En unos días Calgary
se transformará con la
celebración del Calgary
Stampede, este evento
siempre cambia el espíritu de
la ciudad y la gente disfruta de
desayunos gratis en vagones
del oeste, generalmente
ofrecidos por los negocios y
corporaciones de la ciudad.
Algunos de estos han dando
un nuevo significado a éstos
desayunos como North
Hill News al solicitar a sus
invitados la donación de
un producto no perecedero
o de efectivo para los
$1.1 millón a organizaciones sin fines de lucro para comunidades

Jóvenes en riesgo, adultos mayores, y refugios
de emergencia para mujeres son sólo tres de

de la concesión de $1.1 millón de dólares
distribuídos en 36 organizaciones sin fines
de lucro por la Wild Rose Foundation.
La Wild Rose Foundation es una agencia
respaldada por la lotería creada por el
Gobierno de Alberta en Noviembre de
1984. La fundación está dirigida por un
Directorio de siete personas. Actualmente
el Honorable Gary Mar es el Ministro de
Desarrollo Comunitario en Alberta y también
Ministro responsable de la Fundación.
El programa de concesiones de Wild Rose
Foundation brinda asistencia de programas
y servicios que enriquecen y fortalecen
las comunidades dentro del Programa
de Voluntarios de Alberta, incluyendo
programas de mentores, programas de salud,
servicios de crísis y de equipo y muebles,
estos son proyectos comunes bajo los
pragramas de concesión trimestrales.

On July 14, 2004 Vice-
Chairman Steve Allen
unveiled the 2005 Calgary
Stampede Poster. Alberta
artist Ken Dewar illustrated
the Stampede poster for
Alberta’s Centennial year
(he also produced the
large Stampede mural at
the Calgary International
Airport).
The posters have been
produced since 1912. The
poster’s unique elements tell
us about how the Stampede
has become a part of our
community.

Youth at risk, seniors, and women’s
emergency shelters are just three areas that
have benefited from $1.1 million in grants
distributed to 36 non-profit organizations
by the Wild Rose Foundation.
The Wild Rose Foundation is a lottery
funded agency created by the Government
of Alberta in November of 1984. Governed
by a seven person Board of Directors.

Currently the Honourable Gary Mar is the
Minister of Community Development in
Alberta and is also the Minister responsible
for the Wild Rose Foundation.
The Wild Rose Foundation grant program
assists with programs and services that enrich
and strengthen communities within Alberta.
Volunteer programs, outreach programs,
mentoring programs, health-related
programs, crisis services, and furnishings
and equipment are common projects under
the quarterly grants program.
“Alberta’s voluntary sector is a leader
in delivering innovative and effective
programs,” said Gary Mar, Minister of
Community Development. “These grants,
through the Wild Rose Foundation, provide
funding to help these organizations enhance
and enrich the lives of Albertans.”
To be eligible for the Wild Rose Foundation
Quarterly Grants Program, an organization
must be legally registered as a society, nonprofit
company, charity or service club in
Alberta for a minimum of one year, and the
nature and scope of its activities must be
health, social service or community-service
oriented. Successful applicants must also
demonstrate community support that meets
or exceeds the grant amount requested. The

