Province to tackle galloping growth

n his first major speech as Alberta’s premier,
Ed Stelmach said yesterday that the province’s
galloping growth has come at a steep price that
will be revealed in next week’s budget.
“There is a price to prosperity, a substantial
price, as you will see,” Stelmach said in a speech
delivered to those attending the annual premier’s
dinner at the Shaw Convention Centre.
He said Edmonton will get help.
“Edmonton will see a major share of the $1.4
billion I’ve committed to municipalities to assist in
meeting those escalating demands.”
Stelmach said the province is dealing with
double-digit growth hikes virtually across the
board, leading to job and housing shortages and
concerns about quality of life.
“We need stable funding for municipalities, for
capital projects, and we need to provide for the
maintenance of public infrastructure,” he said.
“Next week’s budget will address those issues in
a responsible and decisive manner.”
The budget is set to come down April 19.
“Day-to-day growth pressures land at the foot
of our local governments, and they need help in
dealing with that.”
Stelmach, who became premier in December by
winning the party race to replace outgoing leader
Ralph Klein, said his government is already
making strides to ease the growth pressures
elsewhere.
He noted the province has committed $400
million for water and sewage treatment and
affordable housing in Fort McMurray, the centre
of Alberta’s thundering oilsands economy.
Growth pressures in cities like Grande Prairie
have placed an intolerable strain on its hospital
and forced a replacement to be fast-tracked.
“I’m pleased to tell you that this project will begin
this year. We’ll be making a formal announcement
next week,” said Stelmach.
The province, he added, is also close to signing a
deal with the federal government to give Alberta
more direct control over immigration.
“A deal will mean less red tape for Alberta
business, and faster entry for the workers we
need.”
Stelmach said they continue to press for
recognition of overseas credentials to fill job
vacancies.
The premier also re-emphasized initiatives
to govern, in his words, with “integrity and
transparency.”
Among the initiatives are a lobbyist registry and
a promise to bring in a conflict of interest act for
those leaving government to work in the private
sector.
“Some say it goes too far; others that it doesn’t
go far enough,” he said of the lobbyist registry.
“But the bottom line is that there will be more
transparency than ever before,” the premier
said.

Soaring gas prices could bode well for Alberta’s tourist
playgrounds, drawing locals who may opt to abandon
roadtrips afar, with many officials across the province
looking forward to a healthy travel season.
Banff Mayor John Stutz said he’s hopeful the
skyrocketing price at the pump will encourage more
people to renew their interest in the small mountain
town and surrounding areas.
“I’m sort of optimstic it might actually work in our
favour, particularly to regional tourists,” he said.
“Banff is a very, very affordable drive for Calgarians.”
Stutz said the tourist town 110 km west of Calgary
won’t suffer greatly from a potential dip in out-ofprovince
visitors, noting that Albertans make up about
50% of Banff’s annual tourists.
But others aren’t as optimistic about a healthy summer
tourist season in light of the predicted gas hikes,
which could see motorists forking out as much as
$1.25 a litre in the coming months, according to some
analysts.
Drumheller Mayor Bryce Nimmo fears the surge in fuel
costs could force many tourists — Canadian and in
the U.S. — to stay home.
“I don’t think there’s any question that it will cut back
on travelling all over,” he said.
“If I was thinking about taking a major trip, I’d be
thinking long and hard about it because it’s going to
cost you 25% more to make that trip.”
Yet Travel Alberta spokesman Don Boynton said in
the past gas prices have had little impact on holiday
decisions.
“People are still willing to travel for vacations,” he
said.
“We’re looking forward to a pretty healthy season.”

