Remember to Dance... 

With the soccer, the colour, the splendour of the 

World Cup as well as all the up-beat songs now 

only part of our memories, one can ask in the words 

of one of the writers “Will we remember this as a 

time to dance? Or a time rather gone by” We trust 

that you had a chance to dance over the past two 

months and that the advent of spring will again pose 

an opportunity to embrace life. Whilst spring signals 

in new life in nature, it is also a sign of year-end 

exams nearing and in August a special month for all 

the woman in Midrand Estates. A special word of 

appreciation to the grandmothers at the retirement 

village and for each and every resident – may you 

sing and dance in spring 2010! 

Winter in 2010 was blomtyd. 

Die woorde “Veni, vidi, vici” wat beteken “ek het 

gearriveer, ek het gekyk, ek het verower” word aan 

Julius Ceaser toegedig en is klaarblyklik geuiter na 

‘n kortstondige geveg wat tot nog ‘n oorwinning 

gelei het. Dr Carel Kriek haal die woorde aan in ‘n 

onlangse skool nuusbrief om die Spaanse sokkerspan 

se opmars te beskryf na die wêreldbeker. 

Ons weet dus wat Ceaser gedoen het – die vraag 

is egter wat elkeen van ons gedoen het in die buitengwone 

tyd wat gekenmerk is deur sokker, helder 

kleure en vele liedjies. Ons vertrou elke inwoner 

het geblom in die aksievolle winter en dat die tyd 

iets was wat almal vir lank wil onthou. In hierdie 

uitgawe stel ons graag ons lesers bekend aan die 

nuwe gemeenskap in ons midde; tewete die inwoners 

in die aftreeoord. Laastens wens ons dat 

al die vroue in Midrand Estates spesiaal sal voel op 

vrouedag en wens ons hulle ‘n tyd toe wat vervul is 

met vrede en vreugde.

Midstream in the top 3 suburbs in South Africa 

In a review completed by the SA Property Transfer Guide, the Midrand Estates development 

has recently been confi rmed as one of the top suburbs in terms of property successfully sold. 

The SAPTG monitors the transfers that take place at the Deeds Offi ce to determine suburb 

development trends and found that the Midstream extensions (which include Midstream, Midfi 

eld and Midlands) ranked third in the number of transfers affected at the Deeds Offi ce over 

a 6 month period from 1 August 2009. In terms of total money value and average value per 

transaction, Midstream outranked all other suburbs in South Africa during that period.

In evaluating the information in the table above, the following should be considered: 

1. With the 110 recently completed retirement village units still to be included in the review, 

it may be expected that the ranking for the Midstream extensions in the review will remain 

high throughout 2010; 

2. The review includes both full title and sectional title properties, but excludes sales where 

purchase price is less than R100 000 or greater than R15 million; 

3. The review also includes undeveloped stands; 

4. Over the same period MES connected 106 newly completed houses to the electrical reticulation, 

confi rming that approximately 50 of the sales were undeveloped properties. 

Full circle – Three billion year old rock fi nds a new home in Midfi eld. 

A Midfi eld resident, Tjaart van der Walt recently contacted us with the story behind his granite 

kitchen tops. The tops will be made from the boulders excavated from his stand! 

Tjaart says that when they purchased their stand in Midfi eld 

they saw the outcrops, but initially, did not fi nd them intimidating. 

The decision was made to remove the rocks 

by excavating around them – it was at this stage that 

they realised that what could be seen from the top was 

just the tip of the iceberg. In their efforts to determine 

the exact rock type, they stumbled upon Hennie Schwartz 

from Granite Junction in Brits. Hennie was kind enough 

to drive all the way from Brits to investigate further and 

confi rmed that the rock was granite of a very high quality. 

Tjaart also consulted the South African Geological Society 

and determined more specifi cally that the rock could be 

described as Archean granite of the Halway House Formation 

and could be as old as three billion years. 