Este mes se celebra el Día del Padre, el 19 de
Junio, con suerte muchos recibiremos regalos
y estaremos con nuestros hijos. Gracias a Dios
por ellos. Por lo tanto considero necesario y
casi inevitable escribir acerca de la Familia, más
específicamente de los Valores Familiares.
Actualmente se están haciendo y discutiendo
muchas preguntas acerca de los Valores
Familiares, donde el argumento del futuro de
la familia se ha traslado al tema del matrimonio
entre personas del mismo sexo.
El futuro de la Familia está en crísis en Norte
Amérifa y debido a que vivimos aquí, y nuestros
hijos están creciendo aquí, viendo, leyendo,
oyendo y probablemente confundiéndose
debido a todos estos mensajes cruzados que
debemos de preocuparnos. Es verdad que la
mayoría de nosotros tenemos fuertes valores
familiares, pero la pregunta es: ¿Estamos
enseñando y asegurándonos de que nuestros
hijos vivan bajo estos fuertes valores morales
y familiares? ¿Nos cansamos de hablar con
ellos? Yo sé que algunas veces he querido tirar
la toalla, ya sabe?, como en el boxeo?, pero al
siguiente día estoy listo de nuevo. Debemos
de tomar un descanso pero nunca desistir.
Dos de las organizaciones legales con más
influencia, el American Law Institute y Law
Commission of Canada están proponiendo dar
respuesta a muchas preguntas que de antemano
son inaceptables como: Puede un niño tener
3 padres legalemente? La paternidad debería
determinarse rutinariamente por alguna forma
que no sea la biológica? Deberíamos otorgar
el derecho al matrimonio a parejas del mismo
sexo? O deberíamos de abolir de una vez por
todas el matrimonio como institución legal?
Estamos alejándonos de la razón histórica, los
niños deben ser criados por su propia madre
y padre.
Se ha preguntado alguna vez ¿Cómo será la
próxima generación? Yo pienso que si elegimos
enredarnos con los valores fundamentales,
veremos muchos reclamos de niños que
crecieron dentro de familias no tradicionales,
algunos talvez dados en adopción a parejas
del mismo sexo? ¿Les estamos dando a
elegir? Yo creo que esto aumentará más la
fragmentación de la familia.
También creo que deberíamos de cuidar no
sólo nuestros valores familiares, pero también
nuestros valores culturales. Me gusta mucho
mi idioma y creo que necesitamos motivar a
nuestros hijos a aprender Español, ellos no
deben sentir pena, al contrario deben sentirse
orugullosos de su habilidad de hablar otro
idioma. Es nuestra tarea y responsabilidad
asegurarnos que sepan Español.
Los voy a dejar con la que considero una
acertada descripción de Ann Landers sobre lo
que los hijos piensan de los padres.
Mi padre cuando yo tenía:
Menos de 8 años:
Mi papá puede hacer cualquier cosa.
Mi papá sabe mucho.
A los 12 años:
naturalmente, papá no sabe nada de esto. Es
demasiado viejo para recordar su niñez.
Entre los 14 y los 21 años:
No prestes atención a mi papá. Es demasiado
anticuado.
A los 25 años:
Papá sabe un poco sobre esto, pero es natural,
porque ha vivido mucho tiempo.
Entre los 30 y 40 años:
Me pregunto qué hubiera hecho papá en
este caso. Era tan sensato y tenía mucha
experiencia.
A los 50 años:
Daría cualquier cosa porque papá estuviera
ahora aquí, para poder discutir esto con él.
Es una lástima que no haya apreciado lo
inteligente que era. Pude haber aprendido
mucho de él.
This month Father’s Day is celebrated,
on June 19th, hopefully many of us will
receive gifts and our kids will be around us.
Thanks God for them. Therefore I consider
necessary and almost inevitable to write
about the Family, more specifically Family
Values.
Currently many questions are being asked
and discussed about Family Values, where
the argument about the future of family has
moved to same-sex marriage.
The future of the Family is in crisis in North
America and because this is where we
live, and our kids are growing up looking,
reading, listening and probably getting all
confused from all this mixed messages that
we should be concerned. It is true that most
of us have very strong family values, but
the big question is: Are we teaching and
making sure our kids understand and live
by strong moral Family Values? Do we get
tired of talking to them? I know sometimes
I feel like throwing the towel, you know,
like in a boxing fight, but the next day I
am ready again. We must take a break but
never quit.
Two of the most influential legal
organizations, the American Law Institute
and the Law Commission of Canada are
proposing to answer questions for many
of us already unacceptable, such as Can
a child have three legal parents?, Should
parenthood be routinely determined by
something other than biology? Should we
extend the right to marriage to same-sex
couples? To groups of people? Or should
we abolish marriage as a legal institution
all together?
We are missing a historical point, children
should be raised by their own mother and
father.
Have you ever ask yourself how the next
generation will be like? I think if we choose
to mess around with fundamental values,
we will see lots of claims from kids raised
within non-traditional families, some
maybe given for adoption to same-sex
couples? Are we giving them a choice? I
believe this will bring further fragmentation
of ‘families’.
I also think that we should take care not only
of family values but of our cultural values.
I like my language very much and I believe
we need to start encouraging our children
to learn Spanish, they shouldn’t feel shame
of being able to speak another language,
on the contrary they should be proud of
their skill. It is our duty and responsibility
to make sure they know Spanish.
I am going to leave you with the right
description that Ann Landers makes about
how children think of their father. (She used
to write for newspapers around the world) .
My father when I was...
8 years old or younger:
My Dad can make almost anything.
My Dad knows a lot.
12 years old:
Of course, my Dad knows nothing about it.
He is too old to remember his childhood.
Between 14 - 21 years old:
Don’t pay attention to my Dad. He is oldfashioned
25 years old:
Dad knows a something about it, but of
course he had live for so long.
Between 30 - 40 yrs. old:
I wonder what would my dad have done in
this situation. He was so wise and had lots
of experience.
At 50:
I would give anything to have my dad here
now, to be able to discuss this with him. I
am sorry I didn’t appreciate his intelligence.
I could have learn a lot from him.