pregunto si viviría para
celebrar la Navidad. Le
habían extirpado los
ganglios linfáticos junto
con los músculos del lado
izquierdo del cuello y
respiraba por un agujero
que le habían abierto en
el pecho. Estaba muy
flaco (en los huesos) y
sentía un dolor que lo
atormentaba sin tregua.
A consecuencia de estas
operaciones quedo mudo
Padecía Cáncer. El
medico le dijo “su caso
es un ejemplo típico de
las consecuencias que
sufre un fumador”. Este
hombre era un abogado
que defendía los derechos
del “Instituto del Tabaco
en EE.UU.”
Para defender a sus
protegidos tenia un truco
que consistía en atacar
al oponente en el debate
diciendo, “aun no se han
demostrado claramente
los daños a la salud”, y
“lo que viene al caso es
la “libertad de expresión”
Recordó las innumerables
veces que había llamado
“fascistas de la salud” a
quienes querían delimitar
zonas especiales donde
poder fumar en los
lugares públicos y las
iniciativas de ley que
había neutralizado en
aras de los “derechos de
fumadores”
Este abogado tenía una
gran simpatía, reconocido
y lo pagaban muy
bien. Tenía un puesto
envidiable. Estaba contratado
por la compañía de
Tabacos para ganar a
todo trance y dice “yo
deseaba ganar”. Llego a
percibir 200 dólares por
hora.
El combatía todo proyecto
de ley encargado de
reducir el consumo de
cigarrillos y promovió
aquellos que favorecieran
el tabaquismo y reportara
utilidades a la industria.
Pensó en la gran
cantidad de dinero que
había ganado con ello
y en lo poco que eso
le importaba ya. Me lo
merezco, se dijo pero a
“nadie más” tiene que
pasarle lo mismo.
Empezó una nueva ley
que prohibía fumar en
los ascensores. Este
abogado logro modificar
una nueva ley que
consistía en que se podía
multar al trasgresor si
fumaba en presencia de
un policía uniformado.
Había sido durante
Enero de 1971 cuando
el sintió un inmenso dolor
en el lado izquierdo del
cuello. Un medico le dijo
que se trataba de una
arteria inflamada y le

receto esteroides pero,
la molestia persistió. Al
cabo de casi un ano una
biopsia revelo que sufría
Cáncer en la garganta
y para 1993 el mal se
le había extendido a los
huesos, los pulmones y
el hígado.
La radioterapia y los
medicamentos hicieron
retroceder la enfermedad,
lenta y muy dolorosa. El
enfermo se encontraba
en estado de remisión
cuando un encuentro
casual dejo una honda
huella en su vida.
Actualmente esta persona
ha sufrido una nueva
recaída (esta vez le ha
aparecido Cáncer en la
cadera) y no sabe cuanta
vida le queda.
Ahora el dice que el
cigarro es un asesino.
Nada le importa cuantas
personas ha matado
hasta ahora el tabaco
mas el dice “hoy solo me
interesa reparar el daño
que he hecho” “quiero
disuadir a los fumadores
para que no tengan que
sufrir como yo”
Quien diga que el cigarrillo
no causa adicción miente
o es un retrasado mental.
Una vez que se adquiere
el vicio es muy difícil
dejarlo voluntariamente

“cigarrillo” y el “tabaco”
En China mueren
cada ano 20 millones
de personas debido al
tabaco.
En Canadá fuma ahora el
30% de los habitantes y
en Chile el 60% (hombres
y mujeres)
Las compañías de
seguros venden sus
servicios de manera que
las personas que fuman
cigarrillos pagan al mes
$370.00 mas que las que
fuman tabaco en pipas
que pagan solamente
$300.00 Este se debe
a que el papel que
envuelve el cigarrillo es
mas nocivo.
Las personas que trabajan
y mantienen el cigarro
permanentemente en
su boca es más dañino
porque aspiran el humo
de la punta del cigarrillo.
En Canadá se pretende
prohibir fumar en los
bares porque se ha
comprobado que las
personas que no fuman
incluidos los jóvenes, se
enferman mas rápido que
los fumadores porque
ellos toman el humo
directo cuando que, el
fumador lo recibe desde
el filtro del cigarrillo.
Existen unas boquillas
que en su interior tienen
el mismo sistema que los
carburadores de autos.
Este sistema produce
que el humo al pasar a
mas velocidad dentro de
la boquilla se enfríe (la
nicotina queda dentro de
la boquilla y esta se llama
“Targard”)
Los árabes tienen un
especial sistema de
fumar. Este consiste en
que ponen en el centro
una gran pipa con varias
mangueras por donde
pueden fumar varias
personas a la vez. La
ventaja de este sistema
es que dentro de la pipa
(abajo) ponen agua
helada y eso sirve para
que detenga una gran
cantidad de nicotina.
Es menos nocivo el
fumar puros porque las
personas que lo hacen
no lo aspiran.
Sustituto de la
Nicotina:
“Nicoderm CQ”, produce
nicotina artificial que
sirve para contrarrestar
los síntomas de la
abstinencia producida al
dejar de fumar.
Es tan efectivo como
las pastillas de acción
prolongada para evitar la
angina de pecho
Quienes deben evitarlo:
mujeres embarazadas
y personas con enfermedades
cardiacas.
El parche es más
aconsejable que las
pastillas porque es más
suave para el hígado
Dos razones más para

