspraak nie. Weer eens het ek myself ernstig aangespreek. Ek 

is besig om gewig te verloor!! En gelukkig na 3 dae se strawwe onthouding 

van alle suiker en ander koolhidrate is ek weer 2 kilo af. Maar dit moet 

vir ons almal ‘n vaste patroon bly. Kry jou teikengewig en hou daarby. 

Gaan jy oor ‘n sekere maksimum, wees dan kwaai met jouself en belowe 

dat jy onmiddellik weer truggaan na jou plan. Ek sien dat multivitamine 

absoluut help om ontydige lus vir lekkergoed te keer. Ek gebruik DS24 

wat 24 verskillende soorte vitamine bevat en dit is noodsaaklik. Anders kry 

jou liggaam ‘n onbeheerde lus vir kos totdat die nodige vitamines aangevul 

is. Verder water drink is ook my swakste gewoonte. Ek vergeet eenvoudig 

om water saam te neem werk toe, maar glo my, dit help om jou liggaam se 

totale metabolisme aan die gang te hou. 

Goed, hoe moet ons nou verder eet? Volg die riglyne van die program

EEN DAG IN DIE LEWE VAN MAPSTIEKS

My my baas is ‘n baie besondere man. 

Hy kan sommer hier op die plaas koers 

vat na nêrens toe. Mapstieks gaan jy 

saam? sê hy dan. 

O ja, altyd, waar gaan ons baas? 

Diekant toe. 

Dan stap die baas diekant toe en halfpad 

verander hy van koers as die wêreld 

moeilik word om te loop vir hom. Hy 

worrie nie oor my want ek loop 4x4 

en klim maklik by enige miershoop uit 

waar hy moet om loop. Maar hy spring 

weer oor slote waar ek moet deur loop. 

En as daar water in die sloot is dan word 

my pens nat! 

Dan skielik staan hy stil, wag tot tannie 

Tombie en ek hier langs hom staan en 

maak ‘n foto van niks. 

Ek sien niks van hier waar ek staan nie. 

Die gras groei bokant my kop. Maar 

die baas sien sy skaduwee daar aan die 

oorkant van die sloot en tannie Tombi 

s’n ook. Myne? Grrrr, kyk mooi of jy 

my skaduwee daar tussen die gras se 

skaduwee kan sien, maar ek sien niks. 

Grrr. 

Daai skaduwee ding is baie snaaks. Dit 

loop ook altyd agter jou aan soos jou 

stert. Dit sit ook aan jou vas soos jou 

stert en dit groei soos die son sak. En 

as jy wegloop van die son, dan loop 

jou skaduwee voor jou uit. Maar dit bly 

altyd op die grond. Ekt al opgespring 

van die grond af maar my skaduwee het 

net daar gebly! 

Toe besluit ek dat ek tog maar regtig 

moet leer om op my agterbene te loop 

soos die baas. Die baas sê as ek goed 

oefen dan sal ek my balans vind. Hiert 

jy, laat jy my nou skrik, moenie so 

skielik op my afkom terwyl ek besig 

is om my balans te soek nie! Ek soek 

dit oorals maar kry dit nie. Hoe ruik 

balans? 

Sien, nou is ek ook mooi groot. Ek kan 

die baas amper ins sy broeksak kyk. Hy 

bêre soms sweets daarso. 

Ga weg Mapstieks, wat vroetel jy daar? 

Dit wat jy ruik is lankal daar uit. Niks 

vir jou daar jong, jy dink verniet jy is 

groot, maar jy is nie baie groter as die 

bal nie. 

Watter bal baas? Waar bal baas? 

Daai een wat Nelleke altyd mee netbal 

gespeel het tot Pluto hom gehap het. 

Oom Pluto was die anner Great Dane 

hond wat die baas gehad het. Pluto het 

9 jaar oud en ‘n bietjie geword maar 

toe was dit te veel vir hom. Hy het 

probleme gekry met sy smeerkannetjie. 

Daai een wat hy altyd die wiele van die 

karre mee gesmeer het. Iewers het die 

spul daar binne opgepak en toe werk 

dit nie meer nie. Die baas moes hom 

laat uitsit. Siestog. Dit was voor my en 

tannie Tombi se tyd. Maar tannie Daisy 

het my alles vertel. Die baas het glo dae 

lank gesit in sy stoel en so veeeeeer weg 

gekyk. Niks gehoor of gesien nie. Net 

gekyk. 

Maar nou van ons weer hier is kyk die 

baas weer nader. 

Waar is daai bal baas? Laat ek hom rol! 

Pas maar op dat die bal jou nie rol nie 

Mapstieks! 