Un Regalo de Amor verdadero de los niños de Calgary a Hermosillo
A truly Gift of Love from Calgary’s children to Hermosillo

El pasado domingo 29 de mayo,
A Gift of Love ofreció un Open
House para presentar a la prensa
de Calgry a los niños embajadroes
y su proyecto de Hermosillo.
A Gift of Love fue fundado en Mayo
de 2004 por un grupo de niños
y sus madres. A pesar de ser una
agrupación relativamente nueva,
cuenta con patrocinadores como
WestJet, Canadian Feightways,
Precision Drilling, Boardwal Rental
Communities, First Energy y varias
coroporaciones privadas.
Hace un año dos mil paquetes
con juguetes, zapatos, equipo
deportivo y material escolar fueron
llevados a Mexico y entregados a
5 escuellas y orfanatos de Ciudad
del Carmen.
Este año, aproximadamente
136 niños y adultos voluntarios
visitaron escuelas y orfanatos en
Hermosillo. Uno de estos es Casa
Hogar La Providencia (orfanato)
Marcela Fernández, presidente
de esta Casa Hogar, estuvo muy
contenta por la visita de A Gift of
Love, esta lugar cuida de más de
50 niñas huérfanas y les provee de
alimentos, vestido y educación.

junio como parte del grupo.

y Silvia Landavazo de Mexico para
ayudar con los últimos detalles de
la visita de los Niños Embajadores.
Durante este evento los niños de
más de 12 escuelas de Calgary
estuvieron bien ocupados,
dibujando, coloreando banderas
de Canada y México y contestando
cartas a sus amigos del Programa
de Pen Pal para lo cual contaron
con la ayuda de la familia Correa
para la traducción.
Entre los niños encontramos a Kira
McNicol, Joey Wright, and Damon
Collins.
Michelle Cameron, Barbara Dimnik,
Laura kanter, Marina Dinapoli,
Patricia Kanafany, la familia Correa
y Daniel Kanter son sólo algunos de

Last Sunday May 29th, A Gift of
Love had an Open House Event
to present the Calgary Media,
the Kid’s Ambassadors and its
Hermosillo Project.
A Gift of Love was founded in May
2004 by a group of children and
their mothers. Although it is a fairly
new association they have managed
to have among their supporters
WestJet, Canadian Freightways,
Precision Drilling, Boardwalk Rental
Communities, First Energy and
several other corporate and private
sponsors.
A year ago, two thousand packages
of toys, shoes, sport equipment
and school supplies were flown
to Mexico and delivered to five
schools and orphanages in Ciudad
del Carmen.

orphan young girls, and provide
them with food, clothing and
education.

up with the details for the visit of
the Kids Ambassadors.
During this event the kids from a
dozen Calgary schools were all
busy, drawing, coloring Canadian
and Mexican flags, answering
letters from the Pen Pal Program,
helped by the Correa family with
the translation.
Among them we found Kira
McNicol, Joey Wright, and Damon
Collins.
Michelle Cameron, Barbara Dimnik,
Laura kanter, Marina Dinapoli,
Patricia Kanafany, Correa’s family
and Daniel Kanter are among the
volunteers.

