Martha Cháves y el negocio serio de la “Risa”
Martha Cháves and the serious business of “Laugh”
Habla 4 idiomas (5 si está intoxicada o
rezando). Martha Cháves, Nicaragüense actúa
muy normal bajo las luces, y rápidamente
dice un chiste: “Yo revelo muchas cosas, soy
una refugiada política y cada vez que estoy
bajo la luz tengo urgencia por confesar”.
Su contagioso estilo la ha llevado del círculo
de clubes de comedia a la luz del Montreal
Show, al Festival de Comedia de 1994 “Just
For Laughs”. Desde entonces ha aparecido 3
veces más en JFL. En 1996 en la apertura del
concierto de Tito Puente en el Club Metrópolis
en Montreal, después en “Caroline’s” en New
York y “La Fábrica de la Risa” en los Angeles.
El mismo año estuvo muy emocionada de
iniciar el Show de Gloria Estefan en Toronto,
en el 2004 compartió el escenario de Lula
Lounge con su coterráneo cantautor Luis
Enrique Mejía Godoy, y la Gala de “Festival
de la Comedia de Toronto”.
Este año, el 29 de Abril, actuó en la Gala de
la Risa en el Auditorio Rebecca Cohn, el 27
en Nova Scotia en el Casino de la Comedia y
el 25 de Abril en el DNTH.
Actualmente ella es la estrella del Yuk Yuks
Comedy Club de Toronto, donde se presenta
lo mejor de los comediantes canadienses.
Ser comediante es un negocio muy serio,
dice Martha, pero “desde que era una niña en
Nicaragua me gustaba hacer reir a la gente.
Yo creo que uno nace con ello”. El humor
de los nicaragüenses es natural, tendemos
a reirnos de casi todo, nuestros problemas,
política, educación, la guerra, la paz, bueno
usted diga.
Durante los últimos
8 años, ha actuado
en Colegios y
Universidades de
Canadá, República
Dominicana. En
Hollywood actuó con
Denzel Washinton en
la película John Q.
Un año más tarde
apareció en Down to
Earth con Chris Rock
para la CBS y en el
Festival del Film de
Toronto, 2003 en el
cortometraje Perfect.
Una muestra de sus
chistes es este:”Estaba leyendo que el éxtasis
puede provocar un clímax sexual por ocho
horas. ¡Ocho horas! ¡No sabía que el orgasmo
se pudiera fingir tanto tiempo!
Fluent in 4 languages (5 if intoxicated or
praying), Nicaraguan-born Martha Chaves
performs quite naturally alone under a bright
light, and she is quick to tell a joke: “I reveal
many things, I am a political refugee and
every time I under the light I have the urge to
confess”.
Her contagious style
led her from the
comedy club circuit
to the spotlight of the
“Montreal Show” at
the “Just For Laughs”
Comedy Festival in
1994. She has since
appeared 3 more
times in JFL. In 1996
as the opening for the
Tito Puente concert
in Club Metropolis
in Montreal, then at
“Caroline’s” in New
York City and “The
Laugh Factory” in
Los Angeles. The same year she was thrilled to
start the Gloria Estefan Show in Toronto, in
2004 she shared the Lula Lounge stage with
also Nicaraguan song singer/song writer Luis
Enrique Mejía Godoy, and at the Gala of the
“Toronto Comedy Festival”.
Recently on April 29 she performed during the
Gala Laughs, at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium,
on April 27 in Nova Scotia at the Comedy
Casino and on April 25 at the DNTH (Definitely
not this hour).
She is currently a favorite performer at the Yuk
Yuks Comedy Club of Toronto, where the best
Canadian comedians perform.
Being a comedian is a very serious business,
Martha said, but “Ever since I was a little
girl back in Nicaragua I always like to make
people laugh. I think one is born with it. The
Nicaraguan humour is natural, we tend to
laughs out of almost anything, our problems,
politic, education, war, peace, you name it.
During the last 8 years she has performed in
Canada, Dominican Republic, Colleges, and
Universities. In Hollywood she acted with
Denzel Washington in the movie John Q. A
year later she was called to appear on Down to
Earth with Chris Rock for CBS and at the 2003
Toronto Film Festival in the shortfilm Perfect. A
sample of her jokes is this one: “I was reading
that ecstasy can provoque a sexual climax for
8 hours. 8 hours! I didn’t know that an orgasm
could be faked that long!
