government with a new approach’

I am delighted to be delivering my first address as
Premier to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.
Because Calgary is vitally important to Alberta, and to
Canada, as a growing centre of commerce.
Calgary is also important to me on a personal level.
You know, during the leadership campaign there was a
running joke on our campaign bus about how I seemed
to be related to half of the people in the province.
And it’s no different in Calgary.
In fact, I’ve been in Calgary since last Friday and I’ve
spent a lot of time visiting my son and daughter-in-law,
and my first grandson.
My sister and brother-in-law have lived here for years,
as well as many other members of my family.
I have known Calgary for a long time, and soon,
Calgary will know me.
My first Christmas reception at McDougall was a great
start as over 250 people dropped by to say hi.
I was overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring
of good tidings and congratulations on becoming
Alberta’s Premier.
I made a point of holding our first Caucus Retreat,
here, in Downtown Calgary at McDougall Centre.
And I’m filling out a full schedule this week meeting
with Calgarians — including your good Mayor and
business groups like the Chamber and CAPP.
It’s been a whirlwind since early December — with
the swearing-in, government restructuring, cabinet
appointments, and generally getting settled in and up
to speed.
With your indulgence, I’d like to report to you how I
plan to serve you, and all Albertans, to achieve my
vision for:
* A higher standard of living;
* Greater opportunities for Albertans;
* And a better quality of life.
As I’ve said many times now, this is a new government
with a new approach.
I have reduced cabinet by 25% — from 24 to 18
Ministries to give Albertans a smaller, more effective
executive team.
My team has both rookies and veterans
You need fresh ideas, energy and enthusiasm that
new players bring.
And veterans to temper that enthusiasm with wisdom
and experience.
This will result in rational, inclusive decision making.
Renewal is important, especially when one party has
been given this trusteeship by Albertans for so many
years.
Albertans were looking for changes from within the
governing party.
This is no different than when Ralph Klein became
premier some 14 years ago.
It’s time, in 2007, to take a new approach again…
to reflect the realities of today, and the priorities of
Albertans today.
Financially, the province is debt free.
We’re enjoying great prosperity…
And facing unprecedented growth.
The past six years saw almost half a million people
come from other provinces — and yet our economy is
experiencing a critical shortage of people.
We need to address the immediate need for affordable
housing, skilled labour and infrastructure…
While ensuring that we protect our environment.
Our government’s plan for the next 18 months, will allow
us to act effectively in addressing these demands.
To achieve my vision we identified over 65 deliverables,
grouped into five priorities for government.
These deliverables were identified in letters to each
minister. These mandate letters are on the web so
Albertans can hold us accountable for the job we
agreed to do.
The five priorities my government will focus on are:
* governing with integrity and transparency;
* managing growth pressures;
* improving Albertans’ quality of life;
* building a stronger Alberta; and
* providing safe and secure communities.
To achieve these priorities I instituted a new structure
in government.
One of the most significant changes made was to
create the new Treasury Board Secretariat.
Essentially, the Department of Finance will now focus
on the macro economic policy questions of revenue
and overall budgeting.
Finance is headed by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Lyle
Oberg.
Minister Oberg’s job is to define the overall financial
policies of government to raise the revenues needed
to finance programs within a budgetary framework.
The Treasury Board Secretariat department is headed
by the Honourable Lloyd Snelgrove, and will provide
a more coordinated and disciplined approach to
government spending, staffing and capital planning.
It will make sure our plan for managing growth
pressures is affordable…
And that we do a better job of maintaining existing
infrastructure.
The secretariat will also ensure Albertans are getting
the best value possible for their tax dollar.
In short, there is a greater emphasis on planning and
controlled spending…
But the Minister responsible for Treasury Board also
has a mandate to ensure that government operations
are modernized, efficient and using technology to its
fullest potential.
The Government of Alberta is the largest multidepartmental
organization in this province — it must
be fiscally disciplined and it must be on the leading
edge of service delivery.