Sordera. La exposición al
humo del tabaco puede
apresurar la sordera que
sobreviene con la edad.
En un estudio efectuado
durante dos anos y
medio con más de 3500
individuos entre 48 y
93 anos de edad unos
médicos observaron que
los fumadores corrían
un riesgo casi dos veces
mayor de padecer sordera
que quienes no fumaban.
Los científicos suponen
que el humo del tabaco
tiene un efecto toxico
sobre las células del oído
interno. Otros creen que
el daño se debe a que
el humo reduce el riego
sanguíneo en esa parte
del aparato auditivo.

riesgo de contraer el mal
de “Alzheimer” y otras

Otro de los danos del
cigarrillo es que muchas
personas comienzan
a fumar y por ahorro o
porque fuman poco se
fuman la mitad y después
lo apagan y guardan para
fumarlo posteriormente.
Los doctores dicen que
esa mitad guardada
es más dañina que el
fumar el cigarrillo entero
porque al prenderlo de
nuevo la Nicotina que
empezó a funcionar es
más venenosa
Dato rápido:
El Cáncer de pulmón es
el tercero más común
tanto en mujeres como
en hombres hispanos.
Piensa usted que los
cigarrillos “light” son
menos dañinos? Según
los estudios no lo son y
es posible que dificulten
aun más el dejar de
fumar. La gente fuma
con mas intensidad los
cigarrillos “light” y los
fuman en mayor numero
así es mas común que
fume mas allá del filtro
cuya función es limitar la
dosis de “carcinógenos”
Lo anterior socava su
supuesto beneficio y lo
que es peor es descubrir
que es mas difícil que
un fumador de esos
cigarrillos deje de fumar,
porque? Tal vez porque
cree que recibe menos
alquitrán y nicotina.
Según otros estudios
“multicentro” fumar “mentolado”
también reduce
las probabilidades de
dejar el habito. El mentol
puede inhibir la forma
en que se metabolice
la nicotina por lo que,
esta permanece en el
cuerpo por más tiempo,
favoreciendo la adicción.

He moved to Calgary in March 2005. He couldn’t find a job in his
field initially and gained work experience at the Calgary Chamber
of Commerce’s Business Centre for four months and then took a
position with Manpower Services for six months.
“The thing is people want to get on the same position that they
were back in their home countries as soon as they arrive and
that’s impossible,” said Guerra, who has been working for the
past six months as a business development executive with the
Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “There’s no way to get that. You
need to be aware that there’s a process that you need to follow
and maybe it will take time. One, two, three years. But that’s why
we moved here - for a long-term project.
“People need to get a job and be sure that that job will take
them to the next position. That’s the first thing. ... And then focus
yourself on where you want to be in the future let’s say one year,
two years, five years from now and then work on that. But don’t
expect getting the job that you want when you start. Maybe the
job that you have today is not the job of your dreams but it doesn’t
matter. People are only focused on the present and they don’t
look forward on what will happen in the future. ... It took me one
year to be in a good position to build a career to build a future and
I don’t think that’s a long time.”

part of the supply Chain.
Central and South America with its vast
untapped Resources have opened the doors
and being Explored by new exciting Mining
Companies such as Nayarit Gold Inc. NYG on
the Toronto Stock Exchange-Venture focusing
in Mexico for Gold and whatever else that can
be found such as as silver.
Aurelian Resources exploring in Ecuador for
Gold and Peru is becoming a Copper Haven

