Flu has killed
1,100:WHO
The World Health Organization
said yesterday that 1,154swine
flu victims emerged in April.
More than 300 of the new deaths
were in the Americas , bringing the
death toll in that region to 1,008
since the virus first emerged in
Mexico and the United States and
developed into the global epidemic.
WHO also said there is no evidence
that a new H1N1 virus is
mutating into a more dangerous
form, but that six patients
have been found with a virus
resistant to Tamiflu, the most
commonly used swine flu drug.
Laboratory confirmed cases of the
disease have reached 162,380, but
WHO said this number understates
the total caseload because hardhit
countries are no longer testing
all the people with flu symptoms.
La organización mundial de la
salud dijo ayer esas víctimas de
gripa 1,154swine surgidas en
abril. Más de 300 de las nuevas
muertes estuvieron en las Américas,
trayendo el número de víctimas
en esa región a 1.008 desde el
virus primero surgidos en México
y Estados Unidos y se convertido
en la epidemia global. QUIEN
también dijo que no hay evidencia
que un nuevo virus H1N1 muta
en una forma más peligrosa, pero
que seis pacientes han sido encontrados
con un virus resistente
a Tamiflu, la droga más comúnmente
utilizada de gripa de cerdo.
El laboratorio confirmó casos
de la enfermedad han alcanzado
162.380, pero QUE dijo que este
número subestima la carga de caja
total porque países muy afectados
ya no son probar todas las
personas con síntomas de gripa.
Lilac Festival Celebrates
20th Anniversary!
“If only the Festival would
have lasted two days.” This
statement seem to be the
general feeling amongst the
thousands who made their
way down to 4th St on May
31 for the annual Lilac Festival.
Perhaps making up
for last year’s rainy day, the
weather this time around was
nothing short of spectacular;
warm, sunny and blue
skies. Beer gardens filled to
capacity,beach volleyball, gocart
racing,entire families perusing
the hundreds of booths
offering anything from exotic
butterfly decorations,mouth
watering food,clothing,food
,jewelry,arts and crafts, to even
classic Mexican wrestling
masks, there was something
for everyone to do and enjoy.
With up to seven performance
stages there was no shortage
of fantastic entertainment this
year. You almost wished you
could be in several places at
once to enjoy them all. Among
the many dance performances
this year were Irish, African,
Ukrainian,Polish,Thai, and
the always popular Venezuelan
and Colombian whose
performers would invite
the crowd to dance with
them. Capoeira demonstrations
are always a pleasure
to watch since they combine
music,dance and martial art
acrobatics all into one. And if
anything of the mentioned so
far is not what you enjoyed at
the festival, chances are you
probably were enjoying something
else. Maybe tap dancing
or perhaps you were checking
out the many street performers
and artists that were scattered
through out the event, or even
the rock bands that had the
crowds go crazy. This year’s
Lilac Festival celebrated its
20th anniversary and with out
a doubt its one that will go into
the books as one of the best!
Si solamente el Festival habría durado
dos días”. Esta declaración parece
ser el general que siente entre
el miles que avanzaron hacia abajo
al 4 San en el 31 de mayo para el
Festival Lila anual. Compensando
quizás último día lluvioso de año,
el tiempo esta vez alrededor de
fue nada menos que espectacular;
calente, Sunny y cielos azules. Las
terrazas de verano llenaron a la capacidad,
el voley playa, el cochecito
que compite, las familias enteras
que examinan con detenimiento
los cientos de puestos que ofrecen
algo de decoraciones exóticas de
mariposa, la boca que riega food,c
lothing,food,jewelry,arts y los artes,
a máscaras aún clásicas de lucha
de mexicano, había algo para todos
hacer y disfrutar de. Con hasta siete
etapas de desempeño no había escasez
de entretenimiento fantástico
este año. Usted casi deseó que usted
pudiera estar en varios lugares de
25th World Partnership Walk
Attracts Thousands
In an effort to increase
and raise funds to fight
global poverty thousands
of Calgarians took
part in the 25th World
Partnership Walk. The
massive event which
actually takes place in
9 cities across Canada
including Ottawa, Montreal,
Toronto, Kitchener,
London, Victoria,
and Vancouver took
place in Calgary on Sunday
June 14 at Prince’s
Island Park. Organized
by volunteers the Partnership
Walk has been
so succesful that last
year about 5.5 million
were raised through
out Canada. The money
reaised is then focus to
help developing countries
in areas such as
Health, Education, Rural
Development, and
Community Organizations.
