The University at Buffalo women’s volleyball team begins a new
chapter in its program’s history this year as the Bulls welcome firstyear
head coach Todd Kress. Kress, who has 14 years of Division I head
coaching experience, has taken three different programs to the NCAA
Tournament in his career.
“I am thrilled to be here coaching at Buffalo and back in the Mid-
American Conference,” said Kress. “We are working hard and preparing
our team for what should be an exciting season of volleyball.”
The Bulls return most of their team from a season ago, including
junior middle blocker Kristin Bignell, who led the Bulls in numerous
categories last season. Bignell hit .307 on the year, the highest for any
UB player in its Mid-American Conference era. Bignell also had several
benchmark matches led by a .882 hitting mark against Butler. She was
twice named MAC East Player of the Week and was named to the alltournament
team in all four of UB’s non-conference tournaments. Bignell
also led the team in kills and blocks.
While Bignell was a force in the middle, the Bulls were missing the
services of Kelsey Lueders, who was forced to redshirt the year after a
season-ending foot injury in the third match of the year. Lueders had
22 kills in two and a half matches before the injury.
Getting the ball into the middle will be the job of junior setter Lindsey
Schlegel. Schlegel is beginning her third year running the UB offense
and she will look to not only get the middles involved, but also
work with Buffalo’s outside hitters. Schlegel is a threat for a triple-double
on any night as she covers a lot of ground digging balls and also has
a keen ability to know when to take it herself for a kill. The Lancaster, NY
native also led the Bulls in service aces last season with 32.
Schlegel will also be getting her outside hitter involved as the Bulls
return four outside hitters from last season. Junior Marisa Hornbaker
finished second on the team last season in kills with 172 and also finished
second on the team in service aces with 26. Hornbaker was recognized
early in the season when she was named to the all-tournament
team of the Air Force Invitational, which was in the Colorado Spring, CO
2009 Buffalo VolleyBall
A New Era Of UB Volleyball Begins In 2009
Head coach Todd Kress brings over 250 victories to Buffalo
Bignell
Kress
natives’ backyard. Hornbaker was also selected to the Academic All-
MAC Team.
Also returning is senior Maria Mezzadri who finished fourth on the
team with 159 kills last season. After not playing her freshman season,
Mezzadri has made an impact for UB in each of the last two years as one
of the hardest hitters on the team.
Senior Dani Silvers moves back to the outside hitter position after
seeing some action in the middle last year. Silvers missed half the season
due to injury last year, but when she was active she showed some
excellent athleticism on the court. Her 2.21 kills per set were second on
the team only behind Bignell.
“We have a lot of experience out on the court in all three of these
positions,” said Kress. “These players know the conference very well and
we look to their experience to help some of our younger players.”
Returning for the Bulls in the back row are four players that have
seen a lot of action in their careers. Senior Lauren Fensten, who served
as the libero last season, led the Bulls with 330 digs a year ago. She also
finished second on the team with 90 assists and added 13 service aces.
It was Fensten’s first year as libero at the collegiate level as she replaced
one of the top liberos in school history in Lizaiha Garcia.
Senior Ellen Robertson also returns for the Bulls and saw action in
28 matches for UB last season. She had 63 digs on the season and six
service aces. Junior Jenna Gabello saw limited action in 2008, but she
provides some depth.
One of the biggest bright spots in 2008 was the play of Heather
Pyle, who returns for her sophomore season. Pyle saw action in 28
matches, including a few at libero while Fensten was injured. Pyle had
128 digs and four service aces, as well as her first career kill.
“We also have a lot of depth in our back row and they worked extremely
hard this past spring to make better passes,” said Kress. “I am
happy with the way that they are progressing.”
Kress is also welcoming three newcomers for the upcoming sea-
son, including two transfers. Sophomore Abby Niekamp joins the Bulls
from Florida State where she was originally recruited by Kress when he
was with the Seminoles. Niekamp is a 6-1 middle blocker from Celina,
OH and she will figure in to the rotation in the middle.
True freshman to join the team is Tori Beckman, who hails from
Kansas City, MO. Beckman is a 5-8 defensive specialist, who brings a lot
of athleticism to the floor.