Saint Valentine - San Valentín
Who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?
Quién es este misterioso santo y por qué celebramos esta festividad?
What is the origin of our
Saint Valentine’s Day or
the Día de San Valentín
(also known as the Día
de los emamorados)
in Spanish? Just who
was Saint Valentine,
the patron saint of
lovers? Historians and
comparative lingüists are
not entirely sure among
which candidate (or
candidates) throughout
antiquity really was the
true Cupid among ancient
peoples. From the late
Latin februarius and then
vía the Old French février
comes the name of our
month of February in
modern English, or the
“month of expiation or
purification”. This was
in honor of the Roman
festival of purification
februa held on February
15th, their Lupercalia,
commemorating young
men’s rite of passage
to their God of fertility
Lupercus, who watched
over the shepherds of
Rome against predatory
lupus or wolves.
SAINT VALENTINE IN
THE ROMAN EMPIRE
The legendary Saint
Valentine out of ancient
times takes us back to the
3rd Century after Christ,
around 269 A.D. He was
a Roman priest or bishop
who empathized much
with the young Roman
centurions-to-be who
were about to be drafted
into military service.
When the Roman Empire
and legions needed
soldiers to protect their
ever-expanding territories
beyond the Rubicon,
Emperor Claudius II
decreed that nobody
could become engaged to
be married! The domestic
limelight and felicity of
the hearth for young and
able-bodied Roman boys
was not to Claudius II’s
liking. The Holy Emperor
had determined that
married men made poor
soldiers, so he banned
marriage altogether
from his Roman Empire.
But, the loving and kindhearted
Valentine openly
defied the Emperor’s
demand and married
off many a young
couple clandestinely
be candlelight in castle
basements and wine
cellars. Pope Gelasius
also disapproved of
Claudius’ custom and
decreed that a change
be made, but to no avail.
Since Roman Emperors
were considered to be
demi-Gods, Valentine’s
action was considered
to be an act of outright
treason against the
Imperio Romano and
defiance of heavenly law!
But Valentine continued
to marry young couples
secretly who came to
him, anyway. When
Claudius II discovered
Valentine’s illicit activities,
he tried to convert him
to Roman paganism at
first. Ultimately, so the
legend goes, Valentine
was imprisoned and put
to death by beheading
on the vespers of the
Feast of Lupercalia, on
February 14, 270 A.D.
Yet early church records
indicate that a number of
“Saint Valentines” during
such a febrile season were
beheaded and martyred
on or around February
the 14th. Another tale
tells us of a different
Valentine who was seized
by authorities for having
helped Christians escape
the wrath of the tyrannical
Claudius II. The jailor
happened to have a
beautiful, yet totally blind
daughter. Upon hearing
of this, it is said that
Valentine performed a
miraculous Divine healing
and restored her sight!
Though the pretty young
lady’s father, the jailor,
insisted on Valentine’s
release from the confines
of prison walls for his
otherworldly deed, he
was sent to the gallows
for execution anyway by
the cold, hard-hearted
Claudius II. Valentine,
before he was executed,
wrote and passed a short
note on to her that read:
“With love, from your
Valentine”. This was the
first written Valentine,
so the story goes, to be
written in the world.
Valentine was beheaded
on February 14th, on the
eve of the all important
Roman festival called
the Lupercalia. It is
indeed possible that
Valentine’s execution
formed part of a series of
entertainment activities
for the Romans along
with the persecuting of
Christians and their being
thrown into lion-filled pits
for their having drawn
the Roman youths away
from their gods of Janus,
Saturnus, and Solarus
in favor of their newly
discovered Savior. It is
said that on the evening
of February 15, 270 A.D.
during the Lupercalia
celebrations, Roman
youths drew names of
young ladies who were to
be their romantic partners
or “dates” not only for that
evening, but the girl thus
chosen would become
the sexual partner for
that young man for the
remainder of the year.
This served a double
purpose, for to draw the
name of a saint would
require that the boy or girl
would have to emulate
that saint’s qualities for
at least one year. This
was dutifully performed
in honor of their lovely
goddess Juno Februata.
And instead of a “pagan”
God to be chosen, the
Church searched for a
suitable substitute saint
to patronize the day.
So, Saint Valentine was
to become their chosen
saint.