leader about Girl Guides?
El movimiento de las
Niñas Guías en Calgary se
inició en 1931 y desde
entonces su participación
en la comunidad ha sido
extensiva.
Las Niñas Guías del Area
de Calgary realizaron
recientemente un concurso
de ensayo, el tema fue
“¿Si conocieras a un líder
mundial, que le dirías acerca
de las Niñas Guías?”.
Cien de las participantes
que enviaron sus ensayos
fueron seleccionadas para
recibir a la Reina a su arrivo
al almuerzo del Round Up
Centre. Las niñas y 25 líderes
también recibieron a otros
dignatarios que llegaron al
almuerzo y hablaron con
muchos de ellos.
El siguiente ensayo enviado
por Victoria D.., fue
seleccionado ganador.
“Me gustan muchas cosas
acerca de las Niñas Guías.
Es divertido, emocionante
y algunas veces retador.
Cuando llegue aquí de
Maryland, EE.UU, yo no
tenía amigos. Una vez que
me integré a las Niñas
Guías, hice muchas nuevas
amistades, de mi escuela y de
otras escuelas. También me
gusta como todos se unen,
nadie se queda de fuera. Las
líderes son de lo mejor que te
puedas imaginar.
Los rangos (emblemas)
son retadores y divertidos.
Realmente me gusta como cada
rango es diferente de otro. Yo
tengo 18 geniales emblemas
en mi solapa. Acampar
siempre es sorprendente.
Siempre voy a acampar y es
muy divertido: marshmallows,
fogatas, tiendas, caminatas y
mucho más. Las Niñas Guías
es una grandiosa actividad
para niñas”.
El Lilac Festival en la Cuarta Calle con Fiebre de Salsa
Lilac Festival on 4th Street with Salsa Fever
El Lilac Festival en la Calle Cuatro no es sólo el Festival
al aire libre más grande de Calgary, pero también es una
exibición multicultrual que atrae a vendedores que ofertan
sus productos y manualidades de los cuatro rincones del
planeta. El entretenimiento también es Multicultural desde
temas del Oeste hasta el Tema del Baile del León Chino.
Lo que comenzó como un pequeño sueño en la Calle
Cuatro ahora atrae a más de 80,000 personas lo que
podría llamarse como la Milla de la Cuarta Calle, similar
al Calgary Flames Stanley Cup cuando a la 17 Avenida
se le apodó la Milla Roja. El Lilac Festival puede reclamar
para sí misma el título de “Lilac Festival de la Milla de la
Calle Cuatro” y dada la multitud que caminaba hombro
con hombro a lo largo de esta franja, significa eso, una
milla llena de diversión.
Hasta los más jóvenes se divirtieron pintándose la cara con
figuras de su elección como mariposas tatuadas en sus
brazos y disfrutando de todas las cosas sabrosas en las que
podían enterrar sus dientes.
El escenario del Festival
en la garita de entrada se
convirtió en una fiesta por
sí misma pues la multitud
que se agrupaba la tarde
del domingo se vio invadida
de una Fiebre Latina antes
de iniciar su camino a lo
largo de la Cuarta Calle. La
actuación en el escenario
del reconocido grupo
musical Latin Beat invitó
con sus acordes a los
fanáticos de la Salsa.
Una de las muchas casetas
con información valiosa era
la de Calgary Communities
Against Sexual Abuse
(CCASA). La agencia
provee información y alerta
a aquellos que lo necesitan,

The Girl Guide movement
in Calgary began in 1913,
and from the beginning,
their involvement with
the community has been
extensive.
The Calgary Area Girl
Guides had an essay contest
recently, the topic was “If
you could meet a world
leader, what would you tell
them about Girl Guides.”
One hundred girls who
submitted essays were
selected to greet the Queen
as she arrived for lunch at
the Round Up Centre. The
girls and 25 of their leaders
also greeted the other
dignitaries that arrived for
lunch, and spoke with many
of them.
The following essay
submitted by Victoria D., a
Guide was selected as the
winner.
“I like many things about Girl
Guides. It is fun, exciting,
and even challenging
sometimes. When I first
moved here from Maryland,
USA, I didn’t have very many
friends. Once I joined Girl
Guides, I made lots of new
friends, both from my school
and from different schools.
I also like how everybody is
together, nobody is left out.
The leaders are the best you
could ever imagine.
Badges are fun and
challenging. I really like
how each badge is unique
and exciting in it’s own
way. I have 18 awesomely
cool badges on my sash.
Camping is always really
amazing. I have always
gone to camp and it is so
much fun: marshmallows,
campfires, cabins or tents,
hikes and much more. Girl
Guides is a great activity for
girls.”

The Lilac Festival on 4th street is not only Calgary’s biggest
outdoor festival, but also a Multi-Cultural Exhibition
attracting vendors offering products and crafts from the 4
corners of the Planet. Entertainment is also focused on
Multi- Culturalism from Western Theme to
Chinese Lion Dancing.
What began as a small dream for 4th Street
and now attracting more than 80,000 can
be termed the 4th Street Mile, similar to
the Calgary Flames Stanley Cup Challenge
when 17th Ave was dubbed the Red Mile.
Lilac Festival can lay claim to itself as the
Lilac Festival 4th Street Mile and given
the shoulder to shoulder crowd along the
stretch means just that, one long fun filled
mile.
Even the youngsters had a fun filled day
getting faced painted to the character of
their choice of getting Butterfly symbols
tattooed on their arms as well as enjoying
all the goodies that one can get their teeth
into.
The Festival Stage at the entrance gate
of the Festival was a party in itself as the
Sunday afternoon crowd
got caught up in Latin Fever
before heading down the
length of 4th Street. The
stage performance by well
known local Band Latin Beat
strung thru the entrance
area attracting Salsa Fans.
One of the many valuable
information booths was
hosted by the Calgary
Communities Against
Sexual Abuse (CCASA).
The agency provides
information and awareness
of where those in need
can seek help or extended
information in a issue that
often is overlooked. The
information booth was
informative and for those
needing information click
onto www.calgarycasa.com.
The CCASA booth was
busy dotting faces and
arms of adults and children
getting the face painting of
their dreams and dare to be
different at Lilac Festival.