What is impressive
about the walk is
that all funds raised
(100%) will go directly
to those areas needed.
An initiative of the
Aga Khan Foundation
Canada and its national
network of volunteers
has made the Partnership
Walk one the most
respected fundraisers
across the world. On a
side note the Aga Khan
Foundation Canada is
in fact known for promoting
development
in Asia, Africa and the
Middle East. Being Canadian,
the Partnership
Walk also helps demonstrate
how readily
Canadians are when it
comes to helping other
nations in time of need.
For those who attended
the walk there were various
way in which they
cause including silent
IT HAPPENED IN AUGUST
August 2, 1939 - Albert Einstein
wrote a letter to President
Franklin D. Roosevelt concerning
the possibility of atomic weapons.
“A single bomb of this type
carried by boat and exploded in a
port, might very well destroy the
whole port together with some
of the surrounding territory.” Six
years later, on August 6, 1945,
the first atomic bomb, developed
by the U.S., was dropped
on the Japanese port of Hiroshima.
August 4, 1962 - Apartheid
opponent Nelson
Mandela was arrested by
security police in South
Africa. He was then tried
and sentenced to five
years in prison. In 1963,
he was placed on trial for
sabotage, high treason and
conspiracy to overthrow
the government and was
sentenced to life in prison.
A worldwide campaign
to free him began in the
1980s and resulted in his
1990, at age 71 after 27
years in prison. In 1993,
Mandela shared the Nobel
Peace Prize with South
Africa’s President F.W. de
Klerk for their peaceful
efforts to bring a nonracial
democracy to South Africa.
In April 1994, black
South Africans voted for
the first time in an election
that brought Mandela the
presidency of South Africa.
Pero dar su nombre a Sextilis
le pareció poco a Octavio,
quien consideraba
que aún no había alcanzado
la misma gloria que Julio
César, ya que Iulius tenía
31 días y Augustus, sólo

NUESTRO PLANETA!
Nuestro planeta sostiene
muchas formas de vida,
dándonos aire para respirar,
agua para beber y un hábitat
donde podemos vivir. En la
Tierra, todos estos elementos
naturales se entrelazan para
formar un sistema equilibrado
pero frágil. A veces,
la actividad humana altera
este equilibrio. Afortunadamente
nosotros tenemos el
poder de restablecerlo. Todos
tenemos una labor qué
cumplir en la protección de
la Tierra para estar seguros
de que nuestros hijos hereden
un planeta saludable.
Dicen por ahi, “Si no te
espera cinco minutos”
Bueno, el que dijo eso no
pudo haberze equivocado
de peor manera,ya que
durante La Estampida
este year casi solo nos
cayo pura lluvia. Haviendo
dicho eso, en realidad
no importo como estuvo
el clima. Miles y miles
de Calgarianos y turistas
pasaron por los portones
de La Estampida para una
vez mas tomar parte en
lo que en Norte America
se conoce como “ The
por los desayunos de
gente se alargaran hasta
desilusiono, gritos de
Yehaa!! se pudian oir por
todo el recorrido de las
carrozas. Espectaculos
de todo tipo y tan distinto
de uno al otro aseguraron
que toda la gente quedara
satisfecha con el entretenimiento.
How can we cut global
warming pollution?
It’s simple: By reducing pollution
from vehicles and power
plants. Right away, we should
put existing technologies for
building cleaner cars and more
modern electricity generators
into widespread use. We can increase
our reliance on renewable
energy sources such as wind,
sun and geothermal. And we
can manufacture more efficient
appliances and conserve energy.
musica de country usted
pudo haber disfrutado del
espectaculo en el Grand
Stand Show. Bailarines,
acrobatas, musica, y
mucho mas fueron unos
de los varios numeros
que hicieron que el espectaculo
de este year
fuera reconozido como
uno de los mejores en
hace mucho tiempo. Por
supuesto no hay que
olvidarse de las ruedas
mecanicas y cienes de
juegos de los que la mulitud
pudo disfrutar sin
importarle que hora del
dia hera. Por primera vez
en la Estampida tres “cuervos”
que son parte de
el Teatro de Calgary anduvieron
rondando entre
la gente tomandose fotos
con ellas. Hablando de
cuervos, los Indios vestidos
con sus vestuarios
tradicionales adornados
de miles de plumas de
aguilas o cuervos de-
pendiendo a que tribu
pertenesian hicieron un
espectaculo maravilloso.