Come Celebrate Calgary’s Diversity
was the Theme of MultiCultural Gala
Night held at Jack Singer Concert
Hall March 25. Presented by India
Canada Association of Calgary and
Southern Alberta Heritage Language
Association it was an evening of
Music and Dances from around the
world with Canada First Nations,Car
ibbean,India,Ireland,Ukraine,Colom
bia and Chinese.
MC for the evening were CTV
Anchors Kirk Heuser and Nujima
Yaqzan and were eloquent and both
have great understanding of culture
and were MCs the previous year.
The Colombian Dance “El Mapale”
Colombian Dance Show focused
on a large Mask like figure towering
over the dancers and created a spirt
like Dance.
Dances from India are ritulistic from
the many regions of India and a gem
to enjoy. The dances are colorful
and lively accompanied by great
Colombian Dance
background music and designed
around thier way of life from Harvest
to Marriage.
Also a show favourite during any
cultural festival are the Irish Dancers.
Famed for thier tap dancing, thier
dancers from Junior to Senior
Dancers were just stage amazing
and more than appreciation from the
house. Longtime favourites were the
Chinese Orchestra which has over
the years been a delight to hear and
enjoy in calmness.

Libro ‘La Nacion Mapuche’
Estimados amigos, compañeros, Pu Peñi ka
pu Lamgen, kompuche:
El objetivo de esta nota es para informarles
de la publicación en Chile de mi libro “La
Nación Mapuche-Puelmapu ka Gulumapu”
a cargo de la editorial Ayun.
Mi nombre es Victor M. Gavilan, Asistente
Social de profesión. Universidad de Chile,
sede Temuco - 1970. Más tarde trabajé en
el Departamento de Asuntos Estudiantiles
de la Universidad de Concepción en la Sede
Universitaria de Los Angeles. Al producirse
el golpe militar fui detenido, y encarcelado
por dos años en la Penitenciaria de Temuco,
para conmutar más tarde la pena, por la
de extrañamiento al Canada. Actualmente
trabajo como profesor de adultos, haciendo
clases de Ingles y Español como segunda
lengua con la organización CCIS ( Calgary
Catholic Immigration Society).
Mis antepasados estan ligados al Lonco
Pinto de Chihuayhue, quien en 1872 se unió
a las fuerzas del último Toki Mapuche Jose
Santo Quilapan en la provincia de Malleco,
para defender el territorio mapuche que
venia siendo ocupado por el ejército Chileno
a cargo de Cornelio Saavedra.
El libro es un aporte a la historia del
pueblo mapuche, comenzando en 1535
con la llegada de los primeros españoles
al territorio mapuche, hasta el año 2000,
con la lucha contra las forestales y las
usurpaciones de tierra a la comunidad
mapuche.He tratado de escribir un relato
más o menos cronológico de la larga lucha
de la guerra de Arauco, de las relaciones del
estado Chileno con los mapuche durante los
primeros 80 años del Chile independiente.
Tambien la historia avanza sobre la lucha
del pueblo mapuche contra la ocupación
militar de la Araucania por parte del gobierno
de Chile, entre los años 1860 y 1881. Más
adelante muestra la lucha parlamentaria de
los mapuche 1920 a 1950 hasta desembocar
en las acciones directas de corrias de cerco
por los años 1970 y finalmente las masivas
movilizaciones del pueblo mapuche por la
recuperación de sus tierras y los derechos
politicos de autonomia, y reconocimiento
constitucional por parte del Estado Chileno
y la aprobación del Convenio 169 de la
Organización Internacional del Trabajo
de las Naciones Unidas, sobre Trato y
Relaciones con los Pueblos Indigenas, que
Chile suscribió y aún no logra aprobarlo
en el Parlamento. El libro pretender ser un
aporte más a la construccion de la historia
del pueblo mapuche, desconocida para la
inmensa mayoria de los Chilenos y para las
nuevas generaciones de mapuche a objeto
de ayudar a desarrollar aún más los grados
de identidad social y cultural, tanto del
pueblo mapuche como tambien de nuestro
propio pueblo chileno.