Whatever! Gee, dat ons sien 

wie rol vir wie. Whoa! Dis 

‘n oom bal die! Ekt gedink 

dis daai gewone balletjie 

ding wat die mense so met ‘n 

vliëplakkie of so iets heen en 

weer slaan oor die draad, 

maar hierdie een moet 

mens behoorlik met twee 

pote vasvat! Goeie genade. 

Is baas seker die ding is 

veilig vir ons? 

Ag Mapstieks, bedaar, die 

ou balletjie kan jou niks 

doen nie. Dit kan net jou 

kant toe rol en as jy uit die 

pad spring dan rol dit net 

verby. 

En as iets in my pad staan 

sodat ek nie uit die pad kan spring 

nie? 

Dan rol die bal bo oor jou tot hy nie 

meer kan nie sien? 

En toe skop die baas met sy 

linkerpoot die bal so magtig na my kant 

toe dat ek nie tyd kry om te koes nie. Ek 

spring soos die duwweltjie uit die boksie 

na links, die bal slaan agter teen die 

muur vas en kom weer trug!! Dit het die 

baas my nooit vertel nie. En voordat ek 

kan woef sê is die bal hier oor my neus, 

oor my ore af my rug af op die grond. 

Grote griesels, dis glad nie gaaf nie 

baas, die ding het ‘n wil van sy eie! 

Oorals waar hy stamp vat hy weer ‘n 

ander koers en stop is daar nie by hom 

nie! 

O ja, kyk net Mapstieks... 

Die baas tel sy voet op en terwyl die bal 

netjies onder sy voet rol sit hy sy groot 

voet bo op die bal. Pfffff hoor ek. 

Sien? Nou lê hy stil. 

Ek sou ook so pffff gemaak het en stil 

gelê het as die baas sy groot poot bo op 

my gesit het. Wag maar, ek en suster kat 

gaan daai bal nog speel! 

So van kat gepraat, Hitler was 6 weke 

weggewees. Ons het heerlike rus gehad. 

Toe hy terugkom was die klagtelys 

baie lank. Hy was met niks tevrede in 

die huis nie. Die sondagaand loop die 

baas dwars deur die huis om die katte te 

soek maar hulle is weg. Maar die baas 

maak al die deure toe dat hulle nie in die 

middel van die nag loop skrou en mou 

deur die huis nie. Dit was muisstil in die 

huis. Maandag ook. Maar dinsdag toe 

sê die baas: Mapstieks het jy suster kat 

gesien? Nee baas, maar ek hoor haar in 

die spaarkamer. O gonna, toe maak die 

baas die spaarkamer oop en hier kom 

die twee uitgestorm. Reguit kosbak toe. 

Toe begin die gesang weer. Ek het die 

baas gewaarsku, los die deur liewers 

toe! Maar nee, arme katte.... Wat wou, 

mou mou hulle kan muise vang die 

simpel goed.

Middelburg Residents Take a Stand Against Electricity Tariff Hikes

devastating domino effect

Businesses and residents 

were suddenly forced to 

pay almost double for their 

electricity, forcing them to 

cut back severely on all other 

expenses, which reduced and 

forced some business owners 

to cut back on staff or to 

close down. 

The DA is also highly concerned 

of the effect the increases 

will have on schools 

in the area, especially no-fee 

schools – who cannot charge 

school fees to cover their 

expenses. In fact, it is very 

likely that electricity supply 

will be cut in the near 

future, as the Department of 

Education simply does not 

have the additional funds for 

increased subsidies. 

With no viable plans to attract 

investment and creating 

jobs, the municipality has 

opted to milk consumers for 

every cent they have. The 

current economic climate is 

making this practise more 

and more unsustainable, as 

taxpayers simply do not have 

the wherewithal to continue 

carrying this burden, and will 

soon reach breaking point. 

The electricity tariffs as 

implemented by the Steve 

Tshwete Local Municipality, 

are simply unaffordable.

Victory for Farmers as 

Court Fines Mine 

FARMERS frustrated by 

waiting for Mineral Resources 

Minister Susan Shabangu 

to take action against mines 

contravening environmental 

laws won their first victory 

when a court imposed the 

largest penalty on a mining 

company in a criminal prosecution 

for environmental 

violations. 

Ms Shabangu last year issued 

713 notices to mines 

not complying with their 

environmental management 

plans and promised that her 

department would close 

down “some of what are 

now illegal operations”, but 

nothing appears to have been 

done. 

