As a result of the continued high water throughout the waterways in The City of Calgary, the Fire Department would like to re-enforce the following extremely important water safety messages. Waters are starting to recede, however, they are still high and pose significant dangers. Banks along both the Elbow and Bow Rivers are very dangerous due to erosion and can collapse without warning. It’s imperative that the public stay well back from the banks until the water levels recede back to normal levels. This message is also for the banks of wet & dry ponds throughout the city. Banks along the ponds are wet and slippery, and some ponds can have in excess of one meter of cold dirty water in them. The officials are also requesting the public stay away from the Glenmore Dam spillway area for safety reasons. The waters in Fish Creek have also risen dramatically in the last two days and officials from the Provincial Park are advising that all pedestrian bridges in the park are closed and banks along the creek are extremely dangerous. There are multiple areas of bank along the creek that have collapsed. Compliance with these safety messages is extremely important in the protection of the public as well as the rescue personnel that have to attend these emergency incidents. Abril, June, 2005 CanadianLatino Newspaper English and Spanish 11 Fallece a los 78 años Hamilton Naki, cirujano autodidacta símbolo del ‘apartheid’ Hamilton Naki, Self-taught surgeon, symbol of ‘apartheid’ dies at 78 En diciembre de 1967, el Dr. Christian Barnard anunció al mundo que el primer transplante de corazón entre humanos se había realizado con éxito en el hospital Groote Schuur, de Ciudad del Cabo. Nadie supo entonces que el peso de la operación lo había llevado un hombre de raza negra, Hamilton Naki. “Si hubieran publicado mi fotografía habría ido a la cárcel. Así eran las cosas en aquel entonces”, recordaba Naki. Naki falleció el pasado 29 de mayo a la edad de 78 años. Durante casi cuarenta años, fue un auxiliar del hospital. Hamilton Naki nunca terminó la escuela primaria. Entró en la institución como jardinero, aunque pronto se dedicó a limpiar las jaulas de los animales con los que el prestigioso cirujano Barnard experimentaba en el campo de los transplantes. Poco a poco, las habilidades de Naki llevaron a los médicos a pedirle que manejara a los animales durante las operaciones, luego que se hiciera cargo de la anestesia y finalmente, que los operara. A partir de la observación, se convirtió en un experto cirujano de manos precisas y firmes, sólo conocido para los que compartían el quirófano con él. Ante la ley, era el jardinero. La noche del 3 de diciembre de 1967 fue Naki quien extrajo el corazón de una mujer blanca, atropellada por un coche, para que fuera trasplantado a otra mujer blanca, la primera persona que recibió un corazón ajeno. Fue en el 2001 que el Dr. Barnard antes de morir y una década después del fin del apartheid, contara la historia verdadera. “Técnicamente, él es mejor que yo”, afirmó Barnard. En el 2002, se le otorgó a Naki uno de los reconocimientos más altos, el ‘National Order of Mapungubwe’ y además de un graduado honorífico en medicina por la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo. Naki trabajó hasta 1991 se jubiló con una pensión de 226 euros al mes. La que le correspondía como jardinero. “Ahora que todo se sabe puedo ser feliz, La luz se ha encendido y la oscuridad se ha ido” dijo entonces Naki. No one knew back then that all the surgery responsiblity was in a black man’s hand’s, Hamilton Naki. “If they had published my picture, I would have gone to jail”. That’s how things were back then”. Naki remembered. He died on May 29 at 78. For forty years he was a hospital assistant. Hamilton Naki never finished elementry school. He landed in the institution as a gardener, although soon enough he started to clean the animals cages, the ones with what the prestigious surgeon, Dr. Barnard experimented in the field of trasplants. Little by little the skills of Naki were noticed by the doctors and they started to ask Naki to handle the animals during surgery, then they put him charge of the anaesthesia and finally to perform surgery himself. From just observation, he became an experienced surgeon of precise and steady hands, only known for those who shared the operating room with him. Before the law he was only a gardener. The night of Decembre 3, 1967 was Naki who removed the heart of a white woman chest to be trasplanted onto another white woman, the first person ever to receive a stranger‘s heart. It was in 2001 that Dr. Barnard, before his dead and a decade after the end of apartheid, that he told the real story. In 2002 Naki was presented with one of the maximum presidential awards, the “National Order of Mapungubwe’, also the Honourary degree in Medicine from the University of Cape Town. Naki worked until 1991, he retired on a 226 euros a month, pension he was entitled as a gardener. “I can be happy now that everything is out. The light is lit and the darkness has gone,” he said. Han habido más protestas que días en la presidencia, esto de acuerdo a sus propios cálculos. Para observadores veteranos de la política de Bolivia, no hay nada particularmente nuevo acerca de las protestas callejeras regulares, caminos bloqueados y marchas. Muchos factores, algunos de corto plazo, algunos de muy viejas raíces se han combinado para hacer que el presidente Mesa se mantuviera en el poder mucho tiempo. The mainly left-wing and indigenous protesters are demanding the nationalisation of the industry and constitutional reforms to give greater rights to the country’s impoverished highlanders. One of my tasks will be to begin an electoral process, Mr Rodriguez is Bolivia’s third president in less than two years. His inauguration and the prospect of an election was hailed by protesters, who have been holding daily demonstrations and blockades since last month. “Bolivia deserves better days,” Mr Rodriguez told deputies. “I am convinced that one of my tasks will be to begin an electoral process to renew and continue building a democratic system that is more just.” Under the constitution, an election must be held be held by the end of the year.