With new respect for the basic “rock”, the decision was 

taken not to blast the boulders into smaller pieces and 

cart it away but rather to investigate the possibility of 

removing some of the boulders intact and have them reworked 

into kitchen tops in their future house. The three 

billion year old rock will thus complete a full circle moving 

from below surface to add the fi nishing touch in a modern 

home – a remarkable story of old meeting new!

Soos wat ‘n metronoom die tyd aftik, so het die mid-jaar datum sedert die jaar 2003 telkens ‘n 

groot gebeurtenis rondom Midrand Estates aangekondig. 

Midstream HEV 

Konstruksie op die terrein begin volstoom vroeg 

in 2003 en mid-jaar 2003 word daar die eerste 

keer bult-af gery op ‘n teerpad en die eerste 

fase word geproklameer, met die Midstream Estate 

HEV wat as eerste Huiseienaarsvereniging 

gestig word. Teen mid-jaar 2004 woon daar reeds 

10 families in Midstream en word daar begin 

met die konstruksie van Midstream College se 

Pre-Primêre skool. Tik-tak, tik-tak kom mid-jaar 2005 nader waartydens Brakfonteinweg verleng 

word tot by die Windsorhek-sirkel en die konstruksie van Midstream College begin in alle erns - 

Midstream se ontwikkeling word voltooi met die proklamasie van uitbreiding 11.

Voltooide eenheid by Aftreeoord 

Teen mid-jaar 2006 neem die konstruksie van die hoërskool 

in aanvang en Brakfonteinweg word verleng tot 

by die sirkel voor Midfi eld - die eerste huise in Midfi 

eld word word ook voltooi. Mid-jaar 2007 trek die 

duisendste (1000e) familie in Midrand Estates in hul 

huis en word daar gestalte gegee aan die gholfbaan, 

die krieketovaal en die “klubhuis” en die teerpad word 

verleng tot kort voor Midlands terwyl die eerste huis 

in Midlands voltooing nader. Teen mid-jaar 2008 spog 

Midrand Estates met sy eie winkelsentrum en open die 

eerste kerk, Doxa Deo, hul deure, met die planne vir 

die Hervormde Kerk (of Familiekerk) en Metodiste kerk 

ver gevorder. Die einde van 2008 ondervind die metronoom 

‘n geringe versteuring met die oorspoel van 

die gevolge van die een van die grootste resessies in 

menslike heugenis. 

Nieteenstaande die stadiger tempo van die metronoom 

vind mid-jaar 2009 die dorp in goeie gees en berei 

die skool se eerste matrieks hul voor vir hul eindeksamen. 

Terwyl die twee duisendste (2000e) huis voltooing 

nader, word daar in alle erns voorberei vir mid-jaar 

2010! Die tempo neem weer toe en word uitbasuin op 

‘n plastiek vuvuzela-trompet en almal trek hul vere 

reg in ‘n yskoue winter vir die wêreldbeker, rugby in 

Soweto en ... die verwelkoming van ‘n heeltemaal nuwe gemeenskap 

in Midrand Estates – tewete die eerste intrekkers in 

die aftreeoord. Vind gerus hierbo die tydsgleuf waartydens u 

deel geword het van die dorp se opwindende geskiedenis en 

maak seker u is deel van die toekoms, want soos die statistiek 

van eiendomsoordragte bevestig (sien elders in die tydskrif) 

het Midrand Estates homself in ‘n kort tydjie gevestig as een 

van die mees gesogde woonareas in Suid-Afi ka. Ons verwelkom 

graag alle nuwe inwoners met ‘n rustige tik-tak en wens 

hulle voorspoed toe in “ons dorp”.

News from the HOA / Nuus van die HEV 

Feedback eedback on security for first six months of 2010. 