An Ermelo, Mpumalanga 

magistrate on Wednesday 

convicted Golfview Mining 

of two contraventions of 

the National Environmental 

Management Act and one of 

the National Water Act. The 

company was fined R1m, 

conditionally suspended for 

five years. The conviction 

and sentencing was by plea 

agreement and conditional on 

Golfview paying R1m each 

to the Mpumalanga tourism 

and environment department, 

the province’s parks board 

and the Water Research 

Commission. 

Centre for Environmental 

Rights director Melissa 

Fourie said on Thursday 

that the conviction, sentence 

and additional order were 

“groundbreaking”. 

Ms Fourie said that JSElisted 

mining company Coal 

of Africa had paid a bigger 

fine for its environmental 

transgressions, but it was the 

result of administrative, not 

criminal, action.

Protection Group, representing 

Mpumalanga farmers, 

laid the charges against

It came to a point where we 

couldn’t get the Department

Water Affairs) did something, 

but nothing concrete

said on Thursday that 

the department’s legal 

division would need to 

study the plea agreement 

before commenting. 

In terms of the plea 

agreement, charges 

were withdrawn against 

Golfview director Albrecht 

Frick and employees 

Robert Pryde and 

Sonita Kruger. But Frick 

was convicted of contraventions 

of the National 

EnvironmentalManagement 

Act 

and the 

Mineral 

and Petroleum Resources 

Development Act and fined 

R260,000 in April this year 

in connection with another 

company he ran, Anker Coal 

& Mineral Holdings. 

Despite Frick’s earlier conviction, 

Golfview was treated 

as a first offender. It was 

fined for mining in a wetland; 

diverting the Holbankspruit 

River and a tributary ; 

inadequate onsite pollution 

control and evaporation 

dams; failing to separate 

dirty water from clean water 

; and constructing a washing 

bay on a downslope to the 

Holbankspruit River. 

The company had also 

dumped rocks in the river; 

constructed offices within 

the 10-year flood line; built 

canals; and “transformed” 

3ha of indigenous vegetation. 

The April conviction marked 

the first time a mining 

company and a director have 

been convicted in South Africa 

of contravening environmental 

laws. 

Several similar criminal 

charges are being investigated.

Kleinpiet’s Dilemma 

“You could have told me it was only 

a herd of antelope,” Precilla fixes 

Kleinpiet with an accusing stare, “and 

stopped me from worrying so much. 

Anything could have happened out 

there.” 

Kleinpiet doesn’t know whether he 

must feel guilty or proud. Sure, he did 

leave in a rush; but he thought she was 

sleeping soundly. Then again: if she 

worries about him that means she does 

care. It’s a comforting thought. 

“I’m sorry. I really thought you 

were sleeping and didn’t want to 

disturb you…” 

“That’s why you blew away half 

your ammunition to scare the living 

daylights out of me and poor 

Jock? That’s clever, Kleinpiet. 

Real clever.” 

Some people react like that if 

they get a fright. The scare triggers 

an Angry Button somewhere 

in the brain and unleashes the 

pent-up emotions. It’s a healthy 

reaction to the scaree, but hugely 

uncomfortable for the scarer. 

Kleinpiet shuffles his feet and 

mumbles he’s sorry. He cuts such 

a pathetic figure that the Angry 

Button flips to ‘off’ and the 

Laughing Circuit activates. 

“But I did appreciate Jock’s presense, 

I can tell you. He’s really 

a lovable dog – saw that I was 

scared and upset and simply kept 

me company. Sometimes that’s 

all a girl needs. That, and a good 

lock on the front door. This openhouse 

situation doesn’t work for 

me.” 

Ten minutes later Kleinpiet 

makes a piece of wood fit into 

the hooks he screwed into the 

door. “See: a real old-fashioned 

bolt. Now nobody can come in.” 

Precilla isn’t impressed. “So how 

do you lock – or unlock – it from 

the outside? Say you’re going to 

town or something. This contraption 

only works from the inside;

Kleinpiet sighs. That door hasn’t been 

locked since the house was built by his 

grandfather. 

“The times have changed, Kleinpiet,” 

using a softer tone, she tries to make 

him understand. “In your grandfather’s 

time crime was rare. They still hanged 

rapists and murderers – and let’s not 

debate that one, either. Nowadays about 

10% of criminals get caught, and only a 

fraction of them end up in jail. Dockets 

get lost, lawyers probe into the cracks 

of the fine detail of laws, and some laws 

are even so badly written, it’s a joke. 

Not so long ago they found a child molester 

guilty of abuse, but then the court 

suddenly realised that the law was well 

written – but there was no punishment 

stipulated. The message to the masses 

is clear: go ahead and plunder. Even 

if you get caught, the chances are that 

the prosecuting authority will slip up 

somewhere and you’ll go free.