La Casa Latina, un
sueño de 23 años
para Héctor Menjívar,
dueño y Chef de esta
cocina latinoamericana,
finalmente se hizo realidad
hace un par de años.
Menjívar, originario de

The “Big four”, GUY WEADICK, THE VICTORY STAMPEDE AND MORE
En 1875 se construye el Fuerte Calgary
por la Policía Montada del Noroeste en
la confluencia de los ríos Bow y Elbow, es
entonces que Calgary se establece.
El Calgary Stampede ha experimentado
muchos cambios desde sus inicios en 1886
como Feria de Agricultura, y hoy es una
atracción mundialmente
famosa.
Guy Weadick, un vaquero
que hacía trucos con el
lazo vino a presentarse a
Dominion Exhibition en
1909, una feria nacional
que se celebraba en

NorthWest Mounted Police at the confluence
of the Bow and Elbow riversand then Calgary
was settled.
The Calgary Stampede experienced lots of
changes since 1886, when all started as
an Agricultural Fair, and now it is a World-
Famous Attraction.
Guy Weadick, a cowboy trick roper came to
perform at the Dominion Exhibition in 1908,
a national fair held in Calgary. It was him
who returned a few years later to organize
the original Calgary Stampede celebrated
from September 2 to 5, 1912 and became
a great success.
The financial backers, of this Stampede
celebration were known as the “Big Four”
and they were Pat Burns (meat businessman),
A.E. Cross (brewery business) George Lane,
and Archie J. McLean (ranchers). They also
backed the Victory Stampede in 1919, to
celebrate the end of
World War 1.
In 1923 the

Exhibition and
Stampede offering

and the Chuckwagon
Races are held for
the first time.
In 1932 the
Stampede had a
new director from
Montana, Jack Dillon
who replaced Guy Weadick, who died in

The first Stampede Queen ever elected was
Patsy Rodgers in 1946 and in 1968 The
Calgary Stampede becomes a 10 day event.
In 1972 the Rodeo Royal is held for the first
time and attracted over 18,000 visitors.
An overwhelming attendance to The Calgary
Stampede of over one million people in
1976 breaks all records and it is until 1985
that this record is met or exceeded again.
The Half Million Dollar Rodeo is announced
in 1982 with a $50,000 prize for every
rodeo event. A series of Park Murals started
to be built in 1996 as new attractions, now
there are several of them.
To top all this wonderful Stampede
Celebration History it is that last year in
2004 The Calgary Stampede introduces for
the first time the $1,000,000.00 professional
rodeo.

El Nuevo Lugar de la Famailia es un centro
de recursos ofrecido por el Calgary Catholic
Immigration Society.

Martha Cháves y el negocio serio de la “Risa”
Martha Cháves and the serious business of “Laugh”
Habla 4 idiomas (5 si está intoxicada o
rezando). Martha Cháves, Nicaragüense actúa
muy normal bajo las luces, y rápidamente
dice un chiste: “Yo revelo muchas cosas, soy
una refugiada política y cada vez que estoy
bajo la luz tengo urgencia por confesar”.
Su contagioso estilo la ha llevado del círculo
de clubes de comedia a la luz del Montreal
Show, al Festival de Comedia de 1994 “Just
For Laughs”. Desde entonces ha aparecido 3
veces más en JFL. En 1996 en la apertura del
concierto de Tito Puente en el Club Metrópolis
en Montreal, después en “Caroline’s” en New
York y “La Fábrica de la Risa” en los Angeles.
El mismo año estuvo muy emocionada de
iniciar el Show de Gloria Estefan en Toronto,
en el 2004 compartió el escenario de Lula
Lounge con su coterráneo cantautor Luis
Enrique Mejía Godoy, y la Gala de “Festival
de la Comedia de Toronto”.
Este año, el 29 de Abril, actuó en la Gala de
la Risa en el Auditorio Rebecca Cohn, el 27
en Nova Scotia en el Casino de la Comedia y
el 25 de Abril en el DNTH.
Actualmente ella es la estrella del Yuk Yuks
Comedy Club de Toronto, donde se presenta
lo mejor de los comediantes canadienses.
Ser comediante es un negocio muy serio,
dice Martha, pero “desde que era una niña en
Nicaragua me gustaba hacer reir a la gente.
Yo creo que uno nace con ello”. El humor
de los nicaragüenses es natural, tendemos

