HUMAN SERVICES
United States
n Preble Street Soup Kitchen, Maine: RBC employees
prepared, served and cleaned up for a dinner service
at the Soup Kitchen. Each day, more than 900 meals
are served across the eight Preble Street Soup Kitchen
locations.
n Good Shepherd Services, New York: RBC partnered with
Good Shepherd Services (GSS) to support a range of
individual, family and school-based services to prevent
youth from becoming disconnected from family, school
and society. GSS is a leading youth development,
education and family services agency that serves more
than 200,000 participants a year, focusing on high-need
communities in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
n Kids Company, United Kingdom: Kids Company works
with children and youth to improve their skills and
confidence. In 2012, RBC ran four cookery workshops for
youth from inner-city boroughs, introducing new foods
to many of the children. Employees also redecorated
two inner-city schools and held a hamper collection at
the end of the year, bringing in 18 boxes of food for Kids
Christmas hampers, raising £800 in cash.
“As a volunteer firefighter with Pelham Manor
Volunteer Fire Company, I have responded to many
house fires, car fires and even a gas station fire over
the past 15 years. I think all citizens should be active
in their communities in some way. There’s no better
feeling than being able to help your neighbours. I
respond with great pride when the fire alarm sounds.”
n Dress for Success, United Kingdom: RBC supports a
number of women’s initiatives through the RWomen
group, including Dress for Success, a London-based
charity that aims to give women a step up in their careers
by building confidence, developing job application
skills and providing them with suitable clothing for job
interviews. Employees participated in a suit drive that
collected a van full of high-quality donated clothes,
raising £300 for the charity.
Caribbean
n Dyslexia Association: RBC donated $9,000 to support a
teachers’ training program for 20 teachers to learn how
to better teach students with learning disabilities.
Support for civic causes
We recognize that certain organizations simply make our
communities more livable. In 2012 we donated more than
$3 million to support organizations that are the building
blocks of strong communities, such as recreation centres,
programs that offer support for newcomers and community
economic development.
“I serve with Tri-County Ground Search and Rescue
based in Moncton, New Brunswick, in Atlantic
Canada. We are all volunteers and respond to
requests from police to search for lost or missing
persons. I believe our motto says it all ... ‘That
others may live.’”
