Glossy Black Ceramics
with Decorative Flavor
Modern Georgian ceramics takes its roots in ancient traditions, preservation, promotion
and future development of which should be the goal of any local artist.
In this article, we would like to tell you about the activities of Duruji Mineral Ltd.
(general director Mr. Alexi Rozomashvili) and Georgian Artist Ltd., represented by its
manager Ms. Manana Arabuli.
Key driving principle of Duruji Mineral is preservation and restoration of traditional
Georgian glossy black ceramics technique and development / promotion of modern
artistic and construction ceramics. In cooperation with Georgian Artist Ltd., Duruji
Mineral developed a project intended to support utilization of inert masses found in
the bed of Duruji river, which will foster solving of environmental issues and importantly
contribute to restoration of traditional glossy black ceramics technique. As a
result of laboratory studies this product was found to have unique features, enabling
production of construction materials (brick, tiles, blocks) as well as decorative articles,
accessories and ceramic tiles. This very material was used for finishing works
in a single-family house located in Saguramo village (project designed by architect
Nika Gogava).

Manana Arabuli graduated from the ceramics department of design faculty of
Tbilisi State Academy of Art; she is regular participant of international exhibitions and
competitions and author of original works, stored at the Museum of Georgian Artists’
Union, Modern Art Center and private collections in Georgia, Brazil, Austria, Argentina,
Italy, Spain, Germany, UK and Holland.
Ceramics created by Manana Arabuli are original and beautiful. Synthesis of line,
color and form helps her endow her designs with the delicate breath of spirituality,
to share her innermost thoughts through art and make it live along with the unique
coloring, shape and decoration, distinguishing traditional Georgian ceramics from its
foreign counterparts.

important goals.