Fluent in 4 languages (5 if intoxicated or
praying), Nicaraguan-born Martha Chaves
performs quite naturally alone under a bright
light, and she is quick to tell a joke: “I reveal
many things, I am a political refugee and
every time I under the light I have the urge to
confess”.
Her contagious style
led her from the
comedy club circuit
to the spotlight of the
“Montreal Show” at
the “Just For Laughs”
Comedy Festival in
1994. She has since
appeared 3 more
times in JFL. In 1996
as the opening for the
Tito Puente concert
in Club Metropolis
in Montreal, then at
“Caroline’s” in New
York City and “The
Laugh Factory” in
Los Angeles. The same year she was thrilled to
start the Gloria Estefan Show in Toronto, in
2004 she shared the Lula Lounge stage with
also Nicaraguan song singer/song writer Luis
Enrique Mejía Godoy, and at the Gala of the
“Toronto Comedy Festival”.
Recently on April 29 she performed during the
Gala Laughs, at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium,
on April 27 in Nova Scotia at the Comedy
Casino and on April 25 at the DNTH (Definitely
not this hour).
She is currently a favorite performer at the Yuk
Yuks Comedy Club of Toronto, where the best
Canadian comedians perform.
Being a comedian is a very serious business,
Martha said, but “Ever since I was a little
girl back in Nicaragua I always like to make
people laugh. I think one is born with it. The
Nicaraguan humour is natural, we tend to
laughs out of almost anything, our problems,
politic, education, war, peace, you name it.
During the last 8 years she has performed in
Canada, Dominican Republic, Colleges, and
Universities. In Hollywood she acted with
Denzel Washington in the movie John Q. A
year later she was called to appear on Down to
Earth with Chris Rock for CBS and at the 2003
Toronto Film Festival in the shortfilm Perfect. A
sample of her jokes is this one: “I was reading
that ecstasy can provoque a sexual climax for
8 hours. 8 hours! I didn’t know that an orgasm
could be faked that long!

Como resultado del contínuo
aumento en el nivel de
las aguas en Calgary, el
Departamento de Bomberos
está reenforzando los

Calgary, the Fire Department
would like to re-enforce
the following extremely
important water safety
messages. Waters are starting
to recede, however, they are
still high and pose significant
dangers.
Banks along both the Elbow
and Bow Rivers are very
dangerous due to erosion
and can collapse without
warning.
It’s imperative that the public
stay well back from the
banks until the water levels
recede back to normal levels.
This message is also for the
banks of wet & dry ponds
throughout the city. Banks
along the ponds are wet and
slippery, and some ponds can
have in excess of one meter of
cold dirty water in them. The
officials are also requesting
the public stay away from the
Glenmore Dam spillway area
for safety reasons.
The waters in Fish Creek have
also risen dramatically in the
last two days and officials
from the Provincial Park are
advising that all pedestrian
bridges in the park are closed
and banks along the creek
are extremely dangerous.
There are multiple areas of
bank along the creek that
have collapsed.
Compliance with these
safety messages is extremely
important in the protection
of the public as well as the
rescue personnel that have
to attend these emergency
incidents.

Fallece a los 78 años Hamilton Naki, cirujano autodidacta símbolo del ‘apartheid’
Hamilton Naki, Self-taught surgeon, symbol of ‘apartheid’ dies at 78
En diciembre de 1967, el Dr. Christian Barnard anunció al
mundo que el primer transplante de corazón entre humanos
se había realizado con éxito en el hospital Groote Schuur,
de Ciudad del Cabo. Nadie supo entonces que el peso de la
operación lo había llevado un hombre de raza negra, Hamilton
Naki. “Si hubieran publicado mi fotografía habría ido a la
cárcel. Así eran las cosas en aquel entonces”, recordaba Naki.
Naki falleció el pasado 29 de mayo a la edad de 78 años.
Durante casi cuarenta años, fue un auxiliar del hospital.
Hamilton Naki nunca terminó la escuela primaria. Entró en la
institución como jardinero, aunque pronto se dedicó a limpiar
las jaulas de los animales con los que el prestigioso cirujano
Barnard experimentaba en el campo de los transplantes. Poco
a poco, las habilidades de Naki llevaron a los médicos a
pedirle que manejara a los animales durante las operaciones,
luego que se hiciera cargo de la anestesia y finalmente, que
los operara. A partir de la observación, se convirtió en un
experto cirujano de manos precisas y firmes, sólo conocido
para los que compartían el quirófano con él. Ante la ley, era
el jardinero.
La noche del 3 de diciembre de 1967 fue Naki quien extrajo
el corazón de una mujer blanca, atropellada por un coche,
para que fuera trasplantado a otra mujer blanca, la primera
persona que recibió un corazón ajeno. Fue en el 2001 que
el Dr. Barnard antes de morir y una década después del fin
del apartheid, contara la historia verdadera. “Técnicamente,
él es mejor que yo”, afirmó
Barnard. En el 2002, se le
otorgó a Naki uno de los
reconocimientos más altos,
el ‘National
Order of
Mapungubwe’
y además de
un graduado
honorífico en
medicina por
la Universidad
de Ciudad del
Cabo. Naki
trabajó hasta
1991 se
jubiló con una
pensión de
226 euros al

