Church rivalry <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Artemije supporters<br />
Coordinator’s office for <strong>the</strong> Strategy of North<br />
Various Serb-Serb c<strong>on</strong>flicts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> rivalries in <strong>north</strong> extend also in <strong>the</strong> religious field.<br />
The<br />
divisi<strong>on</strong> that happened in <strong>the</strong> Raska-Prizren bishopric, increasing into <strong>an</strong> <strong>open</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />
involved <strong>north</strong> in particular. Divisi<strong>on</strong> between <strong>the</strong> two lines in this bishopric, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />
in general<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g>in <strong>the</strong> Serb Orthodox Church, involved well-known stakeholders from different interest<br />
groups<br />
from <strong>north</strong>. The decisi<strong>on</strong> to replace bishop Artemije who was holding <strong>the</strong> positi<strong>on</strong> for<br />
m<strong>an</strong>y<br />
years brought a politically radical wing from <strong>north</strong> in his protecti<strong>on</strong>, supported by<br />
Marko Jaksic,<br />
Mil<strong>an</strong> Iv<strong>an</strong>ovic <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r exp<strong>on</strong>ents from DSS. But, here were also involved<br />
different<br />
groups of ultra-right youth <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> sport hoolig<strong>an</strong> groups, as was elaborated previously<br />
in this report. Thus, org<strong>an</strong>ized groups by Igor Vojinovic <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> “Narodni Pokret Otadjbina”<br />
were involved also in <strong>the</strong> well-known c<strong>on</strong>flict in fr<strong>on</strong>t of Grac<strong>an</strong>ica m<strong>on</strong>astery<br />
during<br />
February 2011, where two church groups were involved in a physical fight in fr<strong>on</strong>t of<br />
cameras. In fact, Vojinovic was seen armed in <strong>the</strong> Duboki Potok m<strong>on</strong>astery in November<br />
2010 when toge<strong>the</strong>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> Artemije followers took c<strong>on</strong>trol over this m<strong>on</strong>astery. Following this<br />
event, Vojinovic was pursued by Kosovo Police, but quite str<strong>an</strong>gely<br />
he m<strong>an</strong>aged to escape<br />
through <strong>the</strong><br />
window of his apartment in Mitrovica during <strong>the</strong> police operati<strong>on</strong>. Different<br />
groups<br />
like “Obraz”, “Naci<strong>on</strong>alni<br />
Stroj”,<br />
“1389” <strong>open</strong>ly took sides supporting <strong>the</strong> Artemije group. This support was politically<br />
backed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Marko Jaksic group <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> “Civil Support”. This made <strong>north</strong> not <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>an</strong> active<br />
factor<br />
in this divisi<strong>on</strong>, but also became its own epilogue.<br />
Thus,<br />
church group around Artemije, supported by this political wing is located in <strong>north</strong> of<br />
Kosovo,<br />
<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> took over in <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>ti-c<strong>an</strong><strong>on</strong>ical m<strong>an</strong>ner c<strong>on</strong>trol over some m<strong>on</strong>asteries, like<br />
Duboki<br />
Potok <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> different churches in municipality of Zubin Potok, Zvec<strong>an</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Leposavic.<br />
This<br />
was <strong>an</strong> <strong>open</strong> attempt to c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>t <strong>the</strong> central authority of Serb Orthodox Church, clearly<br />
supported<br />
by <strong>the</strong> pro Tadic political wing. In fact, this marked <strong>the</strong> most serious attempt for a<br />
kind<br />
of schism <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g>in KOS.60 Such <strong>an</strong> activity happened <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>an</strong> <strong>open</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> pro DSS<br />
wing<br />
<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> various radical <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> ultra-right groupings. In fact, Artemije <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his wing that<br />
previously<br />
had support from groups suspected of serious misuses <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g>in <strong>the</strong> Church,<br />
including<br />
huge fin<strong>an</strong>cial me<strong>an</strong>s, such as <strong>the</strong> case <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>k Sime<strong>on</strong> Vilsovki, secretary of<br />
<strong>the</strong><br />
Raska-Prizren bishopric, who a while ago emigrated to Greece when he received <strong>the</strong><br />
warr<strong>an</strong>t<br />
to arrest from Serb investigati<strong>on</strong> authorities.61 Bishop Artemije started <strong>an</strong> activity in<br />
<strong>north</strong><br />
that implicated wide support <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> logistic establishment in different parts in <strong>north</strong>, like<br />
<strong>the</strong><br />
house of Rajko Miletic in Zitkovc who currently lives in Ar<strong>an</strong>gelovc in Serbia <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> who is<br />
suspected for attack against KFOR. It is believed that such base-houses exist also in Zupc of<br />
Zubin Potok, Lesak, Leposavic, etc. Unc<strong>on</strong>firmed<br />
informati<strong>on</strong> linked <strong>the</strong> support of Artemije<br />
in <strong>north</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russi<strong>an</strong> ultra-right groups. In <strong>the</strong> end, Aretemije’s putsch attempt was driven<br />
back from direct Kosovo Police interventi<strong>on</strong>, which<br />
in a combined acti<strong>on</strong>, starting from <strong>the</strong><br />
request of legitimate Church authorities <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Raska-Prizren bishopric acting in Kosovo, but<br />
also <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> a support of authorities<br />
in Belgrade <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r kosovar <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> internati<strong>on</strong>al authorities<br />
m<strong>an</strong>aged to avoid <strong>the</strong> putsch group of church<br />
fracti<strong>on</strong>, which left Kosovo physically,<br />
although it seems that a group of <strong>the</strong>ir supporters remained still.<br />