This reflects much of what I heard from Albertans out on the
campaign trail…
And I know the business community can appreciate the need for
more fiscal discipline.
I’m sure many of you face the same challenge.
Another challenge I’m sure all of you can relate to is the labour
shortage.
And that’s why I created the new Ministry of Employment,
Immigration and Industry.
This ministry brings together several parts of government to better
coordinate economic development, immigration and labour force
planning.
We will also be working more closely with the federal government
to streamline the immigration and temporary foreign worker
processes.
Our aim is to attract immigrants to Alberta and get them to stay
here and raise their families.
Using what we know, and information from other provinces, this
new ministry will lead the development of a made-in-Alberta
solution.
Effective leadership requires delegation, but there are also some
tasks I’ve set for myself in my own department — Executive
Council, which of course I oversee. These tasks include:
* Establishing a Governance Review to provide recommendations
on how the government can improve transparency, accountability
and governance of its agencies, boards and commissions. And…
* Meeting with Opposition leaders to discuss the process for
democratic reforms and new working relationships.
Albertans, including yourselves, can hold me to these
commitments.
The new style of my government will be reflected in the respect
we have as a caucus for my first priority, Governing with Integrity
and Transparency.
I will deliver on my campaign promise.
Alberta will have legislation for a lobbyist and contractor registry
by the end of Spring Session.
This is something that people have been advocating for a long
time — and I agree with them.
And we’ll move on democratic reforms including all-party
committees.
I believe all parties should look for opportunities to work together,
where appropriate, to better serve Albertans.
And hopefully, you will hear of lots of small changes that will signal
a change in the tone of government.
It is a privilege to serve Albertans and to earn your trust and
respect.
After our cabinet planning session next week we will have a clear
business agenda as we head into the upcoming session.
The agenda includes;
* A task force on affordable housing,
* A Land Use Framework to balance economic, environmental
and recreational needs of Albertans — while strengthening
environmental protection,
* A comprehensive energy strategy,
* Infrastructure development and maintenance,
* Productivity in health care,
* Ensuring government policies reflect the needs of persons
with disabilities,
* Recognizing the value of the voluntary sector to our society,
* And an open, transparent review of the resource royalty regime.
The review committee will report their findings to the Minister of
Finance.
We all know how important the energy sector is to the well-being
of this province — and to all Albertans.
A strong and balanced royalty and tax regime means a strong
Alberta.
And by balanced, I mean what’s fair to both industry — which is
making tremendous investments in a volatile marketplace — and
to Albertans, who own the resources.
At the end of the review all Albertans will be confident that we
have the right regime in place.
One which encourages investment and which pays optimal
economic dividends to Albertans as owners of these resources.
There are many exciting initiatives to talk about.
And one thing I know Mayors are very keen on: a long-term
funding arrangement with municipalities.
An arrangement which is sustainable and recognizes the
challenges municipalities have in raising revenues to provide
essential services.
An arrangement which will help municipalities address the
challenges they are experiencing by being on the front lines of this
tremendous growth.
Looking at the commitments made under our five priorities, it’s
clear this government has a big mandate in front of it.
But it’s also an exciting one.
Over the next year I’m sure you’ll get to know me — and my team
— better.
I am a believer in teamwork — it is the only way to overcome great
obstacles.
A great example of this kind of cooperation and teamwork is the
Calgary Committee to End Homelessness.

Here you have corporate and community leaders — and municipal,
provincial and federal governments — teaming up to tackle a
problem.
I recently received a letter from Brian O’Leary, chairman of the
Calgary Homeless Foundation, inviting people to participate in the
long-term plan for the Calgary Homelessness Committee.
And I was impressed with the spirit of Brian’s letter that offered
assistance to my government’s provincial affordable housing
initiatives.
Brian’s offer to my government was: any and all research,
resources and expertise the Calgary Homeless Foundation can
offer on affordable housing and homelessness.
That spirit of cooperation is what we all need as we tackle today’s
challenges.
I’ve talked a lot today about a new style of government.
Obviously you’ll be seeing a new and different style of Premier
too.
I’ll be working hard to serve Albertans.
And that means traveling around Alberta to meet and discuss
issues with people in their own communities.
And by listening and acting decisively, I know I’ll continue to earn
your trust and friendship.
I wish you all great success in the coming year.

Joe Arroyo es la atracción principal, después de

correspondiente.
Estamos haciendo todo lo necesario para
asegurar el éxito de este evento que incluso para
nuestro asombro, ha generado una expectativa