“I am please with the addition of Abby and Tori to our team,” said
Kress. “They all bring something different to the table and I think they
will learn a lot from our veterans on the team. I also expect them all to
come in and compete for playing time right away.”
Kress also brings in two new assistant coaches for the upcoming
season. Jenni Horvath joins the Bulls from Toledo, where she coached
the Rockets last season. Horvath is a 2008 graduate from Xavier where
she was a four-year letterwinner for the Musketeers. Horvath is UB’s
recruiting coordinator.
Also on the coaching staff is Andreza Santos, who joins the staff
from Florida A&M, where she coached the Rattlers to two NCAA Tournament
appearances. Santos played for Kress at Florida State she led the
Seminoles in hitting percentage at .278 and her 356 kills were also tops
on the team. She also added 127 digs and 66 total blocks for Florida
State.
“I am extremely happy to have Jenni and Andreza on staff with me,”
said Kress. “They both bring extensive knowledge of the game of volleyball
and I believe that our players will learn a lot from them.”
The Bulls have also put together a strong non-conference schedule,
which will prepare the team for Mid-American Conference play, which
starts in late September.
UB opens its season with a home tournament, hosting the University
at Buffalo Invitational. UB opens up on Aug. 28 with Boston College
and then hosts Fordham and Seton Hall on Aug. 29.
The opening weekend will prepare UB for its greatest challenge in
its Division I history as the Bulls travel to Penn State to take on the twotime
defending National Champions in the Nittany Lion Invitational. UB
will face Penn State on Sep. 4 and then face Pittsburgh and Robert Morris
on Sep. 5.
2009 Buffalo VolleyBall
Schlegel
Lueders
The Bulls will then have a four-match homestand, including a twomatch
set with Youngstown State, before heading to the Cornell Tourney,
for an all0New York battle. UB will face St. John’s, Colgate and Cornell
at the tournament. The Bulls will have one more non-conference
match later in October at Canisius, but following the Cornell Tournament,
UB will begin Mid-American Conference play.
Buffalo’s Mid-American Conference schedule will begin on the
weekend of Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26 when
the Bulls travel to Miami (OH) and Bowling Green, respectively. The
16-match conference slate will see the Bulls play each member of the
East Division (Akron, Bowling Green, Kent State, Miami and Ohio) twice,
both home and away, and each member of the West Division once (on
the road against Ball State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan and
at home against Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan). The
Bulls end the regular season at home, hosting Toledo on Sat., Nov. 14.
For the seventh season, every MAC school will qualify for the Mid-
American Conference Tournament, and first-round matches will take
place on Tuesday, November 17 on the campus sites of the higher
seeds. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final match will be on Friday,
November 22, Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24 in Toledo,
OH.
“I think we put together a good schedule that will prepare us physically
and mentally for the Mid-American Conference,” said Kress. “I am
looking forward to hosting the tournament the opening weekend and
show our fans what Buffalo volleyball is all about.”
For Kress and the 2009 Bulls this season is about unveiling a new
era of Buffalo Volleyball. One that is just beginning to evolve.
Todd Kress begins his first season as head coach of the UB
Volleyball team. Kress has won more than 250 matches as a head
coach and has led three teams to the NCAA Tournament, while
coaching a trio of All-Americans.
Kress has a career record of 255-159 in 14 years as a head coach at
the Division I level. He became the second youngest head coach
in NCAA volleyball history to win 200 matches, which he did so
in October 2004. He served as head coach at Florida State from
2002-2007 where he took the Seminoles to the NCAA Tournament
in his very first season in 2002. He coached NCAA All-Americans
in three seasons and first-team All-ACC players in five straight
years, while also mentoring the ACC’s Freshman of the Year in
2003. In the classroom, he had seven players named to the ACC
Academic Honor Roll and the first player at Florida State since
1993 to be named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District Team in 2007.
Prior to moving to Florida State, Kress served as head coach at
fellow MAC member, Northern Illinois from 1999-02. His 2001
team won the Mid-American Conference and represented the
league at the NCAA Tournament. He had the MAC Player of the
Year and MAC Freshman of the Year during that 2001 season.
Kress began his head coaching career at Fairfield University where
he led the team to MAAC Championships in 1997 and 1998,