With the year reaching its mid-year mark, 

we can refl ect on a virtually spotless record 

over the past six months.. In order 

to discuss security and related matters we 

receive feedback from the security co-ordination 

meeting which is held on a monthly 

basis. The meeting is attended by the 

security management personnel from the 

Midstream, Midfi eld and Midlands HOA’s as 

well as by a number of residents from the 

estates. (Note: Whilst attendance at the 

meeting is open to all residents, participants 

have to complete an induction course 

on the current procedures and systems prior 

to the fi rst meeting attended) 

Key issues reported: 

• Two incidences were reported for 

the six months. The fi rst concerned 

a theft which took place in the Hutton 

area where it is suspected that 

a resident’s guests stole a lap top 

and wallet from the house and then 

disappeared. In a second incident 

in Midfi eld, without any evidence 

pointing to a break-in, a safe with 

contents was removed from a resident’s 

house. Both incidents were 

reported to the SA Police; 

The approximately 250 attendees were introduced 

by the HOA board to the composition 

of the HOA statutes and the motivation 

for the board’s suggestion that the current 

statutes be substituted with a revised set. 

The board explained that the motivation 

lay in giving effect to the completion of the 

estate development phase by providing an 

accurate description of the properties that 

form part of the HOA. In addition all references 

made to the development period and 

associated rights the developer might still 

have in the Midstream HOA area of jurisdiction 

needed to be removed from the General 

items. It was confi rmed that the matter 

has been discussed beforehand with the 

estate developer, Bondev, and that Bondev 

• All persons entering Midfi eld have 

been re-registered on the bio-metric 

system to “clean” the database 

of redundant information and speed 

up the recognition process; 

• The Hutton gate biometric system 

has been refurbished with the installation 

of a new software system 

and new bio-metric readers. Once 

the system has been stabilised the 

up-grade is expected to be introduced 

at the Old Kent and Windsor 

gates; 

• A special sub- committee is investigating 

alternative measures and 

procedures for visitor enrolment, 

specifi cally aimed at reducing the 

current exorbitant telephone bills; 

• A shelter for the guards at the towers 

has been completed; 

• The security system at Retire@Midstream 

HOA has come into effect 

and representatives from the new 

HOA will join in the general security 

activities. 

On n 20 July’10 the Midstream Estate HOA held a special meeting. 

supported the HOA board in drafting the 

revised statutes. The special resolution to 

introduce the revised statutes was adopted 

with an overwhelming majority. 

The meeting furthermore dealt with: 

• The HOA budget and levy for 

2010/11; 

• Consideration of the introduction of 

a debit order system –which was 

voted against; 

• Feed back on the emergency service; 

• Feed back on regional roads.

out buildings forming part of the 

streetscape should be regularly maintained 

and painted where necessary. 

The motivation and application 

The landscaping and development of sidewalks 

has a direct inpact on the aesthetical 

quality and appearance of the area involved. 

Guiding rules to manage sidewalks 

have therefore been formulated over a period 

of time. Planting should be planned 

(and planted) so as not to interfere with 

pedestrian traffi c or obscure the vision of

without interfering with municipal services 

installed on the sidewalk. Furthermore the 

stand owner has an obligation to maintain 

the sidewalk.

It’s time to plan your summer garden 

For your lawn: 

Prepare your lawn for spring:- 

1. scarify your lawn to remove thatch 

build-up; and 

2. aerate the soil with a spiked roller 

or heavy duty fork for air, fertilisers 

and water to reach the grassroots 

more effectively. 

• Start fertilising lawn with superphosphate 

according to manufacturer’s 

specifi cation to stimulate root growth; 

immediately water the lawn generously. 

• Top dressing will be necessary to fi ll 

hollows and level uneven areas. Remember 

bunch-type lawns must not be 

top dressed. 

• Start watering the lawn thoroughly. 

Freezing news from the Weather Vane 

A lot of money has to be spent in order to maintain 

the interior temperature of your house at 

a comfortable level in the winter. The term 

HDD (Heat Degree Day) is used to describe 

the degree by which the ambient temperature 

must be raised to reach a pre-determined base 

level – our local weather station uses the common 

base temperature of 18.3°C (65°F). For 

example, a HDD of 10 will indicate an average 

temperature of 8.3°C – that is, 10 degrees below 

the comfort base level of 18.3°C. 