Danza presented by Latin Corner Dance
Studio, Silverscreen and NA Dance Wear. It
was an evening showcasing Sexy Sensuous
Fashion,Belly Dancing,Capoeira Camara the
Brazilian Martial Art,Latin Corner Dance Group
and Rude Boys. Held at Art Space Gallery
at the Crossroads Market and benefiting Hull
Child & Family Services the evening was a total
success.
MC Cara Fullerton from Global TV was a delight
keeping patrons in that good ole party mood and
spirits high.
Following the Fashion and Entertainment Show,
Alex Bello a Latin Band from Dominica Republic
ignited the stage area and it was dance dance

of Calgary (SALCA) efectuo una presentacion con

LONG-STANDING
WOMEN’S SUPPORT GROUP
WHAT: Openings, one of Calgary’s
longest-standing support groups for
women from every walk of life, held
its first public fundraising event since
its inception in 1995.
The gala dinner called Awakening
the Goddess Within l featured guest
speaker, Jenica Ashlie, local author
of The Feminine Heart. In addition,
they had a silent auction, a fashion
show and extraordinary dance
performances.
The public enjoyed very much
the display of colours and the
professional dancers from several
academies in the Calgary area
WHEN: The event was held on
Saturday, March 24 at 6:30 pm at
WHERE: Glenmore Inn and
Convention Centre (2729 Glenmore
Trail SE). Openings is already
working on the next year gala which
will feature other cultural dances in
honoring our diverse community
WHO/WHY: Openings provides
seminars designed for women
to learn valuable techniques in
developing self-esteem in an
environment which makes them
feel empowered, connected,
acknowledged and appreciated.
Regular support meetings
allow participants to strengthen
connections with others, increase
their self esteem, and increase their
understanding of self responsibility
in their physical, emotional and
psychological wellbeing in a nurturing
environment.
The seminars and support groups
are offered, free of charge, in both
Spanish and English, and are
primarily run by volunteers, all of
whom are graduates of the program.
Openings has reached over 3500
women of all social, physical and
economic backgrounds.
Proceeds from the gala will support
the expansion of the program
throughout the city for youth and
seniors including offering the
program in other languages and
in more communities throughout
Calgary.
HOW: Tickets were $100 with a $60
tax receipt.

El sida tiene rostro de mujer
Buenos Aires, 16 de abril.- Cada minuto que
pasa 55 nuevas mujeres son contagiadas con
sida en Latinoamérica y el Caribe, consecuencia
directa del proceso de feminización de esta
epidemia, señalaron hoy en Argentina expertos
participantes en una reunión de mujeres líderes
de la región.
Más de 25 años después del inicio de la
enfermedad, “cada día más el sida es un rostro
de mujer”, coincidió en graficar la Coalición
de Primeras Damas y Mujeres Líderes en una
sesión previa al IV Foro Latinoamericano y del
Caribe, que comenzará mañana.
El porcentaje de mujeres adultas infectadas por
la enfermedad en todo el mundo ha pasado del
35 por ciento registrado en 1985 al 48 por ciento
en la actualidad.
Asimismo, más del 60 por ciento de los jóvenes
entre 15 y 24 años afectados por el sida son
mujeres.
En América Latina, el número de afectadas se
vio incrementado un 10 por ciento entre 2003 y
2006.
Cifras escalofriantes que dejan ver el preocupante
proceso de “feminización” de esta epidemia que
sólo durante el pasado año registró 140,000
nuevos afectados en Latinoamérica y causó
la muerte a 65,000 personas, comentaron los
expertos en la reunión.
El avance del sida entre la población femenina
se debe a la distribución desigual del poder
entre hombres y mujeres, a estereotipos y a
arraigados factores sociales y económicos que
dan lugar a una cultura de silencio alrededor del
sexo que impide la educación para la prevención
del contagio.
Una encuesta realizada en Brasil reveló que el
35.7 por ciento de los adolescentes de entre 16

y 19 años tomaba la iniciativa a la hora de usar
el preservativo, cifra que se incrementaba hasta
un 42.7 por ciento entre los sondeados de entre
20 y 24 años, mientras que en las mujeres de la
misma franja de edad tan sólo el 9.1 y el 14 por
ciento, respectivamente, solicitaba su uso.
“Las mujeres quieren agradar a sus parejas y en
muchas ocasiones no se atreven a enfrentarse”,
señaló la ministra de la Secretaría Especial de
Política para las Mujeres de Brasil, Nilcea Fiere.
El perfil de las afectadas por la enfermedad en
Latinoamérica y Caribe es el de mujeres jóvenes,
heterosexuales y pobres, ya que, según declaró
la representante especial para temas de la mujer
de la Cancillería argentina, Magdalena Faillace,
“existe una relación directa entre la feminización
de la pobreza y la feminización del sida”.
En la actualidad, las portadoras del virus se
encuentran discriminadas y tienen muchas
dificultades a la hora de encontrar trabajo,
aseguró a su vez Patricia Pérez, de la Secretaría
para América Latina y el Caribe de la Comunidad
Internacional de Mujeres con VIH/SIDA.
Pérez afirmó que en muchos países las
afectadas tienen acceso al tratamiento cuando
están embarazadas y una vez que dan a luz la
prioridad pasa al bebé, por lo que ellas sólo son
tomadas en cuenta como “recipiente”.
“Las mujeres que tienen sida no conocen sus
derechos, por lo que no pueden luchar por ellos”,
subrayó.