Hasta huvieron competiciones
de baile entre ellos
mismo como el baile
de circulo y el baile de
aros. Y por supuesto que
hiba a hacer una Estampida
si no se hablaba de
la comida. Coca refrita,
helados refritos, twinkies
refritos, parece que todo
es refrito no? No se
preocupe tambien avia
pizza en un palo, piernas
enteras de pavo, carne
azada y mis refrigerios
preferidos, esas chiquitas
donitas que con tanta
canela y azucar estan seguras
de darme un ataque
de diabetis. En fin, La
Estampida vino y se fue
una vez mas, y no nos
queda mas que esperar
otros 365 dias para otra
vez poder disfrutar del
Opa! To The 11th Annual Greek Festival.
Canadian Latino
The weekend of June 19
to 21 saw Calgarians immerse
themselves in the
11th annual Greek Festival.
Quickly becoming
a fun filled family event
the three day festival took
place in the Spruce Cliff
Community of Calgary’s
SW district. There was
no shortage of enthusiastic
kids who took part
It costs nothing and brings
much - not least to the smiler.
‘Smiling is a way of tricking
your brain into thinking that
everything’s okay, even if it’s
not. People who are mildly depressed
should do their best to
show the world a happy face as
that will improve people’s reaction
to you and lift your mood.
PROTEGE NUESTROS
5) Plantando 20 millones
de árboles,
proporcionarán la tierra
y su gente 260 millones
de más toneladas de
oxígeno. Esos mismos
20 millones de árboles
quitarán 10 millones de
toneladas de CO2.
6) Los árboles proporcionan
el abrigo y el alimento
para la fauna tal
como pájaros, ardillas, e
insectos. Las arboledas
de árboles proporcionan
el alimento y la cubierta
para mamíferos más
grandes, tales como
mapaches y ciervos.
7) Los árboles hacen
sentir bien de la gente.
Los trabajadores son
más productivos cuando
ven árboles a lo largo
de su conmutar las rutas
y de sus ventanas de la
oficina.
8) Internos que hacen
que una vista de árboles
cure más rápidamente,
in the number of activities
designed specifically
for them including face
painting, various games
and jump houses to name
a few. For the
of eating it
was hard not to
try any of the
mouth watering
dishes that
were served
at festival including
the famous Souvlaki
platters and Pitas. Of
course you could always
wash down these dishes
with your choice of red
or white wine. For dessert
you also had the choices
8 por ciento pocos días
en el hospital.
9) Los consumidores
están dispuestos a pasar
más dinero en districtos
de las compras con los
árboles. Están dispuesta
a pagar más los productos
comprados en un
districto de las compras
con los árboles. Esos
mismos compradores
también dicen que están
dispuestos a permanecer
más largos y a clasificar
los productos y los
almacenes como más
de alta calidad en un
Making the festival really
special was the fact that
everyone always greeted
you with a warm smile and
even went out their way to
make sure you were having
a good time. Opa! to
putting on a great show.
SMILE! SONREIR!
No cuesta nada y trae mucho - no menos
al sonreir. ‘Sonreír es una manera
de engañar el cerebro en pensamiento
que todo está bien, incluso si no sea.
Las personas que son deprimidas ligeramente
deben hacer cuanto deben
poder para mostrar el mundo una cara
feliz como que mejorará la reacción
de personas a usted y levantará su humor.
July 25-26,
2009 - The Weekend is no
easy feat, but your generous
donation and continual support
along with the dedicated
effort of our Walkers, Crew
Members, and Volunteers
have raised over $3 million
to further innovative cancer
research, screening initiatives
and patient programs that
will not only benefit those
suffering from breast cancer,
but all women’s cancers.