En las tardes, mientras coreaba sus
primeras letras, Alvaro José vendía
latones llenos de agua a los vecinos
para ayudar al sustento de su casa. Era
la época en que se le conocía como el
“Cantante de Tarro”, porque metía la
cabeza entre las latas y así entonaba
sus cantos para autoescucharse.
ALVARO JOSE ARROYO GONZALEZ,
nació en Cartagena el 1 de noviembre
de 1955, hijo de Guillermo Arroyo y su
segunda esposa Angela González . Se
inició en el canto a los 8 años de edad
cuando llevó a cabo una presentación
en el colegio Santo Domingo en la
heroica.
Allí lo conoció “Mincho” Amaya, profesor
de piano y director del conjunto que
tocaba en el hotel Americano, quien lo
llevó a trabajar como cantante durante
4 años. Su voz aguda y llena de son
impacto de tal forma, que el JOE recibió
una oferta para ir a cantar a un grill del
barrio La Terca, ubicado en la zona de
tolerancia de Cartagena. Así se produjo
el paso de Alvaro José a JOE , ídolo del
mundo bajo, prostitutas, vagabundos
y bohemios. Sobre su voz un crítico
afirmaba: “... contiene un timbre y una
tonalidad que podría ser la síntesis
entre la guarachera de Cuba, Celia
Cruz y Joe Cuba, superando a veces
la vocación sonera de éstos. En torno
a la improvisación, el JOE posee un
carisma envidiable, pues sus versos
fluyen libres y espontáneos.
El JOE además se da el lujo de
juguetear con las escalas cromáticas
saltando rápidamente de una nota
alta a una nota baja y viceversa. Su
música es una mezcla enriquecedora
alimentada por elementos caribeños,
africanos y colombianos. Una
explosión de ritmos catalogada incluso
por las más prestigiosas revistas del
mercado musical norteamericano,
como irresistible. Una tarde fresca
de septiembre de 1993 al finalizar la
tarde el murmullo tomaba más vida: EL
JOE ARROYO murió por sobredosis.
La noticia transcendió las fronteras,
Televisa en México y Innovación en
la Florida, repetían incesantemente:
ARROYO murió... por sobredosis.
Afortunadamente todo fue producto de
la mala información y ni siquiera el JOE
lo entendía. El único objetivo de JOE
por entonces, pesar de todo, era llegar
a la fama. Por eso se escapó de su
casa junto al NENE REAL (el nene y
sus traviesos) y se fue a Barranquilla.
Allí formó parte de la orquesta de Micky
y acto seguido de la protesta, eso sí,
cantando siempre sin zapatos y con
muchas argollas para llamar la atención
del público. A los 14 años, con su voz
aguda, ya era cantante de Fruko y sus
tesos y le componía “negro Chombo” a
un padre que lo abandonó al nacer.
En los 80 decide formar su propia
orquesta y se lo comenta a Fruko.
De esto pasó un año y el proyecto
no se concretaba. Por tal razón sus
compañeros le molestaban la vida, le
decían que la orquesta debería llamarse
la mentira, ya que la anunciaba todos
los días y hasta ese momento no
pasaba nada. Después de ir y venir
finalmente apareció en el medio artístico
la famosa orquesta de La Verdad, el
gran sueño de JOE. El 7 de septiembre
de 1983, Alvaro José pesaba 42 kilos,
su historia...
casi inmóvil, permanecía acostado. Un
problema de hipertiroidismo aumentó
en la función de la glándula tiroides.
Se encontraba en estado crítico,
acentuando por los excesos (rumbas,
dietas, cansancio y sobre todo estrés).
Aunque consciente pasaba días y
noches sudando copiosamente con
fiebre que sobrepasaba los 40 grados,
sin dejar de temblar.
En el hospital no creían en su
recuperación. El tratamiento a
seguir era muy fuerte. Tan sólo 72
horas le auguraban, sin embargo le
hicieron un trabajo especial a base de
reconstituyente para fortalecerlo. Tres
días pasaron sin evolución alguna. Sólo
al décimo día, mostró un poco de fuerza
y su mirada vidriosa arrojaba algo de
vida. Realmente era un milagro que los
médicos no explicaban. Continuaron
con un tratamiento a base de yodo
radioactivo que le evito una cirugía de
tiroides con la que posiblemente hubiera
perdido la voz. El 23 de octubre le dieron
de alta y aunque tuvo complicaciones
para cancelar la cuenta, por fin logro
salir de su trago más amargo.
En una noche de brujas, un reconocido
empresario Barranquillero “El Capitán
Visball”, organizó una fiesta con Oscar
de León y otros músicos colombianos,
pero el venezolano no se presentó por
ser el mes del artista nacional. Entonces
Marcos Barraza, representante y
amigo de entraña de JOE, ofreció su
protegido, quien aún convaleciente
aseguraba cantar en dicha tarima. Así
aconteció y al otro día tomaron un bus
destino Barranquilla. El espectáculo
había agotado las entradas fue una
noche de contrastes, alegría y triunfo
a pesar del sufrimiento, todo parecía
un milagro. “no soy fanático pero por
toda ésta experiencia me di cuenta de
que existe un ser supremo. Seguro que
sí; por eso digo que ‘a mi Dios todo
le debo’”. Resulta de los anterior que
los temas de JOE no son caprichosos
todos están vinculados a experiencias
propias: “Me la fugué a la candela,
echao pa’adelante y otro de su espíritu
noctámbulo como la noche, centurión
de la noche, etc.”
LA CONSAGRACION Vino de ésta
forma el Carnaval de Barranquilla de
1984, donde obtuvo el Congo de Oro
al lado de Juan Piña y desde allí ha
repetido sucesivamente todos los años.
Debido a esto se creó el Supercongo
especialmente para él. 1989, fue un año
plasmado también por éxitos. A finales
logró participar en la fiesta de Cali,
donde obtuvo el trofeo a mejor orquesta
y cantante. Posteriormente su gira por
Europa fue todo un acontecimiento a
tal punto que la British Broadcasting
Corporation, compro la exclusividad de
sus videos.
El JOE no ha considerado ningún
ascenso, todos se han presentado
naturalmente, por sus virtudes. Su
música ha llegado hasta el Africa, donde
sonó muy bien su tema “yamulemao”.
En nuestro continente, no hay que mirar
muy lejos para apreciar la dimensión del
JOE en países vecinos como Ecuador y
Perú. Atrás quedaron los años de pena,
ahora sólo le acompañan la gloria, la
que siempre imaginó y hoy lo hace uno
de los interpretes más importantes de
nuestra cultura.