Dos tercios de los 1.7 millones de afectados por
VHI en América Latina viven en Argentina, Brasil,
Colombia y México; sin embargo, la prevalencia
estimada del virus es máxima en los países más
pequeños de América Central, con casi el 1 por
ciento en El Salvador, Guatemala y Panamá, el
1.5 por ciento en Honduras y el 2.5 en Belice,
según estadísticas del 2005.
La Coalición de Primeras Damas y Mujeres
líderes, que es presidida por la primera dama de
Honduras, Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, se formó
hace seis meses en Nueva York en el marco
de una reunión de las Naciones Unidas sobre
VHI/SIDA.
El objetivo principal de esta coalición es
posicionar el problema en el punto de mira de
las agendas regionales e internacionales para
desarrollar políticas públicas que pongan en
marcha acciones a largo plazo y que ahonden en
la lucha contra el machismo y la discriminación,
destacó Castro.
La coalición apuesta por el desarrollo de la
educación sexual, sobre todo entre la población
más joven, así como por un incremento del acceso
a los anti-retrovirales, las pruebas diagnósticas y
los programas de apoyo social a los afectados

* Aceite de oliva virgen - 230 cc.
* Ajos - 2 ó 3 dientes, según tamaño.
* Arroz - 350 grs.
* Azafrán
* Calamar - 150 grs.
* Caldo de pescado - aproximadamente, el
triple de caldo que de arroz.
* Cigala - 4 tan grandes o más que las gambas.
* Clochina - 8 unidades.
* Colorante alimentario - en caso de no tener
azafrán.
* Gamba - 8 unidades, a más gordas mejor.
* Pimentón - una cucharada o la pulpa de 4
ñoras.
* Sepia - 150 grs.
* Tomate - 4 cucharadas (rallado o triturado).

Recipes
Troceamos, la sepia y los calamares en cuadrados
de unos 2 cm. Ponemos el aceite a calentar y
cuando humee, salteamos las gambas y las cigalas
durante 1 minuto, las sacamos y las reservamos. A
continuación, incorporamos la sepia y los calamares
y los sofreímos hasta que empiecen a tomar un ligero
color dorado. En ese instante, añadimos el tomate
y dos ajos picados muy finos y lo sofreímos bien,
hasta que empiece a oscurecer. Entonces ponemos
el pimentón dulce o las ñoras, lo removemos todo
e incorporamos el arroz. A continuación, el caldo
hirviendo, medio ajo picado muy fino, y dejamos
cocer el conjunto a fuego vivo. A los 10 minutos de
cocción, colocamos con gracia las gambas y las
cigalas por encima del arroz y dejamos cocer otros 5
ó 6 minutos más a fuego suave, hasta que el caldo
se evapore por completo.
Hay quien al sofrito le añade dos cucharadas de
cebolla muy picadita.
Para el caldo lo ideal son espinas y cabeza de rape,
pescado de roca y pescado de playa, galeras y/o
cangrejos. Con 25 minutos de cocción es suficiente.
Al caldo se le puede añadir una cebolla y un tomate,
o una hoja de laurel.
A más sabroso sea el caldo, más rica será la paella.
Si vuestro presupuesto os lo permite, podéis poner
también unos trozos de langosta o bogavante e
incluso unas almejas, trozos de rape o pez espada.