WALK FOR CANCER 2009
On behalf of the Alberta
Cancer Foundation, thank
you for supporting The 2009
Weekend to End Breast Cancer.
You have made a bigger
impact than ever before
since this year’s event was
expanded to include funding
for breast cancer and gynecological
cancers as well. Our
new digital mobile screening
facilities will be on the roads
of Alberta this summer and
more than 54 research programs
at the Cross Cancer Institute
and Tom Baker Cancer
Centre will continue to search
for the answers we need to put
an end to women’s cancers.
What is prostate
cancer?
Prostate cancer occurs when
cells within the prostate grow
uncontrollably, creating small
tumors. The term “cancer” refers
to a condition in which
the regulation of cell growth is
lost and cells grow uncontrollably.
Most cells in the body
are constantly dividing, maturing
and then dying in a tightly
controlled process. Unlike
normal cells, the growth of
cancer cells is no longer wellregulated.
Instead of dying as
they should, cancer cells outlive
normal cells and continue
to form new, abnormal cells.
Abnormal cell growths are
called tumors. The term “primary
tumor” refers to the original
tumor; secondary tumors
are caused when the original
cancer spreads to other locations
in the body. Prostate
cancer typically is comprised
of multiple very small, primary
tumors within the prostate.

B-boys Steal Show at Driven 2009
NESTOR RAUDA
Canadian Latino
Fans of Hot rides,B-boy,and
Video games came under
one roof on June 13 for
the Driven 2009 Auto Culture
Trade Show. Unlike
other trade shows Driven
tends to be gear towards
the younger crowds. The
Big Four Building on the
Stampede grounds hosted
the event which attracted
dozens of spectators. The
show which gave owners
of suit up cars the chance
to show off their rides was
more than just about cars.
Fans of the popular video
game Street Fighter IV,
also had the opportunity to
engage in a tournament of
the game all for a chance
to win $500.00 in cash. In
addition aspiring models
could used the show as
a stepping stone in their
modeling career by representing
one of the various
exhibitors on hand.
Prizes give away were
also part of the show as
some even did a little lap-
dancing hoping to win a
brand new Blu-ray player.
No doubt the more entertaining
aspect of the
event was the hip-hop and
dance crews competitions.
Dance groups would take
the stage and captivate the
crowd with their intricate
choreography. Breakers on
the other hand would go
head to head on a danze-off
as well. Hoohs and AAhhs
was all that appeared to be
coming from the crowd as
the breakers would spin,
pop, and literally turn into
a human pretzel as they
burned up the dance floor.
And those who followed
So You Think You Can
Dance Canada, got a special
treat as they welcomed
back finalist and fellow
Calgarian,Miles Faber,
who made a special appearance
at the event. Those in
attendance went wild as
they witnessed Faber put
on a clinic of his own funky
style of hip-hop. While
performing, Faber seemed
to be in a hypnotic trance
as he would manipulate his
body into robot-like stances
which cleverly mixed
with the music made for
simply an awesome show.
How old are you?
A woman walked up to
a little old man rocking
in a chair on his porch.
“I couldn’t help noticing
how happy you look,”
she said. “What’s your secret
for a long happy life?”
“I smoke three packs of cigarettes
a day,” he said. “I also drink
a case of whiskey a week, eat
fatty foods, and never exercise.”
“That’s amazing,” the woman
said. “How old are you?’
“Twenty-six,” he said.
Wedding Anniversary
celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary. On the way home,
she notices a tear in his eye and
asks if he’s getting sentimental
because they’re celebrating 50
wonderful years together. He replies,
“No, I was thinking about
the time before we got married.
Your father threatened me with
a shotgun and said he’d have
me thrown in jail for 50 years if
I didn’t marry you. Tomorrow
I would’ve been a free man!”
Hearing Aid
Seems an elderly gentleman
gentleman to hear 100%.
The elderly gentleman went
back in a month to the doctor
and the doctor said, “Your
hearing is perfect. Your family
must be really pleased
that you can hear again.”
To which the gentleman said,
“Oh, I haven’t told my family
yet. I just sit around and listen
to the conversations. I’ve
changed my will three times!”
