= 5 (in gamelan circles) = Javanese l/barang/bem<br />

a) one of the three tunings in tembang Sunda,<br />

approximating <strong>to</strong> Western F E C Bt A. Also often used in<br />

other kinds of music with kacapi.<br />

b) a scale used by the singer and rebab player during<br />

gamelan salendro which has intervals similar <strong>to</strong> those of<br />

(a). Three notes coincide with salendro, while the other<br />

two are in the cracks.<br />

A short bamboo flute with 4 holes, used in gamelan<br />

degung.<br />

A long bamboo flute with 6 holes, used in tembang Sunda.<br />

A tuning. Thus tembang Sunda uses surupan pelog, surupan<br />

sorog and surupan salendro.<br />

A bonang techique in which the hands play alternately.<br />

The right hand repeats the destination note on the offbeats,<br />

In gamelan salendro, a saron technique in which saron I<br />

plays melodically, while saron II plays the destination<br />

notes in rapid off-beats. May be played at the beginning<br />

of the piece before caruk begins.<br />

The opposite of kendor.<br />

Comparable <strong>to</strong> Javanese irama. Refers <strong>to</strong> the level of<br />

rhythmic expansion of a goong cycle. In 1 wilet the<br />

goong come close <strong>to</strong>gether. In 2 wilet they are twice as<br />

far apart. In 4 wilet they are twice as far apart again.<br />