Amor es... como comenzo todo
This February 14th, 2007, St Valentines Day, will
be the 37th anniversary of the Love is.. feature
which was originally created by Kim Casali as a
way of expressing her feelings for her husband,
Roberto. Those drawings and sentiments grew
into the famous syndicated panels of the little
naked boy and girl, first launched in The Los
Angeles Times in 1970. And in 1975 Bill Asprey
was picked by the creator, Kim Casali and her
husband Roberto to take on producing the
cartoons.

‘Barber
of Seville’
back in Edmonton

Even people who don’t
normally attend opera
are likely familiar with
Rossini’s The Barber of
Seville.
Yes, folks, this is indeed
the one where the baritone
belts out, “Figaro, Figaro,
FEEEEgaROH!”
Considered by many to be
the greatest of all comic
operas, the plot and
melodies of The Barber
of Seville have been
featured in numerous
films, TV shows and
commercials.
The opera has even
earned a vaulted spot in
pop culture - thanks to
the hilarious Bugs Bunny
cartoon, The Rabbit of
Seville. “Welcome to my
shop, let me cut your
mop, let me shave your
crop,” sang the Oscarwinning
rabbit.
As did Michael Cavanagh,
who is directing The
Barber of Seville for
Edmonton Opera, which
opens tomorrow night
at the Jube for three
performances.
Of course, Cavanagh only
sang that spoof over the
phone to me during an
interview (which certainly
dispels any notion of
opera types being elitist,
doesn’t it?) to make a
point: that a lot of people
know Barber of Seville
through Bugs Bunny.
“The animators of Bugs
Bunny absolutely picked
that opera because of
its cartoon style,” said
Cavanagh. “It just lends
itself naturally, because
Bugs Bunny and other
standard archetypal
cartoon caricatures are
all pulled out of traditional
theatre characters - the
comedia d’arte.”
Rossini wrote the opera
as entertainment, added
Cavanagh.
“And like the best
entertainments, the best
animated features or
comedies, the humanity
of the characters is woven
throughout. Amongst all
the tomfoolery there’s
some really lovely things
to say about how we
interact with human
beings.”
The plot runs as follows:
Count Almaviva wants to
marry beautiful Rosina,
but first he must outwit
her guardian, Bartolo.
Enter the scheming and
mischievous barber.
Figaro soon sets in motion
a complicated series of
chicanery and deception
set to some of opera’s
most unforgettable tunes.
“Peter Dala is a great
conductor, so the musical
is going to be zippy and,
of course, the Edmonton
Symphony Orchestra
plays it beautifully,” said
Cavanagh.
Rossini was a tunesmith
foremost.
“He absolutely knew a
melody and the hits just
keep on coming. There’s
some beautiful arias,
duets and big production
numbers. And the
production has got this
sun-baked charm. The
sets and costumes are
fabulous. They’re bright
and vivid and colourful,”
he said.
The former artistic director
of Edmonton Opera
(1998-2001), Cavanagh
is also excited to return
to the city after a six-year
absence.
“I loved my time here, and
I’ve been looking forward
to this for a long time. The
opera is one I’ve done
a bunch of times before
and always had a great
time with it, more or less
because of the quality of
the cast. And this is a
terrific one.”
The cast includes
Gregory Dahl, John
Tessier, Theodore Baerg,
Krisztina Szabo, Renee
Brad, Thomas Goerz and
Keith O’Brien.
Some 200 years after
its debut, The Barber of
Seville is the fifth most
performed opera in North
America. The animators
of Bugs Bunny were not
alone in their passion for
this opera. Verdi loved it,
too. And Beethoven even
begged Rossini to “give
us more Barbers.”
Audiences traditionally
have a lot of fun watching
performances of The
Barber of Seville.
“It is unbridled fun,” said
Cavanagh, who has
written, produced and
directed operas on stages
across North America.
“It’s one of the few operas
in which nobody dies,
nobody is dragged to
Hell - and there’s really
no dark side to it. Even
the so-called villains of
the piece are likable,” he
laughed.
“You just pay your money,
sit in the chair - and let
your terrors of the day
melt away.”
The Barber of Seville is
sung in Italian with English
supertitles. It plays
tomorrow night at 8, and
Tuesday and Thursday
evenings at 7:30 at the
Jubilee Auditorium.