Over the periods 15 to 24 June’10 and 12 to 16 

July’10 exceptionally cold weather was experienced 

with a record minimum value recorded 

at our local weather station (Note: recorded 

since 2004). The new record for a minimum 

temperature was -3.1°C. This was recorded 

at 5:55am on Thursday, 17 June’10, on which 

morning the temperature dipped below 0°C at 

1:20 and stayed there until 8:15 – the occur-

All visitors to South Africa will agree that our fl ag must be the easiest to recognise and most co- 

lourful fl ag in the world. No other fl ag comes close in design or 

in the kaleidoscope of colours assembled on the cloth we call our 

national fl ag. Furthermore it is just as beautiful when worn as a 

shirt or a dress and creates a dramatic impression when used in 

face painting. 

The recent World Cup not only gave 

us the chance to display our fl ag to 

a world wide audience, but also gave 

us the opportunity to carry pictures 

from South Africa into the lounges of 

more than a billion viewers. The pic- 

tures carried images of a colourful 

people from an aptly named rain- 

bow nation. All of this was topped 

by the incredible show preceding 

the fi nal match when the projec- 

tion of colours reached a fi tting 

crescendo. 

Many locals became avid soc- 

cer supporters, blew their vuvu- 

zelas with vigour, and followed 

the month long competition 

with excitement. It was a 

gripping tournament that 

saw the fi rst goal scored 

by our own Siphiwe Tsha- 

bala. Thereafter we followed 

the seemingly unstoppable 

march of the German team, 

the fl air of the Brazillians, the 

tenacity of the Orange team 

from Netherlands and then 

fi nally – the precision of the 

team from Spain. In the end 

the colour that mattered most 

was the gold on the World Cup 

covered in the red and yellow of 

the Victors – Spain. It was truly 

a waka-waka month!

Miriam Pringle-Rapea is a Midstream resident who partici- 

pated in the recent World Cup as a volunteer for the 

fi 1 st ever “Football for Hope Festival run in partnership with 

FIFA. The focus of the mini-tournament (run concur- 

rently with the main competition) was on young kids from 33 countries across the globe, and was 

aimed at ensuring that young children receive a proper education. Miriam reported that the young 

kids’ hunger for education and a better life was awe-inspiring as was the way in which they found 

solace from their hardships through the game of Soccer. The pledge by Heads of States, actors, 

sports people and ordinary folk, was to deliver a better education to 75 million children across the 

globe. Miriam is hopeful that she will be able to participate as an international volunteer in the 2014 

competition in Brazil an

consumers during their announcement on 24 February 2010 of the approved 

ESKOM rates. The new tariff structure was named an “inclining block tariff” 

structure (or “IBTs”) and was aimed at delivering electricity at a reduced tariff to small consumers, 

with a gradual increase in the rate per unit as the monthly consumption increases. With 

MES bound to the ESKOM rates, the ESKOM IBT-rates were introduced by MES whilst eagerly 

awaiting the rates of the surrounding Metros. 

The surrounding Metropolitan areas (Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg) introduced their 

new municipal rates from 1 July’10. No information could be obtained on the rates for Jhb, but 

both Tshwane and Ekurhuleni recently published their new rates on the web and is summarised 

below.

Moving house is always an effort and it goes handin-hand 

with throwing older things away, unpacking

van News@7 op die planke te bring. Nuushoogtepunte uit die onlangse 

verlede en die geskiedenis is geneem en verwerk tot ‘n produksie wat 

bestaan uit ‘n spesiale nuusuitsending met ‘n allegaartjie van moderne 

musiek en goue oues. News@7 se beoogde opvoerdatum is einde Oktober.

Midstream College het vanjaar onderskeidelik 

die 0/9A, 0/10B; 0/11A en B; 0/13B en C 

spanne se ligas gewen. Die 0/9A en 0/11A het 

Midstream College verteenwoordig by die 

Blou Bulle uitspele en die 0/11A het ongelukkig 

in die semi-fi nale vasgeval en die 0/9A het 

naelskraap in die fi naal verloor. Baie geluk aan 

beide hierdie spanne met hulle prestasies. 

Midstream College het hierdie jaar weer ‘n 0/12 Distrikspan speler, Drikus Greyling opgelewer.