Ingredientes
* 3 tazas de harina
* 1 kilo de yuca rallada
* 4 huevos
* 1 taza de natilla
* 1 taza de mantequilla
* 1/2 Kg. de queso rallado

Preparación
Se bate todo muy bien. Se enmantecan las
bandejas para horno y se van poniendo partes
de la pasta a las que les han dado forma
de bolitas. Se ponen en un horno caliente
dejándolas hasta que se doren.

Some times it’s
happens
It was two years and a half ago, just the
same day when my daughter had her last test
at the University I was thinking about going
back home when I received the call “ Your
Mom passed away right now “
She had a hundred years and seven month of
a good live with love from all of us, husband,
children, family and friends.
We used to have parties as Cuban people love
to have and she always was in the middle of
them, looking, laughing, and singing even
though she was so old.
I remember when I was a child how she
worked so hard, always kept busy and how I
never saw her rest at home or take a brake.
I didn’t have time to tell her, how much I
appreciated all of her teachings and I
thought that she never knew how much I
learned with her.
Some times mothers never hear their
children utter, “Thank you Mother”; perhaps
they suppose that their parents know they
are thankful.
It was so hard for me and I don’t not how I
resisted this shock in my heart.
Some time when people live longer than usual
you can not image that one day
they will depart. I was so sad because I
couldn’t cry not many people have the
opportunity of seeing his mother for such
a long time, so I must say: Thank you Good,
for giving me this gift .
Some times I feel my Mon so close to me, I
know that she looks at me and
smiles at me how she always did. I can feel
her scene, I see her face, I
can hear her voice because she is with
me. She never passed away. Mother’s love
continues with you for ever.
If go to the mountains, when I look to the
sky, she is up there smiling down at me .
When I hear the birds is like a song for both
of us. It is the moment to be in touch, no
matter were.
When we don our best apparels, we have the
tradition or wearing a red flower if our
mother is alive and a white one if she passed
away, but I don’t need a white flower because
she lives on.
I want to give to all the daughters or sons
who have lost their mother, the poem that I
read for my mother and I would advise that
Mothers Days is a Day to be happy because
Mothers are always with us.

Virginia’s governor, Tim
Kaine, has appointed
an independent panel to
investigate Monday’s gun
rampage at Virginia Tech
in which 33 people died.
The six-member team includes
former Homeland
Security chief Tom
Ridge.
The panel will study the
treatment of gunman Cho
Seung-hui in the period
preceding the shootings,
as well as events on the
day itself.
Officials have been
accused of ignoring signs
that Cho, who had been
identified as mentally ill,
was a danger.
Eight students injured in
the assault are still being
treated at Montgomery
Field Hospital, close to
the university campus.
Inquiry to probe Virginia killing
Seventeen people
were treated for injuries
after the shooting, with
four undergoing major
surgery.
Virginia Tech Provost
Mark McNamee has
announced that the
27 students that Cho
killed will all receive
posthumous degrees.
The first funeral ceremonies
for those killed
were held in Virginia
on Thursday. Egyptian
Waleed Mohammed
Shaalan and Indonesian
Partahi Lumbantoruan,
both doctoral civil
engineering students,
will also have funeral
ceremonies in their home
countries.
On Friday, family
members gathered in
Israel for the funeral of
mathematics professor
Liviu Librescu.
Two people were killed
at the West Ambler
Johnston Hall, a university
dormitory, at 0715 on
Monday.
Two hours later Cho
killed 30 students and
teachers, plus himself, at
the Norris Hall complex
across campus.
Though police have not
definitively linked Cho to
both sets of shootings,
they say the same
gun was used at both
locations.
Questions are being
asked about the response
to the first shootings
and whether putting the
campus on a full lockdown
earlier could have saved
lives.
Lesson to be
learnt
Mr Kaine said the
investigation would not
seek to lay blame, but
to ensure that such a
tragedy could not happen
again.
The panel, which will be
led by former Virginia
police chief Gerald
Massengill and include
security and education
officials and a psychiatrist,
will study what mental
health treatment Cho
received and if more
could have been done to
avert Monday’s violence.
It will seek to discover
“everything we know
about the young man
who was the perpetrator”,
Mr Kaine said.
“What were the warning
signs? Who was warned?
What was done?”
Police have already
revealed that Cho, who
moved to the US with his
family from South Korea
in 1992, was admitted to
a mental health unit in
late 2005.
He was sent for evaluation
after two female students
made complaints against
him, they said.
The complaints by
students against Cho
were made in November
and December 2005.
Around the same time,
Cho’s English teachers
raised concerns over
his writing and general
behaviour.
In the aftermath of the
shootings, teachers and
fellow students have
spoken of Cho’s extreme
moods, violent writings
and unpredictable
behaviour.
Video controversy
In the two-hour lull
between killings, Cho
sent a package to US
network NBC containing
28 video clips 1,800 words
of text and 43 photos,
11 of them showing Cho
aiming handguns at the
camera.
Police have criticised the
decision by NBC to air
the clips.
“We’re rather disappointed
in the editorial decision
to broadcast these
disturbing images,” police
superintendent Colonel
Steve Flaherty said.
Police said the videos -
showing an angry Cho
ranting and pointing guns
at the camera - added
little to their investigation.
NBC defended its decision
to use Cho’s videos,
saying in a statement:
“We have covered this
story - and our unique
role in it - with extreme
sensitivity, underscored
by our devoted efforts to
remember and honour
the victims and heroes of
this tragic incident.”
However, some relatives
of those killed cancelled
planned interviews with
NBC, angry over the
network’s decision.