Cancelan vuelos de
Canadá tras muerte de
turista en Acapulco
Acapulco.- Vuelos de Canadá a Acapulco fueron
cancelados luego de que familiares del turista
canadiense Adam de Prisco, quien presuntamente
murió atropellado en este puerto, hicieron una
campaña negativa de este lugar, señalaron agencias
de viajes.
Sandy Gagliano, direc-tora de Desarrollo de la agencia
canadiense My Travel, señaló que la muerte del
canadiense, presuntamente arrollado afuera de una
discoteca, ha ocasionado una crisis en los mayoristas
que ofrecen viajes hacia el puerto.
Detalló que De Prisco pertenecía a la comunidad italocanadiense,
que es uno de los princi-pales mercados
de su agencia de viajes en Canadá y también afecta
a empresas como Sunquest.
Confirmó que la aerolínea Signature, que realiza
charters de Canadá a Acapulco, cancelará sus vuelos
desde Calgary, previstos para el 14 de febrero, debido
a las bajas ventas.
La suspensión de vuelos también fue confirmada
por la gerente de Ventas del hotel Playa Suites,
Marilú Saldaña Mendoza, quien dijo que las
empresas Conquest, Sunwing, My Travel y Go Travel
Direct suspendieron los vuelos semanales que se
prolongarían hasta abril.
Calculó que con la cancelación de los vuelos dejarán
de llegar a este puerto cerca de tres mil 600 turistas
canadienses, causando pérdidas eco-nómicas por
tres millones 780 mil dólares.
Vía telefónica desde Canadá, Gagliano indicó a
Notimex que los familiares “están esperando la
necropsia y así saber qué pasó en realidad” y
acusaron que las autoridades ministeriales en lugar
de ahondar en la investigación, “sólo les pidieron
dinero”.
La necropsia practicada a De Prisco señala que la
causa de la muerte fue por atropellamiento, según
autoridades locales.
Sin embargo, de acuerdo a un amigo del canadiense,
ambos salieron a divertirse, pero Adam estuvo
bailando con la novia de un acapulqueño. El equipo
de seguridad lo sacó del lugar y cuando su amigo
salió a buscarlo, lo encontró tirado cubierto de sangre
y rodeado de piedras.
Los hechos de violencia en el puerto también han
afectado las reser-vaciones para la tempo-rada de
spring breakers, que en el mismo lapso del año
pasado ya tenían el 90 por ciento apartado, sin
embargo en el 2007 apenas alcanzan 65 por ciento.