No one
knew back
then that all
the surgery
responsiblity
was in a
black man’s
hand’s, Hamilton Naki. “If
they had published my
picture, I would have gone to
jail”. That’s how things were
back then”. Naki remembered.
He died on May 29 at 78.
For forty years he was a
hospital assistant.
Hamilton Naki never finished elementry school.
He landed in the institution as a gardener, although soon
enough he started to clean the animals cages, the ones with
what the prestigious surgeon, Dr. Barnard experimented in the
field of trasplants.
Little by little the skills of Naki were noticed by the doctors
and they started to ask Naki to handle the animals during
surgery, then they put him charge of the anaesthesia and
finally to perform surgery himself.
From just observation, he became an experienced surgeon of
precise and steady hands, only known for those who shared
the operating room with him. Before the law he was only a
gardener.
The night of Decembre 3, 1967 was Naki who removed the
heart of a white woman chest to be trasplanted onto another
white woman, the first person ever to receive a stranger‘s heart.
It was in 2001 that Dr. Barnard, before his dead and a decade
after the end of apartheid, that he told the real story.
In 2002 Naki was presented with one of the maximum
presidential awards, the “National Order of Mapungubwe’,
also the Honourary degree in Medicine from the University
of Cape Town. Naki worked until 1991, he retired on a 226
euros a month, pension he was entitled as a gardener.
“I can be happy now that everything is out. The light is lit and
the darkness has gone,” he said.

Bolivia’s Supreme Court
head, Eduardo Rodriguez,
was sworn as president, last
Friday June 10 paving the
way for an early election
aimed at ending unrest.
Congress endorsed the
caretaker leader late on
Thursday, after accepting
the resignation of President
Carlos Mesa.
Mr Rodriguez promised to
call a presidential election
soon.
He assumed the presidency
after the speakers of both
houses of Congress waived
their constitutional right to
become head of state.
Hours earlier, the army
shot dead a miner - the
first fatality in a month of
protests over Mr Mesa’s
handling of the country’s
gas reserves.
The mainly left-wing and
indigenous protesters
are demanding the
nationalisation of the
industry and constitutional
reforms to give greater
rights to the country’s
impoverished highlanders.
One of my tasks will be to
begin an electoral process,
Mr Rodriguez is Bolivia’s
third president in less than
two years.
His inauguration and the
prospect of an election
was hailed by protesters,
who have been holding
daily demonstrations and
blockades since last month.
“Bolivia deserves better
days,” Mr Rodriguez told
deputies.
“I am convinced that one of
my tasks will be to begin an

Una profesional activa, una latina que durante
años se ha esforzado por salir adelante. Una
nicaragüense universal: en las siguientes líneas
conocerá un poco más del trabajo de Lucía
Bermúdez, corredora de seguros, encargada
de vender planes educacionales, de retiro e
inversiones.
Lucía Bermúdez llegó a Canadá en 1987, y
desde que puso pie en Kamloops, B.C., se
puso a estudiar inglés. En menos de un año
se integraba a trabajar en Manulife Financial.
En Nicaragua, había estudiado Derecho en
la Universidad Centroamericana de Managua,
pero no lo ejerció, porque trabajaba en una
compañía de Seguros cuyo dueño era su
padre. Pero no sólo él y su hija se dedicaban
a ese rubro: también la madre madre y el
hermano vendían seguros.
Durante el tiempo que estuvo en Manulife,
se dió cuenta que necesitaba más inglés, “Es
indispensable el idioma porque asi aprendemos
a comunicarnos y podemos progresar”, cuenta
Lucía con profunda honestidad, mientras
recuerda esos años con una sonrisa.
Su siguiente paso fue estudiar para Asistente
Legal. Mientras lo hacía, cuidaba a sus dos
hijos, que en ese tiempo tenían doce y
cinco años respectivamente. Sólo Dios sabe
cómo hizo para multiplicarse. Se acostaba a
las cuatro de la mañana, tres horas después
se levantaba y se iba a las clases de inglés.
Tanto esfuerzo hasta que obtuvo la licencia
de seguros.
En la actualidad, Lucía trabaja siete días a la
semana y se siente muy satisfecha de sus logros
porque la mayoría de sus clientes son amigos.
Y como ella es una incansable perseguidora de
sueños, mientras estudia para vender seguros
comerciales, ya acaricia su siguiente sueño:
convertirse en Certified Financial Planner.
“La vida es sueño” decía Calderón de la Barca.
Y asi parece ser la vida de Lucía Bermudez, a
quien soñar la ha llevado donde está.