Derby’s maak wintersport gewild 

Midstream College se wintersporthorisonne is in 2010 verbreed met 

opwindende bepalings en derby’s wat vanjaar gerealiseer het. Nuwe 

vriende is gemaak en klipharde wedstryde was aan die orde van die 

dag. 

Die seisoen het afgeskop met die nuwe vriendskapreeks tussen Midstream 

College, Hoërskole Uitsig, Akasia, Birchleigh, Hendrik Verwoerd 

en Willlowridge High. Tydens hierdie geleentheid het meer 

as 1500 leerders hul op die rugby- en hokkievelde, netbalbane en 

agter die skaakborde uitgeleef. Die seisoen het na die Aprilvakansie 

se toere behoorlik op dreef gekom met ‘n weeklange derby teen 

Sutherland High School. 

Tussen die derby’s deur het ons ook kragte gemeet teen spanne van 

Waterkloof, EG Jansen en St Andrews. Die Midstreamers het ook St 

Peters College in Sunninghill op hulle junior fees gepak en het ons 

eerste spanne het ook by Cornwall Hill se hul staal gewys. Die seisoen 

is afgesluit met ons eerste derby tuis teen ons bure, Cornwall 

Hill. 

Heelparty van ons leerders het aan die onderskeie sportsoorte se 

provinsiale proewe deelgeneem. 

Die kroon van die wintersportprogram is gespan met die aanwys van 

Gontse Ditshego vir die O/16 Gauteng Netbalspan om aan die SAtoernooi 

in Augustus deel te neem asook Sene Mlkwanazi wat vir die 

O/18 Noord Gauteng hokkiespan gekies is om aan die interprovinsiale 

toernooi deel te neem.

In support of the needy in our 

community, the College has 

taken part in a number of outreach 

projects over the last 

couple of years. This year the 

College, in collaborati on with 

Gift of the Givers, took part 

in the Jacaranda 94.2 Winter 

Warmer project. This project 

required each school to collect 

as many blankets as pos- 

sible during the month of May.

College collected more than 2 200 blankets and these were handed over 

to the radio stati on.

Midstream celebrates the Soccer 

Langasems bou voort op marathon tradisie 

Midstream College held a funfilled 

sports day on the 9th of 

June 2010 when an early kick-off 

for the 2010 Soccer World Cup 

was celebrated. The Midstream College diski 

dancers kicked off the proceedings and therafter 

a knock out soccer tournament, arranged by 

the prefects and Midstream Council, was staged. 

The day was filled with lots of fun, soccer enthusiasts 

and super fans representing the teams 

participating at the World Cup. The overall winners 

were awarded with vuvuzelas, soccer tshirts, 

water bottles and hamburgers. 

Op 7 Junie het Midstream College die vierde Midstream Mini-marathon aangebied. ‘n Afstand van 5 km is deur Midfields 

Estates aangedurf met 164 seuns en 149 meisies wat die wedloop binne die afsnytye voltooi het. 

Die trofeë vir die junior afdeling is deur Anneri Greyling 

en Thabiso Ramalope gewen . Mandi Grobbelaar en Ian 

Stanton het die senior afdeling se trofeë ingepalm. 

Afrikaans-week en onderwysers laat leerders skater 

Die jaarlikse Afrikaans-week van Midstream College het vanaf 4 - 6 Mei plaasgevind. Hoewel opvoedkundig, is verskeie 

speletjies in die klasse gespeel en is ‘n paar kreatiewe leerders met sjokolade beloon. Die nuwe Afrikaanse film, Jakhalsdans, 

is onder die leerders bekendgestel en tydens Woensdagoggend, 5 Mei, se graadopgeninge het Shawn Marx (grd 12), 

LG du Plooy en Raymond Briedenhann (grd 11), Monique Newman (grd 10), Annerine Niemand (grd 9) en Anneri Greyling 

(grd 8) fliekkaartjies losgeslaan. 