from Spanish side Real Madrid for £4.95m on an
18-month deal
Milan will pay a further £330,000 for the 30-yearold
if they qualify for the Champions League in
2007 or ‘08.
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted Ronaldo,
out of favour at Real this season, was “not
particularly fit”, but added: “He remains a great
player.”
Ronaldo set a record for goals scored in World
Cups in Germany last year, but was criticised for
being overweight.
Ronaldo, who has won two World Cups with
Brazil and been named Fifa World Player of the
Year three times, has already passed a medical
in Milan.
He had 18 months left on his Real Madrid
contract and cost £20m when he joined the
Bernabeu outfit from Inter Milan in 2002. He has
started only three league matches under new
coach Fabio Capello this season.
Ancelotti said Ronaldo had lost fitness because
“having been excluded from the Real squad, he
has lost some of his enthusiasm in training”.
The two clubs appear to have come to a
compromise on price after Milan vice-president
Adriano Galliani said after meeting Real officials
on Monday: “We have offered seven million
euros (£4.6m) and Real want eight (£5.3m).”
The former Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona
and Inter forward had also been linked with AC’s
Italian rivals Juventus and a move to Al Ittihad in

odia los tributos
El yucateco asegura que es una
persona huraña y modesta
SANTO DOMINGO (AP). A sus 72 años,
Armando Manzanero se define como un hombre
modesto, bastante huraño y que aborrece los
homenajes.
Me caen mal los tributos, a menos que se traten
de grandes amigos míos a los que considero
talentos , manifestó Manzanero al periódico
Listín Diario .
El autor de Esta tarde vi llover se describió
como un tipo huraño; no me gusta la soledad,
sino la intimidad, estar con la gente que quiero
y que amo .
El compositor también defendió la música
romántica y aunque no quiso hablar sobre el
futuro del reggaetón, sostuvo que es música
festiva, no para enamorados.
No creo que ninguna pareja del mundo,
aunque tengan 25 años de casados, celebren
un momento importante con un reggaetón ,
manifestó Manzanero.
Acepta la evolución Sin embargo, Armando
Manzanero aclaró que está abierto a los cambios
y aceptó que todas las épocas tienen su tipo de
música, la única cosa que uno tiene que tener en
cuenta es que hay dos cosas, una es la buena,
que se quedará para siempre, y otra la mala,
que cumple su cometido y luego se va , añadió.
El intérprete de Adoro argumentó que todos
los años canta en países como República
Dominicana, donde el 14 de febrero tiene

reunite for
Grammy gig
The Police are to reunite and perform at the
Grammy Awards next month - more than 20
years after the release of their last album.
Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers
will open the 49th Grammy Awards in Los
Angeles on 11 February.
The band - who had hits with Every Breath
You Take and Roxanne - last performed
together in 2003.
The Police, who never officially parted before
pursuing solo projects, had been rumoured
to be planning a comeback.
The band started out in 1977, and had their
first number one hit, Message in A Bottle,
two years later.
They released their fifth, and last, album
Synchronicity, which featured songs Every
Breath You Take and Wrapped Around Your
Finger.
‘Massive news’
They last performed together in celebration
of their 2003 induction into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame.
Music journalist Chris Salmon said their
reunion was “massive news”.
“There are definitely some bands who said
they wouldn’t reform until hell freezes over
and The Police were one of those bands,”
he said.
“I don’t think anyone who likes them or
loves them would have considered this
would happen.
“It’s 30 years since The Police formed -
and that anniversary gives you a bit of an
excuse.
“I suppose people start to think about
legacy and Sting perhaps wants people to
remember he’s not this bland tantric sexlover,
and that he once fronted this amazing
rock group.”
The trio, who won five Grammys in their
1980s prime, join a live performance lineup
that already includes Justin Timberlake,
Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, and the Red Hot
Chili Peppers.

Mujeres forzadas a
esterilizarse ganan

LIMA, (IPS) El diputado electo y ex ministro
de Salud del régimen peruano de Alberto
Fujimori (1990-2000), Alejandro Aguinaga,
tendrá que compartir el recinto legislativo
con la dirigente campesina Hilaria Supa
Huamán, quien lo denunció por promover la
esterilización forzada de cientos de miles de
mujeres.
Supa, que ocupará un escaño de Unión por
el Perú --el partido que apoyó al candidato
presidencial nacionalista Ollanta Humala-
-, denunció legalmente a Aguinaga, electo
por la fujimorista Alianza por el Futuro, por
impulsar un programa de esterilización
forzada que privó del derecho a ser madres
a 363.000 mujeres peruanas.
Hoy el caso está en manos del fiscal
especializado en derechos humanos Héctor
Villar. Fuentes de su despacho aseguraron
a IPS que el magistrado se encuentra
precisando las responsabilidades de las
ex autoridades sanitarias para formular la
acusación.
Cuando Supa efectuó la denuncia, durante
el gobierno de Fujimori, no imaginó que
su liderazgo por defender los derechos de
las mujeres de Cusco, sur del país, fuera a
llevarla tan lejos. Hoy, esta madre, indígena,
pobre y que se comunica en quechua,
comparte la misma posición de congresista
que Aguinaga.