Lucia Bermudez came to Canada in 1987
and since she set foot in Kamloops, B.C, she
started to study English. In less than a year
she joing Financial Manulife.
In Nicaragua she a graduated from Law
School at Universidad Centroamericana de
Managua, but didn’t work as a lawyer because
she worked for an Insurance Company whose
owner was her father. Not only him and Lucia
worked there, her mother and brother also
were in the same field, selling insurance.
During the time she was in Mnulife, she realize

Her next step was becoming a Legal Asistant.
At the same time she was in school she took
care of her children, then only 12 and 5
years old. Only God knows how she multiply
herself. She used to go to bed at 4:00 in the
morning, three hours later she got up and
got herself ready for English clases. So much
effort until she earned her Insurance Licence.
Currently Lucia works seven days a week and
feels very proud of her achievments because
many of her customers become friends.
Because she is a tireless dream chaser and
currently studying commercial insurance, she
is already crasing her next dream: becoming
a Certified Financial Planner.

Lo que sí es obvio que últimamente la estabilidad en las tazas de interés y las diferentes opciones
ofrecidas por los bancos hacen que la compra de una casa deje de ser un sueño y se transforme en
realidad. Si usted tiene buen credito, sus taxes personales están al día y lleva trabajando en relación
de dependecia por un mínimo de 3 años, no importa cuánto sueldo declare lo único que necesita

la planificacion de la herencia
es un testamento (will) effectivo
y al día.
Desafortunadamente, una
encuesta reciente encontró que
sólo el 51% de los adultos de
Ontario tienen un testamento,
de ese número la mayoría
eran personas mayores que ya
perdieron al esposo(a). Eso
significa que muchos están
esperando demasiado antes de
hacer su testamento.
La mayoría de las personas
saben intituivamente que
deben de tener un testamento,

cuánto puede costar y del desagrado de pensar
en la propia muerte.
Existen razones importantes para tener un
testamento. En general, el testamento provee
una forma economica, exacta y ordenada de
transferir propiedad al momento de la muerte.
Más especícamente, permitirá al individuo a
decider quién ejecutará su voluntad, quién
recibirá ciertos montos de dinero o propiedad de
la herencia, y quien será el guardián de nuestros
dependientes.
Sin un testamento válido, éstas decisiones serán
tomadas por un juez de acuerdo a los términos
de los estatutos provinciales.

Unfortunately, a recent
survey found that only
51% of adult Ontarians
has a will, and that number
was heavily weighted
towards elderly persons
who have already lost a
spouse. This means too
many people are waiting
far too long before
considering their will.
Most people know
intuitively they are
supposed to have a will,
but they put it off because
of a lack of urgency,
confusion about the process, uncertainty
about cost, and the general unpleasantness
of contemplating one’s own demise.
But there are several important reasons to
have a will. In general, the will provides for
the economical, accurate and orderly transfer
of property on death. More specifically, a
will allows an individual to decide who will
be the executor, who will get any specific
items or amounts from the estate, and who
will be the guardian for any dependants.
Without a valid will, these decisions will be
made by a judge pursuant to the terms of a
provincial statute.

• Must have wide knowledge in the Latin American folk music history and especially in Colombian
music history.
• Candidate must demonstrate specific knowledge in the Colombian Folklore and be able to teach
rhythms like CUMBIA, JOROPO, SAN JUANERO, MAPALE etc and their differences.
• As dancer tutor the candidate will be able to give students a wide theory in matters related with
origin, development, dancing skills, body language and over all and the most important aspect;
the feeling folks used to communicate one another through the music and rhythms.
• Candidate also must have specific training accreditations (at least three years) from colleges,
academies or universities, in culture, arts, music, dancing or alike.The position is full time position,
8 hour daily from Monday to Friday (except holy days and statutory holidays). The hourly rate
is $15.00 CD. The length of the contract is for one year (expandable towards permanent if parts