vuelve a las canchas

El equipo de fútbol de la comunidad salvadoreña
en Red Deer, The Wright Upholstery, volverá a
jugar este año en el campeonato “Central Alberta
Mens Soccer League Outdoor 2007”, luego de
haber sido campeón de ese torneo el año pasado.
El director técnico del cuadro guanaco, el tapicero
David Villalta, dijo que se siente contento porque su
equipo va a volver a las canchas y aseguró que
también está optimista de que los zagueros
salvadoreños harán un buen papel en el
campeonato.
El año pasado, The Wright Upholstery, se alzó con
el trofeo de campeón del torneo, en el que
participaron ocho equipos diferentes, los que no
fueron testigos
del poder salvadoreño.
“Los primeros partidos del equipo este año serán a
mediados de mayo”, anunció Lucy de Villalta, la
principal seguidora del equipo.
Asimismo, el jugador Marvin Paiz dijo que la moral
de los más de 20 jugadores salvadoreños está alta,
y que todos ellos están listos para volver a ganar el
campeonato de fútbol y poner en alto, una vez más,
el nombre de El Salvador en estas tierras lejanas
del norte.

Flames claw back, it’s a series now
CALGARY -- It’s a series now.
Daymond Langkow scored twice, including the
winner in the second period, as the Calgary
Flames tied their playoff series against Detroit
with a 3-2 win over the Red Wings on Thursday
night.
Game 5 of the best-of-seven series will be
Saturday in Detroit, with Game 6 back in Calgary
on Sunday.
Is there a momentum swing?
“We can’t take anything for granted,” said
Langkow. “We have to play the same as we have
here at home right off the bat in Detroit. We’ve
had intensity and emotion. I don’t think we had
that in the first two games. We have to carry the
same effot and intensity into Detroit.”
Craig Conroy also scored for Calgary and captain
Jarome Iginla assisted on both of Langkow’s
goals before a sellout crowd of 19,289.
The Flames got some outstanding goaltending
from Miikka Kiprusoff, particularly in the third
period when the Wings pulled out all the stops
and played some serious river hockey.
“He’s our brick wall back there,” noted Flames
defenceman Andrei Zyuzin.
For the second straight game, Calgary’s special
teams and goaltending were better than Detroit’s.
The Flames scored two power-play goals on six
chances while holding Detroit scoreless on six
opportunities.
If penalty-killing starts with your goalie, then
Kiprusoff is the brick wall as the Flames denied
the Wings a goal in six man advantages. In the
two games at the ‘Dome the Wings have gone
0-10.
Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen replied for the
Wings, who won the first two games at home
before dropping the next two here.
The Flames have to find a way to win in Detroit to
pull off an upset of the top-seeded team in the
Western Conference.
“I still think we can play better,” said Flames
forward Alex Tanguay.”There is a lot to improve
on for Saturday because we know they are going
to come with their very best.
“But we feel like we are back in the series now
and that was what we wanted to do at home.”
Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff had to make
tougher saves than Detroit’s Dominik Hasek and
stopped 33 of 35 shots. Hasek turned away 18 of
21 shots.