LIMA, (IPS) - Congressman-elect Alejandro
Aguinaga, a former health minister during the
Alberto Fujimori administration (1990-2000), will
have to share the legislative chamber with rural
activist Hilaria Supa Huamán, who has denounced
him for promoting the forced sterilization of
hundreds of thousands of Peruvian women.
Supa, who will occupy a seat representing Union
for Peru -- the party that supported the presidential
candidacy of nationalist Ollanta Humala -- formally,
accused Aguinaga, elected by the pro-Fujimori
Alliance for the Future, of promoting a forced
sterilization program which deprived 363,000
Peruvian women of their right to motherhood.
The case is currently in the hands of prosecutor
Héctor Villar, who specializes in human rights.
Sources at his office told IPS that the magistrate
is detailing the responsibility of the former health
authorities in order to present charges.
When Supa lodged the accusation during
Fujimori’s administration, she never imagined that
her leadership in defence of the rights of women
in Cusco, in the south of the country, would take
her so far. Today, this poor, indigenous, Quechuaspeaking
mother is a member of Congress, just
like Aguinaga.
Aguinaga said he could not recall who Supa was
when IPS asked him about the rural women’s
leader from Cusco.
“I have just heard that she has been elected
to Congress,” he said. “No doubt we will have
the opportunity to talk. What Peru needs now is
development policies and not to keep harping on
about the same things (the forced sterilisations),
that have already been cleared up and shelved.”

Desde Red Deer: Chura la voz magnética
En la Vat Pub
Se realizó un evento con Chura, la voz magnética y
su guitarrista, Raymond Hanson, con la asistencia de
varios latino y canadiense amigos que gustan de la
musica hispana.
Chura, la cantante, autora y compositora de origen
colombiano, ha terminado su segunda grabación. El
disco compacto se titula “Dejen Vivir Mi Vivi”.
Muy pronto va a ser lanzado a la venta, Chura les
da las gracias a la directora de este diario, Venus
Ergon, por su apoyo y colabortación. También les da
las gracias a todos los que asistieron al evento en La
Vat Neighbourhood Pub. Al mismo tiempo aprovecho
de darle las gracias a la dueña de La Vat, Terry Cave,
mi asistencia personal, y fotógrafa Constance Stautd,
admisión y atención en la puerta, Anna Laliberte. El
show fue de 2 etapos: 8:30 pm a 10:30 pm. Se realiz

Humans blamed for
climate change

Global climate change is “very likely” to have a human cause, an
influential group of scientists has concluded.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said
temperatures were probably going to increase by 1.8-4C (3.2-
7.2F) by the end of the century.
It also projected that sea levels were most likely to rise by 28-
43cm, and global warming was likely to influence the intensity of
tropical storms.
The findings are the first of four IPCC reports to be published
this year.
“We can be very confident that the net effect of human activity
since 1750 has been one of warming,” co-lead author Dr Susan
Soloman told delegates in Paris.
Strong language
The report, produced by a team tasked with assessing the
science of climate change, was intended to be the definitive
summary of climatic shifts facing the world in the coming years.
The agency said that it would use stronger language to assess
humanity’s influence on climatic change than it had previously
done.
In 2001, it said that it was “likely” that human activities lay behind
the trends observed at various parts of the planet; “likely” in
IPCC terminology means between 66% and 90% probability.
Now, the panel concluded that it was at least 90% certain that
human emissions of greenhouse gases rather than natural
variations are warming the planet’s surface.
They projected that temperatures would probably rise by
between 1.8 C and 4C, though increases as small as 1.1C (2F)
or as large as 6.4C (11.5F) were possible.
In 2001, using different methodology, the numbers were 1.4
(2.5F) and 5.8C (10.4F).
On sea level, there has been a more fundamental debate.
Computer models of climate do not generally include water
coming into the oceans as ice caps melt. So the IPCC had
to decide whether to exclude this from its calculations, or
to estimate the effect of a process which scientists do not
understand well but which could have a big impact.
They used the former, more conservative approach, projecting
an average rise in sea levels globally of between 28 and 43cm.
The 2001 report cited a range of nine to 88cm.
As for climate change influencing the intensity of tropical storms
in some areas of the world, the IPCC concluded that it was
likely - meaning a greater probability than 66% - that rising
temperatures were a factor.the findings marked a historical
landmark in the debate about whether humans were affecting
the state of the atmosphere.