Gekombineerde Skool Hendrina het 

op ‘n sonnige Vrydag van die graad 

12’s afskeid 

geneem op ‘n 

baie tradisionele 

manier – eie aan 

Hendrina. Daar 

is hokkie en 

netbal gespeel, 

en natuurlik 

afgesluit met die 

rugbywedstryd. 

Die matrieks 

konnie die mas 

opkom teen die 

onnies en die res 

van die skool op 

die netbalbaan 

nie, maar die 

onnies het beslis die slegste gelyk met 

al die beserings en ‘war paint’. Op die 

hokkie veld het die onnies die matrieks 

geklop – met hulp van julle jonger ‘alter 

ego’s”. 

Die rammetjies het die groot graad 12 

manne aangevat op die rugbyveld en 

gewen met drie drieë teen een. Baie 

geluk aan die mannetjies wat so mooi 

gespeel het. Die res het die matrieks 

aangevat op die rugbyveld in ‘n heftige 

kragmeting. SelfsAlwyn Burger het ‘n 

draai kom maak en gewys dat hy niks 

van sy rugby vaardighede verloor het 

nie. 

Na die rugbywedstryd is die graad 11 

leiers op die gewone manier ingelyf as 

leiers van die Gekombineerde Skool 

Hendrina – ons verwelkom elkeen van 

julle! 



SAVF ONS EIE OUETEHUIS, CAROLINA HOU BASAAR 


Op Vrydag, 28 September 2012, het die jaarlikse basaar van die Ouetehuis in Carolina 

weer afgeskop. Vroegoggend was daar al ‘n gewoel en gewerskaf om alles in 

gereed heid te kry vir al die besoekers wat met sakke vol geld hier iets te kope gaan 

kom soek. Die atmosfeer was gelaai met opgewondenheid. 

Die verrigtinge is geopen met skriflesing en gebed, deur die Hervormde Kerk se 

Prediker, Ds Susan Oosthuizen. Die N G Kerk was verantwoordelik vir die koektafel, 

en het van die mooiste en heerlikste gebak verkoop. Die Hervormde Kerk het 

die smaaklikste kerrie en rys verkoop en was ook verantwoordelik vir die Groente 

en Vrugte tafel. Die Gereformeerde Kerk het die heerlikste nageregte verkoop, A P 

Kerk het met die mooiste geblomde voorskote die aandag getrek terwyl hulle pannekoek 

gebak het, AGS Kerk het al die monde laat water met die reuk van braaivleis, 

die Tuinbouklub het blomme en plante verkoop, die Helpmekaar Mienie diens se teetuin 

was ‘n lafenis vir die dorstige, en hulle het van Ria se heerlike sjokoladekoek en 

melktert saam met die tee bedien. Die SAVF Bestuur was verantwoordelik vir die 

vleistafel, wat gekreun het onder die heelikste snitte vars vleis. Die reuk van die Ouetehuis 

se heerlike vetkoeke het van vroeg af al in die lug gehang. Die Tombola tafel 

was propvol van allerhande interessante items. As jy by die voordeur inkom, het 

tannie Ena se kindertafel menige klein hartjies verbly met al die kleurvolle lekkernye 

wat te koop aangebied is. Die boekwurms kon hulle verlusting in die boektafel, waar 

boeke baie goedkoop te koop aangebied was.

Die tema hierdiejaar was “Lente Vrolikheid”, en al die tafels was 

versier volgens die tema. Daar was ‘n kompetisie vir die beste 

uitbeelding van die tema. ‘n Modeparade is gehou, en onafhanklike 

beoordelaars het kleurvolle uitrustings beoordeel. Pryse is 

uitgegee aan verskeie persone wat die tema van “Lente Vrolikheid” 

baie mooi uitgebeeld het. Die tafel wat die sertifikaat 

ontvang het vir die beste uitbeelding van die tema, was die N G 

Kerk. Van die Ouetehuis personeel het die kindertjies, en ook 

die grootmense, vermaak as twee voëlverskrikkers. Die voëlverskrikkers 

het die dorp ingevaar, en ieder en elk moes geld in die 

blikkies gooi, om van hulle ontslae te raak! 

Plaaslike kunstenaars het gesorg vir die musiek en pragtige kitaarspel. 

Die SAVF Bestuur, Personeel en Inwoners wil aan almal 

wat betrokke was met hierdie fondsinsamelingsfunksie, wat ons 

ondersteun het, en wat skenkings en bydraes gemaak het, baie, 

baie hartlik bedank vir hul deelname om hierdie funksie so ‘n 

groot sukses te kon maak. Ons waardeer u almal. U bydrae en 

teenwoordigheid het die grootste aandeel gehad in die sukses van 

die Basaar.