Op Donderdagaand, 5 Mei, het die onderwysers die leerders met ‘n konsert vermaak. Hulle het gedans, toneel gespeel 

op Afrikaanse liedjies wat die almal laat skater het. Met al die onderwysers as deel van die laaste item wat op die vehoog 

inmasjeer, het Mnr Leonard Swart vir Dr Carel Kriek, skoolhoof, met ‘n seerowerpakkie aan, in sy skip (‘n Spar-trollie) ingestoot 

terwyl daar gesing en gedans is op ‘Kaptein’. 

Na die konsert het die leerders vir ‘n wyle gekuier en gesokkie.

Telecoms – an extensive relay race 

Connecting a telephone call between two people, or sending and receiving an e-mail message, is 

similar to an extended relay race. In a relay race it is important to ensure you have as many fast 

runners in your team as possible and that they can pass the baton reliably and quickly. A telephone 

call is similar in that it is connected to a number of networks owned by a number of institutions 

and in most instances the connecting service is provided by yet another set of institutions. 

The fi bre optic network in Midrand Estates 

In a similar vein high-quality telecoms rely on dependable and fast networks with reliable and 

quick interconnections. The entire Midrand Estates boasts a fi bre optic network that is the best 

network type currently available as far as reliability and data transmission speed is concerned. 

In addition a fi bre optic cable has been commissioned during 2010 between Midrand Estates and 

the main service providers, thus providing points of interconnect at lightning fast speeds to these 

main service providers – ie Telkom, Neotel, Vodacom,etc. The network within Midrand Estates is 

owned by Bondev through their subsidiary eTUBE. The network is being rented out to service 

providers who provide the local point of interconnect to main national service providers in order to 

relay a telephone call or e-mail message. Connection to the network is voluntary and only available 

to residents within the estate. 

GTS as the current service provider of telecommunication services 

GTS is the company currently responsible for managing the local fi bre optic network and the provision 

of connectivity to the national service providers. GTS has recently been liquidated, but the 

joint liquidators have undertaken to continue with the provision of the telecommunication services 

for the time being. Bondev in turn has advised that they remain fully committed to the continued 

installation of fi bre optic networks to new developments, as well as the appointment of a service 

provider that will manage the local interconnect of telecommunication services at acceptable levels. 

Why one should consider connecting to the fi bre optic network? 

Connection to the network is voluntary and is made through a contract with the service provider. 

However, irrespective of the service provider, the following will remain a constant: 

1. One can phone internationally at very low rates on a carrier grade telephone service (not 

Skype or similar products). For instance, phone fi xed line users in central areas of the USA, 

Europe and Australia at below 50c per minute; 

2. One can get high-quality bandwidth at competitive rates. The combined buying power of the 

greater Midrand Estates provides a more competitive arena than single buyers. This has already 

been confi rmed through the fi bre optic cables installed by external parties to provide 

connectivity to Midrand Estates; 

3. One can get telephone calls within Midrand Estates for free! All calls between Midrand Estates 

residents across the network are free of charge! 

4. One can share in the information from the community web site and local services to servers 

situated in Midrand Estates at breakneck speed. 

In conclusion…. 

Bondev’s vision is to provide top quality telecommunication services in Midrand Estates at the 

best possible rates. The network is in place and secured through eTUBE’s (Bondev’s) ownership 

thereof, irrespective of the GTS liquidation. Telecom services will continue in the interim through 

an arrangement with the liquidator whilst the provision of services over the longer term will be 

maintained through a follow-up agreement.

Die jaar het ons vorige president, Nelson Mandela – of Madiba 

soos hy deur almal gedoop is, ‘n volle 92 jaar oud geword. In 

2009 het die pleidooi ontstaan dat mense op sy verjaarsdag 

67minute se goeie dade uitvoer om so Madiba se 67jaar in 

publieke diens na te boots. So het Koos en Drinie van Rensburg 

en twee van hul kleinkinders hul deel gedoen die jaar 

deur vir 67 minute rommel te verwyder van die stroom wat deur Midstream 

gaan. Die foto wys Koos tesame met Amelie en Ivan van der Ploeg met hul 

sakke vol rommel – almal sê aan hulle: “Goed gedoen en baie dankie ook 

aan die jong klomp!”
