What would you tell a world
leader about Girl Guides?
El movimiento de las
Niñas Guías en Calgary se
inició en 1931 y desde
entonces su participación
en la comunidad ha sido
extensiva.
Las Niñas Guías del Area
de Calgary realizaron
recientemente un concurso
de ensayo, el tema fue
“¿Si conocieras a un líder
mundial, que le dirías acerca
de las Niñas Guías?”.
Cien de las participantes
que enviaron sus ensayos
fueron seleccionadas para
recibir a la Reina a su arrivo
al almuerzo del Round Up
Centre. Las niñas y 25 líderes
también recibieron a otros
dignatarios que llegaron al
almuerzo y hablaron con
muchos de ellos.
El siguiente ensayo enviado
por Victoria D.., fue
seleccionado ganador.
“Me gustan muchas cosas
acerca de las Niñas Guías.
Es divertido, emocionante
y algunas veces retador.
Cuando llegue aquí de
Maryland, EE.UU, yo no
tenía amigos. Una vez que
me integré a las Niñas
Guías, hice muchas nuevas
amistades, de mi escuela y de
otras escuelas. También me
gusta como todos se unen,
nadie se queda de fuera. Las
líderes son de lo mejor que te
puedas imaginar.
Los rangos (emblemas)
son retadores y divertidos.
Realmente me gusta como cada
rango es diferente de otro. Yo
tengo 18 geniales emblemas
en mi solapa. Acampar
siempre es sorprendente.
Siempre voy a acampar y es
muy divertido: marshmallows,
fogatas, tiendas, caminatas y
mucho más. Las Niñas Guías
es una grandiosa actividad
para niñas”.
El Lilac Festival en la Cuarta Calle con Fiebre de Salsa
Lilac Festival on 4th Street with Salsa Fever
El Lilac Festival en la Calle Cuatro no es sólo el Festival
al aire libre más grande de Calgary, pero también es una
exibición multicultrual que atrae a vendedores que ofertan
sus productos y manualidades de los cuatro rincones del
planeta. El entretenimiento también es Multicultural desde
temas del Oeste hasta el Tema del Baile del León Chino.
Lo que comenzó como un pequeño sueño en la Calle
Cuatro ahora atrae a más de 80,000 personas lo que
podría llamarse como la Milla de la Cuarta Calle, similar
al Calgary Flames Stanley Cup cuando a la 17 Avenida
se le apodó la Milla Roja. El Lilac Festival puede reclamar
para sí misma el título de “Lilac Festival de la Milla de la
Calle Cuatro” y dada la multitud que caminaba hombro
con hombro a lo largo de esta franja, significa eso, una
milla llena de diversión.
Hasta los más jóvenes se divirtieron pintándose la cara con
figuras de su elección como mariposas tatuadas en sus
brazos y disfrutando de todas las cosas sabrosas en las que
podían enterrar sus dientes.
El escenario del Festival
en la garita de entrada se
convirtió en una fiesta por
sí misma pues la multitud
que se agrupaba la tarde
del domingo se vio invadida
de una Fiebre Latina antes
de iniciar su camino a lo
largo de la Cuarta Calle. La
actuación en el escenario
del reconocido grupo
musical Latin Beat invitó
con sus acordes a los
fanáticos de la Salsa.
Una de las muchas casetas
con información valiosa era
la de Calgary Communities
Against Sexual Abuse
(CCASA). La agencia

The Girl Guide movement
in Calgary began in 1913,
and from the beginning,
their involvement with
the community has been
extensive.
The Calgary Area Girl
Guides had an essay contest
recently, the topic was “If
you could meet a world
leader, what would you tell
them about Girl Guides.”
One hundred girls who
submitted essays were
selected to greet the Queen
as she arrived for lunch at
the Round Up Centre. The
girls and 25 of their leaders
also greeted the other
dignitaries that arrived for
lunch, and spoke with many
of them.
The following essay
submitted by Victoria D., a
Guide was selected as the
winner.
“I like many things about Girl
Guides. It is fun, exciting,
and even challenging
sometimes. When I first
moved here from Maryland,
USA, I didn’t have very many
friends. Once I joined Girl
Guides, I made lots of new
friends, both from my school
and from different schools.
I also like how everybody is
together, nobody is left out.
The leaders are the best you
could ever imagine.
Badges are fun and
challenging. I really like
how each badge is unique
and exciting in it’s own
way. I have 18 awesomely
cool badges on my sash.
Camping is always really
amazing. I have always
gone to camp and it is so
much fun: marshmallows,
campfires, cabins or tents,
hikes and much more. Girl
Guides is a great activity for
girls.”

El CCASA estuvo muy
ocupado pintando
caras y brazos de
adultos y caras de
niños llenos de sus
sueños y queriendo
ser diferentes en el
Lilac Festival.
The Lilac Festival on 4th street is not only Calgary’s biggest
outdoor festival, but also a Multi-Cultural Exhibition
attracting vendors offering products and crafts from the 4
corners of the Planet. Entertainment is also focused on
Multi- Culturalism from Western Theme to
Chinese Lion Dancing.
What began as a small dream for 4th Street
and now attracting more than 80,000 can
be termed the 4th Street Mile, similar to
the Calgary Flames Stanley Cup Challenge
when 17th Ave was dubbed the Red Mile.
Lilac Festival can lay claim to itself as the
Lilac Festival 4th Street Mile and given
the shoulder to shoulder crowd along the
stretch means just that, one long fun filled
mile.
Even the youngsters had a fun filled day
getting faced painted to the character of
their choice of getting Butterfly symbols
tattooed on their arms as well as enjoying
all the goodies that one can get their teeth
into.
The Festival Stage at the entrance gate
of the Festival was a party in itself as the
Sunday afternoon crowd
got caught up in Latin Fever
before heading down the
length of 4th Street. The
stage performance by well
known local Band Latin Beat
strung thru the entrance
area attracting Salsa Fans.
One of the many valuable
information booths was
hosted by the Calgary
Communities Against
Sexual Abuse (CCASA).
The agency provides
information and awareness
of where those in need
can seek help or extended
information in a issue that
often is overlooked. The
information booth was
informative and for those
needing information click

busy dotting faces and
arms of adults and children
getting the face painting of
their dreams and dare to be
different at Lilac Festival.
